Health and body fat question pls...

Someone has said elsewhere that they are OK BMI but low on body fat. I am too, apparently, but I was told only to eat more protein, pref some veg with iron (though seemingly my iron count is OK). However, the question asked from another is how to put on body fat without just eating fat and thus putting on weight just from eating fat, which I have to agree is a question I wouldn't know the answer to, as logically it's nonsense to put on weight from eating fat.

I understand all the "muscle weighs heavier" and better to build up muscle type things. I just think it's a valid question as to how to increase body fat - to please whatever measuring device "they" use - and I don't know an answer to that

I'm sure this will make sense to peeps who understand these things.

Re: Health and body fat question pls...

I remember reading somewhere that if you have just two-three meals per day your body prepare for starvation/uncertain food supply and store energy by converting food to fat. In order to stay slim you should have more meals per day - your body will be reassured that there's plenty of stuff coming and will speed up metabolism. That was an advice for reducing fat but presumably it should work just as well the other way round? So instead of a frequent input of cakes and chocolate bars, increase intervals between meals.

Also your body does need a certain amount of fat to work properly, so don't cut fats out all together.

Re: Health and body fat question pls...

At my fittest, I had a BMI of 29.5 (borderline obese). I was running 5'30" miles, and was training so hard that I was eating double portions of three cooked meals per day, and was still slowly losing weight. There are too many variables relating to build that can skew BMI IMHO. I don't know how effective 'fat measuring' scales are, but they'd be a better indicator of your health by the sounds of things. I realise that a bit of fat's especially important for women, but unless you can see ribcage instead of cleavage or something, I can't imagine your fat levels are so low as to be unhealthy...

Re: Health and body fat question pls...

Many thanks for replies. After ages of thinking about the subject and your replies, I'm just not sure that it's possible to gain body fat except at the expense of muscle (starvation mode) if hoping to stay the same size whilst eating a healthy diet (healthy meaning one designed to stay healthy without putting on size mainly or weight), since if one eats healthily and according to exercise taken and metabolic rate, one wouldn't gain fat, methinks.

It's certainly not for me to offer words of wisdom to someone who has a serious struggle with eating, let alone getting fat, I just understood the dilemma and knew I could ask on here

As fat is needed to feed one's body "bits", I'm not sure to what extent stored fat is important since if eating healthily and all "bits" are fed, then body fat must be an excess (ready for hard times I guess), so why is one told that xyz amount is needed as a measure of health?

Well I know what I mean.

Regards
Mo
