Holiday to Ireland

The family holiday this year is again to Ireland - Killarney to be exact. We will travel over to Larne or Belfast. Last year we went via Galway (overnight in Galway City) and Clare. Year before we went via Dublin. This year we want to go "through the middle". Any suggestions for a nice place to overnight?

TIA

Lots of nice places in the middle, and some not so nice ones. When we go over, we stay with friends in Nenagh. That part of the world is quiet nice, along with Lough Derg and Killaloe and Ballina. I would avoid Limerick, really bad traffic and some dodgy areas although it also has some good bits.

Limerick has been by-passed now, so shouldn't be a problem. Killaloe would be a nice stopover, but I'd say is a bit too close to your destination.

For the trip down, I'd take the N55 route followed by the N62. Its prettty scenic, some hills, bogs etc. and its "in the middle" of the country. The N62 will take you not a million miles from Killaloe also. I'd then take the N75 onto the N7 and go through Cashel and Mitchesltown and then the N73 toward Killarney. Cashel being another scenic place to stay. I've taken the N73 once or twice in a hurry. Its very scenic although I was concentrating on driving at the time. Or you could go down to Cork and then up to Killarney. Good roads from Cork and a scenic drive too.

That looks good...........what's Athlone like as a place to stay? As for dodgy areas - you should see where I stay

Athlone is a nice place, harbour et all. I've had relations live there for years, and they liked the place - I haven't heard any complaints!
