FWIW Weight Loss May be of use to someone as weak-willed as myself

Hope this may be of use to someone who suffers from being overweight and seemingly cannot lose the xtra pounds.
OK - embarrassing, but as the years pile on so, too, does the weight if you're not very strong willed

Recently I had a good ticking off from the Doctor - re cholesterol levels, Body Mass Index, and blood pressure levels - I smoke, am over 50, am male (doesn't help with cholesterol and BMI etc apparently), am pretty sedentary.
So have embarked on diet changes (am going to get around to quitting smoking soon- ish, I know I know).

One thing in particular has particularly bugged me these last 5-10 years and that is my weight (I'm probably some 3 to 4 stones over 'ideal weight').

I get so peed off with exercise for exercise sake (and before peeps jump in I used to be fitter and stronger than the proverbial, have probably lifted / carried more than most people will in 2 lifetimes + have been through all the rowing machine etc) and the suggestion that I go for walks or get a bike does nothing for me - I get bored too easily.

With all this in mind I did quite a bit of research into how to lose weight. As you may be aware there are literally hundreds / thousands of options. Only one appealed to me - one that would not mess around with me 'internally / chemically'.

Hoodia Gordonii - Hoodia is an ugly cactus that grows deep inside the African Kalahari desert thriving in extremely high temperatures.
The San Bushmen of the Kalahari, one of the world's oldest and most primitive tribes, have been eating the Hoodia plant for thousands of years, to stave off hunger during long hunting trips. When South African scientists were routinely testing it, they discovered the plant contained a previously unknown molecule, which has since been christened P57. This molecule fools your brain into believing you are full making it easier to lose that excess weight. Pure Hoodia has no known side-effects, it is stimulant free, will not give you the shakes, make your heart race or raise your body temperature.

I've been on this now for a week (they say it can take up to 4 days to kick-in) and it really does suppress hunger (greed ? ) pangs. I no longer feel wishy-washy between meals, and do not have tummy growlings (i.e quic, go visit the fridge) when trying to sleep.
ergo I am definitely eating less without any chemical imbalances / side effects of any sort whatsoever etc.

I bought mine from hoodia but, obviously, the choice is yours (there is a £5 discount 'voucher').

All I can say is do the research and this thing seems to be, as so many are saying, a positive Goldmine for the people of the Kalahari and the answer to many people's prayers.

Yes, I know, once I've reduced weight sufficiently, I will have to be wary of 'hunger pangs' affecting me and of putting weight back on - but, if the worst comes to the worst, I can pay some £45 for another 150 days of 'self-restraint'.

And, somewhat of a 'true test', currently am under the 'influence' yet feel no compunction whatsoever to dive into the fridge and pig myself.

Next comes the Champix (for the smoking, TBH if this works as well as the Hoodia i.e. in targeting the specific area of the brain) I think I might yet live till I'm 75 or more

Genuinely posted in the hope it will help others who are similarly afflicted

Good luck with the diet mate.

I've lost 1 stone 10lbs so far and been off the cigs since Thur 7th Feb this year.

You will start to feel a lot better for it.

As a stop smoking method, I would strongly recommend a visit to Morningside Acupuncture Clinic UK, John Landale uses neuro acupuncture.. PM me if you want more info.

Re: FWIW Weight Loss May be of use to someone as weak-willed as myself

Have lost serious weight in the past through willpower alone (5 stone in 7 months), and even now I eat very little during the day and do some sort of exercise almost every day too. My problem is that after work and putting Ap0gee Jr to bed, a nice big dinner is extremely appealing, and it's not so much that I'm too hungry to avoid snacking beforehand, but that it's so nice to eat, I don't want to stop...

Different kind of willpower, I guess...

Interesting stuff.

I've lost exactly a stone since last January , but am quite motivated at the moment, hoping come weigh in on Monday another few pounds will have dropped off.

I just find eating a sensible breakfast, lunch and dinner with no snacking between meals, and exercise (15 odd mile bike ride) about 4 times a week is working for me.

Will be interesting to see how long it takes for my weight to plateau, fingers crossed it will be when I get to my ideal weight. If not I'll have to give my regime some more thought!

Drinking lots of water helps make you feel 'full', is cheaper and also helps combat dehydration. I believe you're meant to have 3litres a day, which very few people manage.

Personally I have no willpower when it comes to food. I have to combat that by exercising more. But I really need to address my diet, rather than the amount I eat.

mm, could I take this with Mirtazapine? I have been on these for a while and one of the side-effects is increased appetite and weight gain

I am feeling better in myself but not too happy with my weight, I have put loads on in the past couple of years. I am constantly hungry and feel ill and sick if I do not eat regularly, I BLAME THE TABLETS

Re: FWIW Weight Loss May be of use to someone as weak-willed as myself

I've lost 3 stone over the last couple of years after I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, along with it's 2 little friends, high cholesterol and raised blood pressure.
I lost all the weight through sheer will power -I want to be around to really pee off the insuarnce companies who charge me so much extra! Oh, and to be with my loved ones for as long as possible, obviously.
I'm always wary of any magical ingredients that are supposed to help (especially as hoodia seems to rank as high as Viagra in the spam league!), but if it's working for you, that's great.
I used to go to the gym, but I really haven't the time for it now, so I've got something else to make sure I get regular exercise -an 11 month old Tibetan Terrier who wants walks NOW dammit, and no arguing!
Good luck -it's a long road to travel, but it's woth it. I still want to binge on junk when I'm bored or fed up, but I just look at the photos of me when I was nearly 19 stone, and it stops me.

As with most 'things' I'd advise having a word with your doctor 1st.
I didn't because I'm not on medication - yet
It does however appear to have no side effects (from all I've read).

Some links which might be of interest :-

BBC NEWS | Programmes | Correspondent | Sampling the Kalahari Hoodia diet

BBC World Service | Pills, Patients and Profits

Also - from the site I bought it from
"WARNING
There are now many scam artists on the internet trying to sell what they claim to be Hoodia. In order to ensure that you will receive good quality Hoodia, make sure your supplier satisfies all the following criteria

Make sure your supplier has a South African CITES certificate (you can view ours HERE ). This shows that the Hoodia they are supplying originates in South Africa, which means that it is the genuine article and also that the San People will benefit from the sale odf this Hoodia."

Thought smoking supressed the need to/urge to eat.

Water, true but didn't some woman get brain damage recently because of some water diet?

Reckon I am a stone overweight but I put that down to age and beer!(I started a thread on calories in alcohol)

Have porridge for breakfast, salad for lunch and a normal sized evening meal.Don't think the numerous cups of tea + sugar help though!

Re: FWIW Weight Loss May be of use to someone as weak-willed as myself

Thanks to everyone who commented and, by heck, bl00dy well done for those that managed to lose weight.

............
I've tried not eating as much, drinking more water etc - the problem is then later I'm ravenous and when I try to go to sleep I can't because my stomach is grumbling like fury.
I chose this path because I know myself too well i.e. yes, I could get a bike and then end up not using it, go to a gym and bore myself silly, and on and on..
My weight is constant - but too great. Hopefully I can use this and then maintain the 'not eating' as much as by then the old tum should be acclimatised to eating less.
I could claim that once I'd lost weight I'd exercise more - but again - knowing myself I can't see it happening.

Basically I posted so that anyone else in same dilemna might benefit.

The main thing to remember about all these appetite suppression things that some side effects come from not eating enough.. just because your not hungry doesnt mean you dont need to eat.

Yeah, but if you're 5'10" and 23 stone, you SHOULD be eating less than you do...

Re: FWIW Weight Loss May be of use to someone as weak-willed as myself

Hoodia is an interesting one. I recentely read some medical trials about it's efficiency. Some other tips for when you are eating Val is to make sure you are getting adequate protein in your diet as too many carbs can be addictive and play havoc with your sugar levels making you crave more carbs soon after eating. Try going for the slower releasing carbs known as low G.I. When I was taking the contraceptive pill I craved carbs like nobody's business. As soon as I stopped taking it I lost the urge for them and my body settled down to the weight it should be, it varies around the 8.5 stone mark.

Another theory is to mix carbs and protein in the same meal to keep you going for longer. Although there is yet another weightloss theory that reports separating them will lead to better digestion and weightloss. It's all madness I tell thee!

For anyone on a diet that finds their weightloss has come to a bit of a stand still, try upping your fresh veg intake or increase your exercise regime.

Good luck, it seems like the Hoodia is working for you.

Taa

Changed diet somewhat - not that we ate badly before (for the main meals etc).
Having substantially more vegetables, also now enjoying breakfast (previously hated cereals) as am having Maple and Pecan mix with red grapes and natural yoghurt every day.

Funny thing is that since taking these () pills I now look at the fridge as just a white goods item and no longer as 'ooh, full of goodies '.
