| Briskodian | Lets have a spit roast I thought the title might get some of you to look at this thread but I'm not been rude honest. Brother inlaw and myself are looking at building a hog roast for the summer and I was wondered if anyone else had done something similar? I'm thinking of trying to get hold of an old cylinder (found an old compressed air one on ebay but it's in southampton) and starting from that. I'm trying to spec up a motor but a geared single phase motor is well expensive (need about 4rpm final output), a three phase motor with control seems abit OTT and I'm not sure whether a geared dc motor would be man enough (although some of the commercial machines seem to user this). I'm currently using a brinkman proffesional smoker but if anyone has got any advice or indeed parts that may be of use please let me know |

| Re: Lets have a spit roast I thought the traditional way was just a great big spike shoved up its a55 and it left to sit over an open fire? Maybe some of it wrapped in foil for a time, I'm not sure. It doesn't need to turn all the time. I think it can quite happily just sit in one position for XX minutes, then move. For cooking times I would refer to some where. Google might be your friend. ![]() at brother in law and you hoping for a spit roast! I had a spit roasted pig at the wedding I went to on Vancouver Island, but it came ready cooked - I never saw it in action.

I guess you could leave bad reputation as a disappointed / peeved pervert? ![]() So I don't get flamed for "comedy" in the Hotel, here's a serious link which might be useful. ![]() http://www.pughspiglets.co.uk/id28.html

| Briskodian | Re: Lets have a spit roast You could get one of those green pigs so your guests glow in the dark, saving on garden torches? (*) Given Keith Floyd cooks on "wood mark 6", I wonder if the amount of heat generated needs to be taken seriously into the equation, since I think it's one of those meats which has to be cooked through properly methinks. (*) Ooops! Stands by to be flamed for comedy in The Hotel I thought it was still allowed though, within reason? Regards Mo |

| Re: Lets have a spit roast I just had a quote from hogroasting.com - a machine to buy is £2750. Can see why you're building one! Is it not for just one-off use, so hiring out of the question?

| Briskodian | Re: Lets have a spit roast We can get the pig at cost (father inlaw is a livestock farmer) and having seen the pictures of the hog roasts available they range from £2795 to £2995 which seems a bit excessive. A motor assembly from RS is anything from £100 to £150 if going down the gas route the burners can be bought brand new for £25 each (3/6 required) and my mate is married to the boss of a non ferus metal supplier so the stainless would be at cost. Having now done hours of research I've come to the conclusion that there is no wrong or right way of building one so I think I'm going for a 25x25mm angle frame with the stainless bent around. If it comes off I could do a demo at a Briskoda meet (FOC). I've also done some research and you can charge between £450 and £800 for a corporate event for depending on the amount catered for (previously catered for 80 on my smoker at a football club party) |

| Re: Lets have a spit roast Several people I know own proper hog roasters and a couple have tried to build their own. On the building bit, the biggest problem I have seen is getting the correct power motor with decent gearing mating properly onto the spit. If the spit isn't strong enough, the motor not powerful enough or the gearing not flexible (and slow) enough the whole thing fails. The making of the barrel shouldn't be too difficult, given your contacts, and the gas system is actually very simple as long as you site it properly on the sides. Just as an aside, it might be worth having a look at a proper hog-roaster to get some tips on size (bigger than you think), siting of burners, drains, gearing and spit adjustments etc. Good luck
