Question GATSO question..

Got flashed this morning on the way into work.

30 zone doing about 31-32 in the middle lane of a 3 lane stretch. The middle lane changes priority at different times of the day i.e. in the morning it serves as an additional lane into town (2 lanes into town 1 lane out), in the evening it switches (2 lanes out of town and 1 lane in) to aid traffic flow.

As stated I was in the middle lane going into town and was flashed by a static Gatso on the other side of the road (pointing out of town)

Should I expect a ticket?

Re: GATSO question..

No, I think your safe, if it was a real gatso its not type approved for forward facing. May well have snapped a driver coming the other way.

Re: GATSO question..

I got flashed doing significantly more than 60 in a NSL by a Gatso facing towards me in the middle of the night (ouch! my eyes!!). Never heard a thing.

Researched on the web and some people claim there is a bug in the firmware of older cameras that means they flash at traffic going both ways once they'r eout of film.

I would 100% agree with you, however there was absoloutley nothing going the other way. Cardiff was very quiet at 0615 this morning

Re: GATSO question..

As Manny says they aren't type approved for forward facing. Truvelo are the forward facing ones.

Assuming that I have identified the camera correctly as a gatso how does one tell the difference?

Re: GATSO question..

Gatso have the square lenses and flash which is white.

The forward facing ones have no dazeling flashes and usually have circular lenses/flash.

Thats true.
I've been told that by a traffic Sgt , and have demonstrated this myself using a Gatso by me.

Re: GATSO question..

what suprises me is the Gatso's, truvelo's etc cameras are set to 'go off' at only 2 or 3 MPH over the limit ! I was talking to a roadside camera van policeman recently who told me the speed detectors in roadside vans have up to 8 - 10 mph tolerence !!

Re: GATSO question..

the only truvelo in cardiff is on pantmawr road in rhiwbina off j32 coryton on to the a 470 then left at the lights and up hill it also swings both ways to catch you coming back down the hill from rhiwbina village
my mates wife got done twice in the same day when they fitted it as she thought it was gatso and went to fast through it head on
she was doing about 34 through it if i remeber right

Yep , or they would be empty far too quickly , rather than just catching the serious speeders.

I did a speed trap once , and we were letting people off doing 39 in a 30 with a warning.
40-54 got an FPN and 55 and above was a trip to court

Re: GATSO question..

Ive been told that the Gatsos radar will detect speed in the area that it covers, whether this be oncoming cars on those which go past it. Whats needed to calculte the speed is the white markings on the road.....

Assuming your going head on to the camera, and its the Gatso version, you would have been flashed but without any white lines to measure your speed - They would have been for the traffic on the other side.

Even if it was a camera that can turn around, you would still have been before the white lines on your side of the road as they are positioned after the camera.

Re: GATSO question..

Nope , they use the radar to calculate your speed which is displayed on the photo.
The lines on the road are there as an additional method of calibration - they can be used to see how far you have travelled in the time between them

Re: GATSO question..

As Alex says the markings are secondary checking the camera's calculation.

The markings on the road are to an engineering standard so that they can be used for evidential purposes.

if your speedo was registering 31 - 32 then your true speed
was probably 28 - 29 cos most speedos read high.....
the faster you go the bigger the difference
