Found out my Grandad needs a operation (UPDATE)

Found out from my dad last night that my grandad needs a operation, we're not so sure what it is as my grandad does not want to worry us but going by what my dad was saying last night it is something neurological. That will explain all the visits to the hospital in the last week.Hope its not something serious, going to give him a call tonight and find out more.

Re: Found out my Grandad needs a operation

Probably won't be as bad as it sounds mate... once you find out whats going on properly you'll feel a lot better.

If the hospital and staff are anything as nice as they are in the hospital im sat in at the mo then he'll be in safe hands!

Best wishes to him Davy.

If he's still Rockin and Rollin at 81, he'll take it in his stride i'm sure.

And if it were something serious, i'm sure he'd tell you.

Re: Found out my Grandad needs a operation

Cheers guys,

well my dad and auntie today have been trying to get out of him what type of operation it is but to no such luck, and my mum is trying to get my dad along to the hospital with him so he does not go alone.

I hope everything goes well for him.

I've been in a similar situation too; my grandad had to go into hospital a couple of years ago, we all worried about him but it didn't bother him in the slightest. I'm sure it'll all be OK. Fingers crossed for him.

Kay.

Re: Found out my Grandad needs a operation

Hi. Do you know if your grandad will actually have the operation, as well as knowing that he seemingly needs one? They normally do pre-op checks and tests, so if he's passed those the surgeon and anaesthetist must be pretty confident of success or they wouldn't go ahead with it. Assuming they are going ahead, I hope he doesn't have to wait too long with it preying on his mind. Try to be positive so that your concern doesn't show too much

We'll all be rooting for him

Mo

He had some sort of tests in the last couple of weeks so not sure if that was anything to do with the operation.

Re: Found out my Grandad needs a operation

Hi all,

Just a wee update and a confusing one.

Was up at my grandads yesterday and he was asking me to write on bits of paper his next of kin and all the medication he is on when I asked him what it is for.

My Grandad goes "I don't know, my GP does not know (He called them to find out but they don't have any idea!!), so I'm going to say to them on Thursday that I'm confused to see why I have to go"

I seen the letter the hospital sent and it tells you nothing on it apart from a general anasethic he will undergo.

I think my dad is going with him on Thursday to hear what is being said and what it is for to put his mind at rest and so that he can tell us so we are not worrying about it.

Re: Found out my Grandad needs a operation

Hi. I read your post and rather hoped someone in the know with the NHS would reply and I'm sure someone will once they see it

What follows is just my thoughts and what I know from my own experience.

I can understand your discomfort with not having enough information to feel comfortable with what's happening at the moment. It would seem that your Grandad has been assessed as needing an operation and I'm speculating that they are still looking at this.

Again, all in my experience: It's quite usual to make sure that "next of kin" details are up to date before any sort of surgery is planned. I think that is a legal requirement re any decisions that could only be made by that person, but it's quite usual to offer another person as "someone to contact".

Re medications, if your Grandad is not sure, that would be better referred back to his GP to say what he's been prescribed (rather than you checking whatever bottles are in his cupboard which might have been superseded). The hospital would probably know that already. That is different from asking your Grandad directly which pills he is actually taking. Some medications need to be stopped a while before an operation whilst some have to continue to be taken - it depends what they are and what they are for.

If an operation is on the cards under general anaesthetic, they will make lots of checks beforehand and just won't do it if they're not happy with the results.

Your Grandad's GP really will know what's happening or at least the state of progress (as hospitals automatically keep GP informed) and why such letters have been sent to your Grandad, though it could be difficult for you to get much out of them if you are not "next of kin", and, even if you were, his GP or the hospital would only divulge so much because of patient confidentiality. Generally though, if you ask questions of them, they will tell you as much as they're allowed to. I find that it can help to ask, "If you can't answer that question, what can you tell me?" *sounding clearly concerned as being concerned*

In your shoes, I'd just ask some questions of people who could give me answers. It's hard for lots of reasons if you don't live close by, so just have to be thankful that Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone...

Best
Mo

Re: Found out my Grandad needs a operation

Hi all, a wee update to my grandad.

His operation is for lesions on the bladder and he goes for a explortry op a week on Monday, before they decide if another operation is in order.

Puts my mind at rest.

Ah: not a neurological operation then, but an urological Piece of cake (I hope), since your Grandad seems to be a tough guy he'll be back home in a tick.

SwedishSkoda- Many thanks, I don't think it bothers him about going to the operation but he is just annoyed he can't play his bowls when he goes in, he missed his game yesterday.

The western is a good bunch of guys!

My only fear is that I don't want to lose my grandad to this type of cancer as this is what my gran died of seven years ago! I'vfe grown really close to my grandad since then.

Try not to worry easier said than done I know.

Don't know if I have ever told you about my Gran who had cancer. She got cancer back in 1994 or so. But she pulled through and lived another good 5 years. She was a remarkable lady. I tell you the last 5 years of her life she lived her life to the full.

I am here for you.
