| Briskodian | Giving to aid appeals(Pakistan) Another tragedy and rather upsetting. Listening to the radio appeals for money,£90 buys a 'winter tent'.People have no homes and the survivors now have winter coming. My predicament is I genuinly can't get it in my head that a donation will truly reach its destination. To hear rubbish about aid agencies virtually fighting amongst themselves bugs me. I feel like that about all appeals.Jane just sets up direct debits for the charities of our choice every year.I shouldn't feel like this about instant requests for help but I do. ![]() |

| My wife and I have followed our consciences and donated via the DEC - as we did following the Tsunami Appeal.

| I support several charities via direct debit/standing order. Some are UK only, others are worldwide. No doubt a whole lot of cash gets redirected to places it shouldn't go. But regardless of that (and it is a big problem in some areas) - without the cash to oil the wheels, nothing would ever arrive. It is sick to have to bribe people in certain places to get help to those who are most in need, but that's unfortunately the way it is. Another reason I do the 'monthly donation' thing is because that way the organisations can work out how to redistribute the dosh themselves. As always with donations though, I'd say give to those you want to give to, or if you really are able to do so, perhaps volunteer to work with/for an organisation for a while. That way you KNOW your efforts will be useful, and there is no nagging feeling about the money aspect. I was frankly disgusted by what originally happened between India & Pakistan with one of the 'joint' areas - fortunately that seems to have been resolved for the purpose of the aid effort at this point. Sincerely hope the help arrives where it is needed most though, regardless of where it is in the world.
