I always thought you couldnt get them wet whilst heeling as this helps speed up fading?

Re: How much does a Tattoo hurt

I was told that it's the ink drying that makes them fade which is why you should moisturise them every day.
And that when healing you shouldn't get soap on them as it's something in the soap that dries the ink out.
Once the skin is healed it's okay because the ink is under your top layer of skin.

Still toying with the idea.

How big and where are the stumblers.

Where would be the best place to get a henna trial run before committing to a full blow tattoo?

Re: How much does a Tattoo hurt

Like someone said earlier, a tattoo is for life , so make sure its the right design and the right place on your body.

I,m only built like a twig, it is painful in places, but after about 5-10 mins it doesn,t bother me. Ive got 5 now, and it is very addictive. Just booked up for my next sessions.

Hope you make the right decision

Keeping the wound wet stops scabbing but as, essentially, it's still an open wound it can 'weep' which can pull ink out and/or 'dilute' the ink in some circumstances, making colour fade.

Letting it dry and scab can also draw ink out into the scab, but scabbing's big problem is knocks and/or itching, if a scab is pulled off then it takes skin and ink with it, making the tattoo patchy. Also, if the tattoo is not entirely consistent with the ink depth then scabbing can give patchy fading as more/less ink is drawn up or dries out.

Once the skin has healed then moisturing won't really do anything. It can freshen up the colours temporarily by clearing the skin, but it won't affect the ink. Sunlight is the biggest enemy of a healed tattoo as it will break down the inks. Sunblock is a must, and where possible just avoid direct sunlight on your tattoo.

I was told not to get my tattoo wet at all for the first three days, then it can be washed (without direct water ie shower etc.) and have the aftercare/dressing reapplied twice a day, after that, no dressing and reapply the aftercare throughout the day not letting it dry out. I have a few tiny patches where my willpower lost out and I've itched a bit much, but there's no fading and it's been four years now since I started it.

I think the dry method is big in America, and if it goes well it apparently (I'm told) keeps colours very vibrant, especially the harder ones like yellows. But I prefer the idea of the wet method, and feel it's only polite to follow my tattooists instructions.

My biggest tip for tattoos would be to find a good tattooist that you get on with and does quality work. It's there forever; and not every tattooist does work that you'd want there forever. If they're not happy to talk it over with you first or show you examples of their work then walk away. I travel to another city for my work, even though there's dozens of places closer. Simply becasue I have a good relationship with my tattooist and I know his work is good. I went to 4 places before choosing him, and spoke to many more on the phone.

Also; get the work you want. Don't compromise on price, position, size or anything. I never understand people who get a tattoo for the sake of having one rather than because they want a specific design.

As big as you want it, and wherever you want it - as I said above, afterwards (when you realise it wasn't that bad) how are you gonna feel thinking that you got it in the 2nd best place because you were scared? And that's gonna be there for the rest of your life telling you that.

That said, fleshy parts generally hurt the most, as do places on the bone. Bits with muscle tend to be the easiest. Inner elbow, elbow tip, armpit, neck and ball of your shoulder hurt most (from my own experience) I'm told your belly is awful (but she was a girl ) hips aren't fun but my mate said when he had the one done on the back of his head it didn't hurt much but you could feel every vibration going through your skull.

Unless you're after a chunky tribal design, henna won't really give you an idea. Plus it's monochromatic, and the wrong colour. If you're going down that route just get a permanent black marker, or be sad like me: I drew the design up on paper and cut them out to try it on me. You look like an ar5e, but it helps.

If you're set on it then henna powder is quite cheap, just mix it up with some lemon juice and leave it overnight and you can practice on yourself. Or there's premixed stuff on eBay quite cheap.

Re: How much does a Tattoo hurt

Ideas for places would be top arm (above short sleeve line), pec or shoulder.

I like the idea of one between shoulder blades, below T shirt neck line.

Hiden, a) to keep out of sun, and b) because work wouldnt like it much.
