| This mower we bought on Saturday . . . hmm, I'm beginning to wonder if it's a 4-stroke. It doesn't say anywhere in the manual, or on any website (except for one and it's just a random shopping site). Is there any way to tell? It sounds quite like a four stroke in that there isn't a constant metallic pinking noise that 2-stroke motorcycles etc. make, plus there appears to be what looks a bit like an oil sump (the oil fill is low down and the oil tray seems to go under the engine). Can anyone shed any light on this? The engine in question is a Briggs and Stratton 450 Classic. Assuming this is a 4-stroke, it mentions "SAE-30" oil on it. Can fully synthetic engine oil be used, e.g., 5w30? Or is this a special oil type? Cheers. ![]()

| Re: Lawnmower oil question Yep 4 stroke. From the literature... Oil Recommendations To optimize engine performance, use Warranty Certified Briggs & Stratton Small Engine Oil. Briggs & Stratton offers a Synthetic 5W-30 oil that provides the best protection at all temperatures as well as improved starting with less oil consumption. For optimum performance, you should change the oil in your small engine after the first five hours of use and then annually, or every 50 hours of use (whichever comes first). * Use Briggs & Stratton SAE 30W Oil above 40°F (4°C) for all of our engines. * Check oil level regularly. * Air-cooled engines burn about an ounce of oil per cylinder, per hour. * Fill to mark on dipstick. DO NOT OVERFILL. __________________________________________________ _________________ So Synthetic 5-30 sounds fine.

| Re: Lawnmower oil question Cheers guys. ![]() From that literature, does that imply that a fully sythetic 5w30 oil would be suitable, ala, car engine oil? Certainly would seem cheaper than the £6/litre that B&Q want. ![]()

| Re: Lawnmower oil question Cheers. Looks like 5w30 will be good stuff for it, I can get a gallon of it for £17 from the motofactors and that should last for years. ![]() Briskoda Boffins to the rescue again.
