| Check Multimap and do a journey listing, it should give you a rough indication of the length of time needed. Then subtract that from 10.30am. Don't forget that it will not be completely accurate as it doesn't take into consideration rush hour etc.

| Briskodian | I do Birmingham to carlisle a couple of times a year, usually takes 4 - 41/2 hours with one stop. So if you allow an extra 1/2 hr from leicester you wont be far out. I never go in rush hour so allow extra for that.

| I say leave 6 hours, so leaving at 4.30am. I did Carlisle to Leicester (unintentionally) when I picked up Fabia mkII from Scotland. I got a bit tired and realise I wasn't going to make it to Devon in one go, so dived off to stay with the relations near Leicester. Was about 6 hours just cruising down the M6, came off at Rugby, then past Lutterworth to "home" (south of the city) I guess for Leicester itself you come off earlier and hit the M69 into the city - Would be a bit shorter. As an aside, I can never see a sign for the M69 without s******ing.... ![]()

| Thanks guys. Jason, you went the long way - a50 (stoke- derby) would knock at least an hour off! I hope ![]()

| Only 212 miles? surprising? Felt longer. ![]() A50, eh? Don't think I've ever used that road. I just assumed as the M6 went to Carlisle you'd wanna get on it a.s.a.p, and the M69 [s****** s****** ] seemed the best route.Anyway, I'm a Devonian now, not a Midlander so can't really comment as a "yokel" now ![]()

| I went to Scotland this way a few weeks ago. Sadly, I can't remember the journey time but the figures quoted above seem sensible. Try M1 - A50 and then join the M6 at Stoke. Don't bother with the M69: you'd be heading south-west to go north-west and there's no point in going through the most congested bits of the West Midlands needlessly. | Autoroute 2005 comes out with 214 miles and 3hrs 12mins. You'd also spend £20.63 in diesel, according to my Fab vRS consumption figures and 96p/litre diesel ![]() Route is from city-centre to city-centre. CLICK if you fancy having a look at the route it takes you (PDF format, 380KB). I always find the AutoRoute times are the quickest possible on quiet roads doing reasonable, slightly above limit speeds. So take into consideration your rush-hour time on the M6 ![]() Steve

| That map makes it very obvious the M69... [s****** s******] isn't the way to go. How good a road is the A50? Is it mostly dual carriageway?

| A50 Stoke is blocked up with roadworks at the moment, also M6 north bound from 16 (end of A500 fed by A50 @15), with specs @ 40...why 40 ffs I digress. After that other than Thelwall it's pretty quiet, but lancashire operate bridge cash machines so be wary. So you might want to think about A50/Buxton/Leek/M6# options. Or since it's more than 4 hours push for a night in the westmorland hotel the night before, assuming it's work related...far better than the crack of pre dawn, especially if you have to get back the same day.

| Briskodian | Definitely the A50, avoid as much of the M6 as you can! |

| Oh and the A50 for many years used to be more like a mad max road ![]() Then cameras were invented and doubled your journey time as well as making it tiresome to spot them...very quick road, but camera honey pot, you'd never see him ![]()

| Did it with a drive time of 3h30 on the trip computer - stopped once too but the car didn't record that. Having read the above I'm up for a few points by the sound of it
