M62 Police New Under Cover car

I cannot belive what I have seen this afternoon on the M62 At Halifax.
A green Mercedes Vito, **52 VYE With ladders on the roof and a front end that lit up like a blue flashing christmas tree and it even had a pop up display in the front windscreen that said police and arrows to pull over ??? And two traffic cops in the front..

Now that is properly wrong

******* just another way of fleecing the honest driver ....

I'm sorry but I disagree.
Using unmarked cars allows them to see the real dangerous drivers and deal with them.
I'd *much* rather have hordes of these than cameras who ignore the idiots tailgating , chatting on the phone , eating their breakfast , reading a newspaper etc etc.

If you are an "honest driver" how does this in any way cause you a problem?

Depends who they were trying to get really. But a Vito is an odd choice for traffic police.

Unmarked Vectras , Volvos , Octavias etc are all quite easy to spot.
Nobody pays any attention to a van

Sorry, what I meant was that they aren't the quickest vehicle on the road and so would struggle if a decent car (no not a Fabia) decided to make off. I think it was more likely either a carrier which has been tarted up, or an incident support van, the ladders do suggest the second idea.

I'd like to see a Vanquish or a Gallardo as an unmarked car. There's no way you would think it was a police car... now what would they reach downhill on the M62 I wonder ?

Don't the airport police at Gatwick have a Gallardo? I know they used to have a Diablo but I've heard they got rid of that a while back. I'm sure I read something in my local paper about it a bit back.

Due to the ANPR fitted to most of the cars these days they know who the car belongs to and if it's insured etc within 15 seconds. Then they'd call up a nippy motor to follow it.

Are you an honest driver then?

So your the one that keeps to the speed limits then!
Your the one that that don't run the lights on Amber!
Your the one that stops at zebra crossings!
Your the one that gives way to cars coming up hill!
The list is endless.

Your certainly a top man

In Belfast there's a Renault Kangoo prowling about complete with blue lights behind the grille and a couple of Honda bikes with video cameras in the panier bags. Very sneaky!

thought the Vito wasn't too sluggish for a Van really.....
Least it won't lunch it's gearbox like Renault Master's...lost a new one between Manchester n Carlisle.

Back on point though, won't be long before they're putting speed cameras in the bottom of wheely bins and ptting them by roadside on bin day..... the do it in IIRC Denmark already, the home of the tuff tuff club.....

An honest driver is your average joe trying to get from A to B, not the turds that:

Hog the middle and outside lanes

Don't indicate at roundabouts

Sit so far up your *** you cant see their headlights in the mirror

Dont say "thank you" in response to being flashed out etc

Don't use headlights in heavy rain/fog/spray on motorways or any road for that matter.

I can go on for hours but I dont want to turn this into another "things that annoy you" thread

Unmarked cars aren't interested in mr average who does 75 on the motorway, just the asswipes who are a danger to themselves and others.

I'm not sure what you mean by that , but am I bothered by the thought of the police in an unmarked car watching how I drive?

No , not at all.

It's only an offence if your rear wheels cross the white line after the lights turn red. Amber is fine.

Cheers

And of course its perfectly legal to go through an amber light if it's more dangerous to attempt to stop.

What happens if you move forward at a set of lights on red to allow an emergency vehicle through but get snapped by a camera?

Technically you have committed an offence though it would be very unlikely that you would be taken to court.

Hasn't happened to me but it's one of those things you think about in the traffic.

Thanks for the clarification

i really would love to know how the police work on speeding.. now oviously it is illegal to go over 70mph as that is the limit however good motorway, modern car perfectly safe and able to do 80-85mph how often they pull you for this, just that to me these days it seams a perfectly acceptable speed on a motorway.

The Association of Chief Police Officers guidelines suggest not taking action unless the speed exceeds the limit by more than 10% +2mph so for a motorway a true speed of 80 is where you are likely to attract attention. This is probably an indicated speed of around 87 mph.

This is partly an acceptance that 75 isn't really all that different to 70 , and partly that there are plenty of people doing well over the limit that TrafPol can spend all their time dealing with the worst offenders.

I would imagine it is mostly down to discretion, the tolerance is 10%+2 over the limit (I think) so 80 on the motorway wont normally attract attention, if you are doing 72 and driving erratically then you will get a tug which is how it should be, this is where the whole speed camera issue comes up, no discretion whatsoever.

And the speed limit is irrelevant if the conditions warrant a slower driving speed to remain safe.

oviously.. remember the rain we had back in august.... i was on M1 doing 40 like most people is was so damn heavy.. was like driving through a swimming pool..... shocked me that people were still shooting past doing unconceivable speeds.. they're the ones who need to be stopped in conditions like that
