| Briskodian | Re: How much "Keep" do you pay I live out of home and have done for 10 years give or take a few months between uni terms. Relatives pay £200-£250 each month so yes they are getting off light. A room in a share rented house is minimum £250 plus bills is say £325 then add food and the laundry service etc that has to be at least £350 a month. That means they are saving over £200 a month. I find is shocking how many people approaching 30 still live at the family home. As to whoever feels ripped off at £160, you're having a f**king giraffe mate. Work out what rent and bills would cost you, plus all the extras you get living at home and you will soon see how cheap that is.

![]() ![]() Not everyone wants to share, I suppose if you have done the uni thing it's alright as your used to it. But if youhave lived at home all your life the tought of sharing may be a bit daunting. My mate just jumped ship recently and bought a flat and he only did it because his parent lobbed him half the money, other than that he would still be sat in their house, as he couldn't afford the full mortagage on his own, he has avery good income as well.

| Re: How much "Keep" do you pay Why not? Plenty of affordable houses out there - only thing which prevents most people buying houses is a) they've spent all their money on a new car, and b) they expect their first house to be in a "half-decent" area, rather than starting at the bottom and working their way up. Like their parents probably had to. ![]() Rob. |

This is a "quarter decent" area in cardiff. You wouldn't want to leave any valueables in your car at night though. I'm no expert, but the mortgage would be circa 650-700 pm. Most under 30 and single in this area wouldn't get a look in on the mortgage with the current financial markets and the wages they get paid. These flats used to go for around 15-20k a few back.

| Re: How much "Keep" do you pay i pay £250 per month, and partly live at home with mum (when she is here as she spends most time at her HWMBO) and at SWMBO's with her mum. My £250 does not include food, or washing but includes electric, gas and water. from what i gather its more or less half the bills as the house is paid for so no mortgage or anything. SWMBO pays about £300 a month for a room at her mums with no cooking or washing done and actually does the housework. she too has to get her own food in on topof it. i guess mr octygone you could easily charge double then tell them to buy their own food. just think of those nice holidays you and swmbo could then take ![]() |

swmbo lost her house, i got priced out 10 years ago whilst battling for access to minitext. i know many people in the same situation or where 6 of them are renting a 2 bedroom flat and have converted the living room into a third bedroom just so thye could move out. my brother has his own place, part of his contract was a house with rent of around 200 quid ish a month but goes up to 700 of he leaves his job.

| Briskodian | Re: How much "Keep" do you pay So why not rent? People can get a 2 bed flat for £500 + bills so rather than living at home move out with your other half. 1 bedroom flat about £400 + bills. My point was more that people rely on the family home and parents being there and what if they could not afford to put you up. What if your parents suddenly move to spain (as per a friend of mine) and you have to find you're own place. I mean look on here, people driving new cars in high insurance groups and living at home. My first car was a 950cc fiesta that probably shouldn't have had the MOT i got it with. The second car was a hand me down from the family with a value of close zero that I had to fix a reasonable amount on to get it to pass the next MOT. All small things and all DIYable but none the less. The people spending 6-10k on a car, then saying they can't afford to move out, don't IMHO really have a leg to stand on. Also last I looked (couple of weeks ago) flats in Abingdon were going for a lot less than £200k and closer to £120k for a 2 bed flat.

![]() And it is where the "work" is in these parts, You could travel up the hills (valleys)but your looking at 1.5hours travel and the cost of said travel, as there is no work up there since everything closed (mines etc). How far do you live from your family Rob or the area you grew up in??

| Re: How much "Keep" do you pay With all due respect your probably in a better position than most to get a mortgage on those figures. |

| Briskodian | Re: How much "Keep" do you pay Quote:
I have shared, only bought what I need and put whatever I can away for a deposit should houses ever become more reasonable. £120k mortgage will need a 10% deposit so £108k and that would then work out at just over 3.5 times a £30k wage. That is more than I earn, so I couldn't do that alone, but sharing it with the other half and suddenly it comes a lot more affordable. People need to get their priorities right. Having a fast, thirsty, expensive car is all well and good, but it looks rather silly on the drive to your parents house.

| Briskodian | Re: How much "Keep" do you pay On the work is in cardiff line I know plenty of people who moved from up north to down south or down south to up north to get a job and get a house where it was cheap enough to afford.

| Re: How much "Keep" do you pay Well I thought I paid £150, but my mum's just told me she actually takes £130, but my dad thinks it's £150 lol! I found that pretty funny! She just takes it straight out of my bank so I never really know! She buys some of my other stuff like shampoo etc. If she happens to buy me clothes or other bits and pieces that she thinks I might like, she sometimes takes the money back, or some of it, so I don't do too bad I guess ![]()

| Re: How much "Keep" do you pay Oh, I just remembered, I keep having to loan them money for stuff anyway! I lent them a couple of grand when we had the bathroom done up, and now we have another house which has just been gutted and done up and I'm gonna have to lend them another couple of grand! Interest free! How rude! They weren't planning on doing the bathroom as they'd just bought the house and paid for all the rest of it to be done up, so didn't have enough spare cash ![]() I can bet I'm the only one whose parents have ever come to them for a loan! lol!

A friend has just started at my work out of uni and his parents charge 10% of his take home a month which he thinks is more than fair. I am 24 and lucky enough to own a place with my fiance due inheritence she had but had we not had it we would have scrapped together enough for a deposit and brought a 1 bed flat or rented. Uni friends brother has lived at home since he left school with his parents and he uses it like a hotel and knock in shop and moans at the £50 a week rent he has to pay when he has a 32" LCD, Xbox 360, 5.1 surround system, expensive mobile etc etc. Yet his brother who was at uni had to pay 1.5 times that for rent before bills etc whilst at uni! I think kids need to be taught the value for money; my parents did and has really helped. I like the idea of the putting the money a side and then using it as a stepping stone for them. If you do it on the sly then it will be a nice little present for them then ![]() Personally for the wages I am on and if I was living at home I would expect to pay 250-300 per month

| Briskodian | Re: How much "Keep" do you pay It looks like I might be missing something. I'm just coming up to 65 and my kid is 19. He decided that he'd like to take a year long break between 6th Form and University, so he got a job at Currys. The hours were variable, so some weeks he didn't earn much. He supplemented that by working in a nightclub as bar supervisor on the few nights a week they opened. It still didn't add up to much so I gave him £100 a month pocket money. Three days a week he'd work at Currys until 6pm, start at the club at 9pm, get home at 4am and start back at Currys at 9am. So he was putting some effort in. I shipped him off to Canada for a winter season skiing in January. Obviously he couldn't work and ski all the time, so I gave him £400 a month pocket money. (The cost of living was not cheap.) He did ok and came back a CSIA level 2 ski instructor. Then he went off to India paying for most of it himself and worked for free in a clinic there. I kept paying him the pocket money. He's home now having lost a lot of weight and been snacked on by a wide range of insects for many weeks. He's giving some thought to getting a job before going to university but not made much progress, so I've been really hard on him and cut the pocket money to £100 a month. I thought spending everything you earn on your family was normal behaviour. It appears there is a school of thought that believes he should be giving me money. I find that quite appealing as I retire in about five months. Can anyone explain how it works? ![]() |

| Re: How much "Keep" do you pay Just before I left home in 2006 I was paying £250/month. which was a little over 25% of what I was earning. Seemed a little steep at the time until I came to move out and my parents gave me a cheque for £20k ![]() I think it is a good idea that kids pay rent if they are earning. I've got some friends who have never paid a penny (and don't help round the house)and while they have every gadget going, they have no idea how to budget. |

I myself was never 'asked' as such to pay any rent or keep - I just started once I was 16. I worked what I use at home and what I will have to pay in september when I'm at uni... Uni Room - £45 Per Week. Washing - £20 Month Food - £35 Per Week. (Phone Bills and Internet I get free with work anyway so this didn't come into it). All in all - I give £200 A month towards living at home. I don't have to - but I do. (This is only £50 a week) Just think about this - If your Son and Daughter were to move out. How much would they have to pay to rent a house in Marlborough. Then how much money would they have to spend on food ect (Remember they get % Off). People have to live and still need to have enough money left over to run cars and have fun. I would suggest you talk to them about it and see what they can afford and see if they feel the need to pay some more after all it's currently £105.00/4 = £26.25 a week for everything. Rob
