If you should ever be forced by a robber to withdraw money from an ATM
machine, you can notify the police by entering your Pin # in reverse.

For example if your pin number is 1234 then you would put in 4321. The
ATM
recognizes that your pin number is backwards from the ATM card you
placed
in the machine.

The machine will still give you the money you requested, but unknown to
the
robber, the police will be immediately dispatched to help you.

This information was recently broadcasted on TV and it states that it
is
seldom used because people don't know it exists.
Please pass this along to everyone possible.

Sounds like pish to me, any truth in it?

Re: Email regarding PIN numbers

Duress PINs are well used at a certain organization I used to work for (you swiped your card at the door and entered your pin + 1 if someone had a gun to your back ) ... but not for bank ATMs in the UK.

Edit +ATM +"duress pin" - Google Search looks like the idea has been thought about in the 'States though.

Re: Email regarding PIN numbers

You really need to ask?

If so then there's a dead nigerian that left all his money to you.

Just give me the £10000 fee to be able to collect it.

Whats funny is that people may believe the police would actually bother/be able to turn up everytime someone did that.

What about if your PIN is 4554? The police are going to accuse you of crying wolf sooner or later...

Re: Email regarding PIN numbers

Yet another junk email doing the rounds then!
I get loads of financial, viagra and various other emails sent to one of my old accounts (sometimes 100 per day ), the most frequent is the barclays which is funny as I've never dealt with them .
The only time I got scared and had to ring an ex MI5 computer expert mate of mine for some advice was when one of the barclays ones asked me to confirm my name and address which were filled in correctly on the email - I definately shat bricks for a few mins (And I'm pretty clued up on pc's too ) until we worked out that as I had used that address for subscribing to some, ahem, slightly questionable sites in the past (not recently, really!) that the bar stewards had either harvested my info or sold it on.
I ignored it and thankfully I've had no more with the "personal touch" have appeared since.

Basic rule of thumb is if it turns up by email and warns of some dire consequence of not acting or pass it on to everyone then its a big pile of the steamy smelly stuff .

Also I did try some email tracker software a while back to trace the junk spammers and it went all over the world only to stop at a US military server , there's some very clever people out there with too much time on their hands...................
