Re: Local Citizens with speed guns...

Fliiping do-gooders with nothing better to do with their time .
Round here there are drivers who deliberately speed up when going past these types and flicking the bird - Not that I'd condone such behaviour

I certainly wouldn't mind a speed gun to see how fast some of the neds "cruise" round our estate at night.

"The pair meet once or twice a week in the Eastbourne Road area during morning and evening rush hour when traffic is at its heaviest."

Surely it's the feckers who do 50 or more when the roads are clear that are the biggest hazard: pedestrians are unlikely to step into a line of moving traffic, but they might fail to spot a single car going too fast. Likewise, I bet the collision rate for continuous traffic is far less than when the roads are clear...

There are 'community speed check zone' signs up near where I work, but I doubt it makes any difference...

Befriend someone in your local council's traffic planning department. They have them as they have to do speed checks when considering raising or lowering a limit on a road and, in the past, the speed guns have been known to wander along to track day meets and even to test people's laser detectors

Can I just put a hi-viz jacket on, and stand at the side of my road with a hair-dryer?

So you can shoot yourself in the head for contemplating it?

Seriously these guns have enough variable as it is, never mind how some of these people use them. Stable, not I'll fire it in my arthritis ridden hands after bringing it up from my holster

Re: Local Citizens with speed guns...

Dunno what I think about this. On the one hand it's like a public demonstration that drivers are going too fast when residents clearly think it's not safe, and on the other hand, I doubt many offences have been "found good" once in adjudication.

Re: Local Citizens with speed guns...

I don't actually see the problem with it, its people actually trying to do something positive in their local community. If it makes people slow down and just take the roads nice and steady, then I'd like to see more.

Seen two people in Colwyn Bay last week doing the same. Got its good points if you are kicking the backside out of the speed limits. But to me just seems to be war on the motorist there are camera's everywhere you go. and not always for safety. a lot are thee to make money.

But these don't, they just serve as a reminder to people that there speed limits on our roads and they should be obeyed. No fines are given out, just letters of advice.

Out of interest, what evidence is required to receive one of these letters?

Yep, that's what the copper said when the main news ran a story on it. Expect a letter advising you on the speed you were seen doing, that's all. Not sure about persistant offenders though.

They are trained in the use of the gun, 1 person uses the gun and when it shows up a high speed, flags it to the other person, who writes down the reg and varying between council/force, other details such as colour, make, model of car to ensure accuracy.

The gun is checked regularly and is evidence enough. Not sure if they can print photos from the ones they have mind, maybe they can? You must remember that I've never personally used one (people don't tend to speed on rail lines for some odd reason), but have seen them in use by a police officer.

Re: Local Citizens with speed guns...

hmmmm, not trained police officers so goes against home office guidelines. probably not taught how to deal with errorous readings, side swiping and bounce effect and if someone pee's them off they get a letter to for a speed they didnt do.

I personally would laugh if i received a letter. words it and prove come to mind along with cloned number plate officer.

The gun won't be taking photos. Basically the evidence is down to 2 members of the public and what they report the gun as saying. The gun will store all the speeds recorded though and these can be downloaded to a pc, but not sure if there's any way to tie it up with the offences.....

Exactly. Even fully trained police suffer sideswipes. even 1mm in stravel of the gun could add 10's onto the final reading.

IIRC there was a news story on the BBC site about just such a case. Guy 'caught' was actually trialing a GPS speed system he helped develop for gov approval

Gun reading was in the 50's, GPS speed was 28'ish IIRC. Funily enough, the officer involved has retired so the CPS dropped the case

Many forces these days only use 'guns' if mounted on tripods and/or in vehicles (aimed dead on vehicle at fixed point) for this very reason!

Re: Local Citizens with speed guns...

What is a side swipe? It sounds like something you would get your passenger to do if you spotted one of these on the roadside

Re: Local Citizens with speed guns...

a side swipe (or better known as slip) is where an speed gun operator aims to near the back of an oncoming vehicle and suddenly moves it to the front adding lots of mph to the actual mph.
