Unhappy Medical procedure tommorrow

I am off to the hostpital tommorrow for what is described as a minor procedure. It is called a urodynamic study. It is an investigation into how my bladder is working.

Apparently they fill your bladder up through a fine catheter and then measure the pressure inside it. Now i am somewhat apprehensive about it but i am also looking forward to getting some answers from this investigation.

Has anyone on here had any experience of this sort of thing?

Also if it is going to be painfull is there anyway i can take some pain killers or something prior to the precedure to lessen any pain i may feel during it????

Any advice is much appreciated.

Re: Medical procedure tommorrow

Not a similar op, but was recently in for another procedure, and although i was going to have the area numbed i was also very highly strung due to it, they popped me 4 yellow tablets(some kind of valium i believe) and the op was a beautiful dream, i couldnt care less what they were going to do to me, i felt ace.

So if you can get some of them, just tell them how anxious you are, then party on,

Good luck and try to relax

Re: Medical procedure tommorrow

If they mention the word uncomfortable I would go along with the advice above ....but again, tell them how nervous you are or how you feel and they will do something about it

Re: Medical procedure tommorrow

I can't see them giving me anything like that. I think after they fill up my bladder they want me to pee so it will be no good if i am out of it.

Re: Medical procedure tommorrow

Having a catheter inserted is a little uncomfortable. I know by both (one-time) personal and (many times) professional experience, but an anaesthetic gel is used during insertion.

Expect to feel like you're dying for a wee, but it shouldn't be actually painful as such.

Something like panadol would be ok, but some stronger painkillers like ibuprofen interfere with prostaglandins which are natural body chemicals that have an effect on smooth muscle contraction (like that in the bladder wall). Better not take something that might interfere with the results.

Cool Re: Medical procedure tommorrow

I had this done about 8 years ago,it's no problem really. No tablets or injections involved, just lie on the bed, they insert a small catheter,it's best to relax and take no notice of what they are doing ,they then pour measuring jug of special iced water in the catheter, into your bladder,i think they may have done an ultrasound scan to see how full you are, they measure how much water they've used then drain it out again through the catheter ,make sure you,re chilled out, lose any pride you've got and try and enjoy yourself

I wouldn't self-medicate before your procedure, but maybe you can ask for some kind of sedative to keep a smile on your face.

I had something like that when I had my wisdom teeth pulled out in addition to the local anaesthetic, because I am a big girl. I was totally baked, didn't have a clue what was going on and when I was walked back into the crowded waiting room I embarassed SWMBO by describing my condition in terms of various other 'medication' I have taken in the past . They had to hold the pen in my hand for me to sign the bill, then they hurried me out the door onto the street where I promptly slumped in a mumbling heap and stayed there for about 20 mins, SWMBO being unable to move me

In summary then if you have to be sensibly communicative during the procedure, or plan on doing anything else that day, then just grit your teeth and bear it .

Re: Medical procedure tommorrow

I am back from the hospital after having the urodynamic study done.

I must confess to being very nervous when i got there but the nurse was really good and explained everything and was very reassuring.

It did feel very very strange having something pushed down my japs eye all the way to my bladder. Stung a little but it was the thought of it that made me feel really ill. Thought i was going to flake out at one bit and the nurse said i had gone a funny colour

Any way its all over with now, i feel as if aliens have been experimenting on me

Thanks to all for your kind words

On the positive side - it's all over now, and probably you've gained an extra inch from all that pulling!

I wish

It is quite the opposite, everything goes into reverse when they are trying to stick something down there

I had circumcision done when i was about 4 so was more concerned with fighting my mum and her sisters as they tried to get one of those horrible hospital gowns on me prior to having it done.

Re: Medical procedure tommorrow

When I was at uni, a girl I had "more than just a kiss" with managed to catch something itchy and not very nice shortly afterwards. However, at the time we diddnt know this so off I went to the GUM clinic. Never felt something quite so painful as a little barbed instrument being inserted in there and slowly pulled back out again to take a sample!!

I was clean, the lad she dumped me for wasnt

b1tch.

I think this has changed somewhat because i had to have this done about 7 yrs ago when i was young free and single and it stung a bit but it was just a cotton swab type thing they used certainly not barbed. Unfortunatley i had got a dose of Chlamidia from some bint that i later found out had been a bit friendly with her cousin at the same time i was "seeing" her
