The hours were variable, so some weeks he didn't earn much. He supplemented that by working in a nightclub as bar supervisor on the few nights a week they opened. It still didn't add up to much so I gave him £100 a month pocket money. Three days a week he'd work at Currys until 6pm, start at the club at 9pm, get home at 4am and start back at Currys at 9am. So he was putting some effort in.

I shipped him off to Canada for a winter season skiing in January. Obviously he couldn't work and ski all the time, so I gave him £400 a month pocket money. (The cost of living was not cheap.) He did ok and came back a CSIA level 2 ski instructor.

Then he went off to India paying for most of it himself and worked for free in a clinic there. I kept paying him the pocket money. He's home now having lost a lot of weight and been snacked on by a wide range of insects for many weeks. He's giving some thought to getting a job before going to university but not made much progress, so I've been really hard on him and cut the pocket money to £100 a month.

I thought spending everything you earn on your family was normal behaviour. It appears there is a school of thought that believes he should be giving me money. I find that quite appealing as I retire in about five months. Can anyone explain how it works?
Fancy adopting a 23 year old lad???

It's taken me a while to read through all the posts (wasn't expecting that many ) ....but to answer a few things, they don't earn a great deal working in a supermarket and if I could afford it they would go free.....but as things are we are starting to feel the pinch but were willing to forego a few things and keep the "rent" the same for a while.........with misspiggy earning less and would you believe starting to save a little money we thought her and her boyfriend would be looking for somewhere to live and by doing this we could help them ....then the bombshell misspiggy comes in last night and says "I have just bought a motorbike .....not my favourite things (had too many friends killed and badly injured on bikes) so we have given her the option of deciding to not keep the bike and keeping the rent the same or keep the bike and the rent goes up ....steeply....we are not happy all her savings have gone and she still has to tax, insure, service and get the car repaired this month.

Am I wrong in thinking what I do that she has thrown money away

Yup, I'd agree!

When I was 16 and had some inklings about a bike, my parents said "you can get one, but don't expect to live here"!

Re: How much "Keep" do you pay

I did my Motorbike Theory test earlier this year when a friend gave me a motorbike. When I told my parents, they went nuts, and basically told me I wasn't welcome to live at home if I had a motorbike. Being sympathetic to their feelings (and my wallet), I didn't go any further with the bike training.

Hehehe , I can understand why that didn't go down well.

Nothing wrong with bikes IMO , but they are either a necessity for travel or a luxury for fun , and it sounds like it's the latter.

Re: How much "Keep" do you pay

Well I am 17 and dont have to pay rent - but have to do jobs around the house. Mowing the lawn, Painting, Cleaning etc I guess you could say I am one of the lucky ones

But I have a SV650 and my mum and dad baught it for me as a 18th birthday gift.
My dad does not mind as he had one when he was a kid. But my mum hates seeing me on one, it scares her. But my both my grandad's had bikes and they are not to bothered.

Well a bike is not cheap. Once she has the bike she has to:

1. CBT (thats about £130 then the bike test itself is about £400)
2. Insure the bike (my insurance is £1000 but my bike is 650cc and I am only 17)
3. Tax (£15 for a 125cc)
4. All the protective gear (Helmet, Jacket, Trousers, Boots about £300 - £400)
5. If its a old bike MOT and Services (price depends what the problem is )
6. Fuel (depends on the size of the tank)

all I can say is best of luck and its your own opinion

cheers

Oh dear - Could have been worse. Did Skoda make a chip stick or anything for that colour or will it have to be a re-spray??

Re: How much "Keep" do you pay

Im lucky enough not to pay rent, but i help out and i cook for my mum and dad quite alot. do the chores etc.

but in a way i guess helping my mum pay towards the plans is a way of paying rent?

This was done by somthing climbing onto the car .

I don't get how it can cause so much damage - I had cat issues with the clio so used some pepper on it as they were starting to mark the paint.

Would you prefer the car to be booked into Skoda to have the work done or an idependant firm. - There are a few close to me in Swindon that do a great job - They do cost a fair bit though!

Post some pictures up and I will pop-in and have a word on Monday for you.

My point was more that people rely on the family home and parents being there and what if they could not afford to put you up. What if your parents suddenly move to spain (as per a friend of mine) and you have to find you're own place.

I mean look on here, people driving new cars in high insurance groups and living at home.

My first car was a 950cc fiesta that probably shouldn't have had the MOT i got it with. The second car was a hand me down from the family with a value of close zero that I had to fix a reasonable amount on to get it to pass the next MOT. All small things and all DIYable but none the less.

The people spending 6-10k on a car, then saying they can't afford to move out, don't IMHO really have a leg to stand on.

Also last I looked (couple of weeks ago) flats in Abingdon were going for a lot less than £200k and closer to £120k for a 2 bed flat.
Cheeze, dont start getting into a bitching match with me, you know nothing about me. you have no dependents to pay out for and no csa taking huge sums from you each month. fyi my mum yes could sell up at anytime, but she has always said in which case she would lend me some money for a deposit. however she knows that the money she has made on the house and that mortar (even with the prices dropping) tend to go up that her money will be a bit safer there and even safer knowing that I and not some dodgy drug dealer is looking after the house (and not growing certain green plants in every room).

I also dont live in abingdon or work in adbingdon and the places you are looking at are in the town centre with no parking.

To then go on about peoples car is kettle black to me. I started up from a rusty £300 sierra to what i got today, I have had to deal with over 10k of debt from when i fought for access in court for my daughter. 5k loan from an ex for a wedding that never happened (in a way thank god) and then on top of that i worked every hour under the sun for two years so i could get a deposit for my car along with the money to pay off all existing loans. I have since had to change jobs due to personal circumstances and now take home £100 less a week. I work for my money as apposed to being sat on ones bum behind a computer in an office playing pinball or solitaire all day long.

I dont have a vrs partly cos i couldnt afford one, secondly i plan to have this car minimuim of 5 and probably closer to 7 years before i will be getting another one, to me that is money well spent as i know the car will last 3 years on a warrenty and from experience cars dont tend to go wrong till they are a good 5 year plus, by which point money spent on an old banger to keep it on the road and replacing old bangers with another old banger kinda becomes more expensive than just buying a car to last a good few years.

Lastly I wasnt lucky like you to have the joys of university. when i left school my dad was unfortunatley out of work due to the recession. getting into work was more important to keep the family afloat, with leaving school with barely any qualifications to get to what ive achieved so far in life i think is enough.

I have to do extra curicular work just to make ends meet let alone have anything left to buy nice bits for the Golf. Just seem to work all day and most evenings just to survive, picked the wrong trade to be in thts for sure.

p.s Im only on here now and not working as I went to the unit this morning, didnt have half the bits I needed to get the work done I wanted to come home in a huff.

Re: How much "Keep" do you pay

lol, this just proves the wife is being greedy,i'll give her pocket money, and keep the rest, this modding two cars at once is not cheap you know

And trust me luck has nothing to do with it,100+ hours a week is the key

another top tip is pick up any odds and ends of scrap metal you find laying about, even the lowest grade is £160 per ton minimum at the moment.
