I have to say I actually quite liked them until recently.
A lot of what they were saying was pretty sensible but now they seem to have totally lost the plot

Re: Liberal Democrat's proposed new car tax bands

I have always been lib dem, but that kind of nonsense is only going to win votes from the green minority.

Cars are not the biggest CO2 polluters in any event. Whilst the governments in power continue to subsidise air transport, increased road tax is nothing but a joke.

If they seriously wanted to reduce pollution, they need only implement a world class public transport system, but of course, that costs money.

Whilst I agree with the idea in principal - would make not an iota of difference to pollution.

Either way, I'm pretty safe in my wee Corsa! £50/yr at the moment!

Why don't they stop messing around. Make fuel duty a "Sensible" amount and put the road tax in as part of the fuel cost - i.e people who do most miles or run the gas guzzlers pay the price. easy

Re: Liberal Democrat's proposed new car tax bands

I would normally vote Liberal Democrats - but WTF are they thinking

As has been said - if they want to push up road taxes then they MUST improve public transport such that it becomes a viable option (where I live in Bristol busses are a complete joke - although there is no overall control the Liberal Democrats hold a majority in the council - I would have no faith in them if they ever did come to power)

So basically is there a viable, sensible government left?

I would not vote Labour or Lib Dems as it stands and the Conservatives can go **** off - time to vote for the Monster Raving Loony party then

Re: Liberal Democrat's proposed new car tax bands

Ditto.

I'll go for the reduction in my car tax on their plans - down from 115 to 100.

Tchyeah right, in their dreams, I'm not a big fan, leaning marginally to the right of Ghengis Khan - 1 policy does not a government make.

What we need is base fuel prices reduced and road tax added to the fuel costs and more toll roads preferably derestricted.

Re: Liberal Democrat's proposed new car tax bands

Car tax is a good way at the moment to check if the car is insured and mot ed ...but if a way could be found over that then tax on fuel may be a good thing (if you use the road the most you pay the most) it may come anyway or the car tax may just rise ......but I would be very surprised if the Libs got in power to be able to do it.....they can always prattle on about we will do this and that because they know they will never have to carry it through

Put it on fuel and foreign lorrys become even cheaper. Fill up a massive fuel tank in france and come on over with the goods, drive them there and go back. Even if you have to fill up once you are still making a massive saving on fuel costs.

So long as none of the other parties start thinking it is a good idea as well........think swmbo's car would become worthless overnight

Re: Liberal Democrat's proposed new car tax bands

It shows the joys of being in opposition ,rather than having to make policies that stand any chance of becoming law.Car drivers are easy pickings compared to large multi-nationals or airlines. All lib-dem MPs down this way-they should know how bad public transport is in some areas.

I'm with postmanpat's view on this, i.e. Quote: So long as none of the other parties start thinking it is a good idea as well Unquote It's certainly not unheard of for other parties to adopt policies which will put more money into tax coffers, and the Lib Dems are an easy one to steal from.

Also, as you say andyl, where will the tax £'s come from if cars are left at home? Loaded onto business travel = higher prices = +more VAT, or just an overall tax hike? We finish up paying it one way or another.

Just out of interest, a local garage today had a notice on a pump saying "We no longer sell LPG". Dunno why. I'll ask them when I have time. Anyone else seen that?

Regards
Mo

Re: Liberal Democrat's proposed new car tax bands

Small point but any increase like this is only proposed for new registrations, otherwise as pointed out above people are hit with big increases that they cannot afford. Also were 100,000's of cars ever to be dumped overnight and replaced with newly manufactured priuses (priuii?) the total energy and hence CO2 cost would be vastly greater than just allowing people to continue driving their old cars.

I like a lot of the lib dem policies but didn't vote for them last time, because of their (now defunct) local income tax policy. I'm all for redistributive and progressive taxation but fail to see why me and SWMBO (as professional DINKies) should suddenly pay 10x as much just to get our bin emptied.
