Me too. First one lasted 7 years, while the second is still going strong after 29 years. I'm told it is something to do with finding the right person.

I got married last year in the Lake district, we had been together 6 years and have been through thick and thin together, including a long drawn out court battle to win custody of my daughter......was it the right thing to do? You bet, we are HAPPY and expecting our first child in February oh did I mention we are HAPPY!!

Co-habiting is the new thing apparently, and at the 'tender' age of 25 I think it is too...

The idea of the stress and expense both frightens and bores me.

Still some growing up to do me thinks...

oooooo... a cartoon on TV. Yipee

I have been married twice.

I have to say that when i got divorced i was never one of those people who said "never again"

"You can't tar them all with the same brush" was more of a philosophy of mine

I had a mad eight month spell during which i drank loads, had lots of one night stands and even went out with a few women as well.

Then i met my current wife. She is what i affectionatley like to call " a top bint"

We got married in October 2001 and have a son already who is two and a half, and she is overdue with our second child. (should be here on sunday though)

Since i met swmbo i have had the best times of my life and she is not just my wife, she is my best friend too.

Sorry if this has made anyone nauseous.

Been married just over 38 years now and still cannot fault it, yes we have our rows and once you realise that you will never be right it gets easy.
Get the right one and there is nothing better, my SWMBO has been a friend as well a wife.
Two kids now married and four grand children = Poverty at Christmas

We cohabited for 10 years before getting married, when i met my man i told him straight, i said i'm not into the marriage and kids thing and here we are been married for 2 years. it definetely wasnt the case that i've seen with some people that are great for years and then get married and it all goes wrong. i think i had a lot of growing up to do and living together made me a more mellow person until i felt ready for marriage, aswell as usual stuff like doing house up etc.

we are still the same people, i can never understand when people change after marriage, makes me sus about their reasons to in the first place. He is my best friend, loves me for who i am and i am happier than i have ever been now i am in my 30's.

It's interesting, isn't it? Pixi's post almost argues both points of view equally. If you love each other, why would you need marriage. On the other hand, if you love each other, what reason could there be NOT to get married.

Marriage is a commitment. If you aren't ready for the commitment, don't get married. Simple as that.

What saddens me is when people place more emphasis on the trappings of marriage - huge rings and a showy wedding, than they do on the simple ceremony and the vows of faithfulness that are the reason for being there in the first place. Likewise the "planned" engagements, that last for years, until they can "afford" to get married. Where does money come into it? I guess I'm just old-fashioned ...

Absolutely marriage.
can't stand thought of any children i might have being b******s in the true legsl sense.

seriously though.....
i nearly tied the knot three and a half years ago, but the "asking price", personally, not financially, was too high. i'd have lost everything.
but that level of connection to another person is something, if it happened again, i wouldn't even need to think about it. like mr lennon says:
"all you need is love"

nauseuos enough for you?

Surely not...

My theory on the cost of it is that you only do it once, therefore you want it to be as "perfect" as possible, which in turns costs a certain amount of money.
That said, I only spent about a 1/3rd of the national average on mine...and the two most expensive things were the "room hire and catering package" and the wedding dress (was worth it though ).
As we paid for it, we kept full control over events, which in itself reduced a lot of the stress, and I think probably the only thing we argued about was whether I could wear my Skoda cufflinks for the ceremony...

Yes, I do believe marriage is a good thing, but I don't think it's necessarily for everyone.

Rob.

Wot?

Need a licence to shack up and shag?

Who thinks they hold the authority to even suggest that we need their permission? Church and State? Authority must be earned, so no chance there then.

Living in sin for 20 years. Partner is best mate a well. Being married would not change anything, however it would cost a shedload of cash. Funny thing is I have owned a wedding car business and my better half does couture bridalwear.

I agree with a lot of this.

When i got married the first time it was the proper church do, white dress, the works. Still ended up divorced.

Second time myself and my wife decided we would do what we wanted not what everyone expected us to do. We got married in FLorida in the grounds of an old plantation style house, we wrote our own vows, stuff that meant something to us not just your generic rubbish. Then had a trip back to the hotel in a stretch limo supping champagne in the back. It was excellent. Went to one of the best restaurants in Florida in the evening to top off a fantastic day
