| Re: How much "Keep" do you pay I pay 120 a month.... For bills, food etc. But I rarely eat at home due to work. I used to Pay 250 a month, but my parents agreed i could cut it back to put more money into paying off my debts and saving for a new sailling dinghy (which ive got) and save for a car/house |

| Re: How much "Keep" do you pay What should I be charging my 3 month old son? ![]() I've never paid my parents any keep as I kicked myself out of home at 18 to go to uni and paid rent/mortgage and bills for the last 11 years. I think the least rent I ever paid (in a 3 person house share) was about £140 a month and that was in 2000/01. Back in 2001/02 I was earning £5.50 an hour, full time, took home about £180 per week and paying £200 per month rent (house share). On that basis I think a lot of you are getting off very lightly ![]() |

| Briskodian | Re: How much "Keep" do you pay So not paying rent at 22 would be frowned upon by you lot then? ![]() Spent 2 years at uni because my hand was forced into going when I didn't really want to be there as I had no real idea as to what I wanted to do and hence no drive. Working in a call centre for the last 2 years for a financial insitution has bored me to tears and I'm now looking to complete my degree and get a real job abroad. I don't currently pay any rent as I'm never there. most weekends I'm away and most evenings i'm either working late or off out doing things for people so i'm there for less than 30 hours a week. I do save as much as possible just now so that when i'm at uni and doing the necessary extra courses I can afford them. |

There are circumstances where living at home is the only option, but in other cases where people can take out a big car loan and have sky high insurance but can't afford to rent there is a issue. Fair enough there is no CSA issue for me but the people I'm aiming this to are not in that position either. Abingdon was an example of a nice enough area and the flats in question were as per a member on here who you will know. Car, I have a standard diesel after years of owning cheap run abouts, hardly a pot/kettle moment as I don't live at home and have not for years. Nothing expensive and purchased nearly new to save me a lot of money. Again not at all directed at you. Finally again not having a go, but my father got made redundant for being over 40 in a similar time to that and I have a large student loan to pay off for the `privilege` of going to uni. I don't get paid a stack and have to pay that back. If I do end up earning more than the average person I'll be paying it all back in tax on top of the loan. Anyway, as I said it wasn't aimed at you.

For a comparison self storage for the space of a single bedroom is about £110 a month down here.

I don't so that's not a problem. The degree is a means to an end so that I can get into a particular industry which I have a number of relevant skills for rather than being a degree for degree's sake! | |

| Re: How much "Keep" do you pay no probs cheezemonkhai, just wanted to make a point. SWMBO is going through bankruptcy and the people dealing with it tried to find her a place to rent in Abingdon on the money she is on (as it will help her case they kept saying). She explained she couldnt afford the prices around here and when they did a search they actually agreed with her it was ridicilous the prices being charged. SWMBO also saw what you posted and was not very happy which was another reason i replied to your post. Where in Abingdon were you looking? |

| Re: How much "Keep" do you pay I find it a bit offensive that a young person with a regular income - even if it's as modest as £10k - should be living at home for free, able to spend everything on "luxuries" - cars, pub nights, travels abroad. So yes, kids should pay something. How much is, of course, depending on circumstances, parents' financial status and so on. Do you eat at home, and if so, how many meals? Telephone, electricity, water, soap, shampoo, washing powder... Parents who can afford it can of course put the rent aside as savings for the future (downpay on house/apartment, uni fees or whatever). And of course one can agree on part payment in kind - housecleaning, cooking, gardening, car/house maintenance...

| Briskodian | Re: How much "Keep" do you pay I pay £90 a month, for everything. works out at something like 23 or 25% of my monthly wages - £520, which goes down to £499.77 after tax. minus 90 for rent, minus 250 for savings, minus 160 for driving lessons actually leaves me slightly down. If i want spending money for either going out, or random stuff like toiletries and stuff, that comes out of the savings budget or the driving lessons budget. Recently gone onto contract for mine and swmbo's phones, so thats around... £50 per month, means one less driving lesson per month. My car is (currently half paid for) a L reg peugeot 205, which cost me £90 from work. as for getting another job, forget it. i work 42.5 hours average a week as it is. |

| Briskodian | Re: How much "Keep" do you pay Thats the price you pay for being an apprentice. don't get minimum wage until you've been in the job a year and over 19. even though i'm 19, only started last october, so pittance pay all the up till then, unfortunately. |

| Re: How much "Keep" do you pay When I finished Uni I went back to live with my parents "for a few months, 'til I find somewhere", and ended up staying for nearly 3 years due to the prices so close to London. I was paying £216 per month, with 4 adults in the house, and we all contributed equally (excluding the mortgage). I was in full-time employment, and didn't really notice it going, as I had everything I needed provided.

| Briskodian | Re: How much "Keep" do you pay If you are still living at home after leaving school /college/Uni yes you should pay something and a percentage of your monthly salary is a good idea, also a good idea is the parent putting some if not all that money away for you , without your knowlege for when you leave home , it gets you used to paying your way in life so then it's not too much of a shock for when you do it for real .

| Re: How much "Keep" do you pay Me and my misses split up about 7 months ago, i moved back to the parents and pay £170 a month. I'm 23 and earn 24k a year, the reason I'm living at home and not renting is cause I'm saving for a deposit on a house. Once sorted I'll move out again |
