MOT Due.

If an MOT is due but you can't get it into the garage to be MOT'ed until after the due date, can you be prosecuted for driving without a valid MOT???
I know in the past, if you took your car in within a certain amount of time after the MOT due date, you could have it backdated but having asked at the garage, they said it can't be backdated, even by a day. Would anything happen to me for not having an MOT for one day or should i try to find somewhere else to get it looked at???

Yes, IIRC it's not endorsable but you can get a hefty fine for it.

You'd have to weigh up the penalties for getting caught against the the chance of getting caught, and see if you think it's worth the risk

Re: MOT Due.

I thought the old rule was you can drive it to an MOT station to have an MOT done, but you should make sure it is booked in before setting off for obvious reasons. Any other reason whilst driving without an MOT will get you nicked probably.

Re: MOT Due.

Cheers.
If the certificate says expires 09/09/08, do i take it that means at 23:59 on 09/09/08 or does it mean it won't even be valid that day??
If it expires at 23:59, i could just not use the car on the Wednesday until i take it to the garage. I know someone at work that only found out last week that the MOT expired in July and they never got caught.
Guaranteed i'll get caught though!!

Re: MOT Due.

You could be done for driving without insurance if you don't have a valid MOT.

You can only drive it to an MOT centre where you have a pre booked MOT.

Re: MOT Due.

From a previous post

http://briskoda.net/general-car-chat...1/#post1379407

Remember not to park it in the street if the MOT has expired and drive directly to the garage (don't even stop for a newspaper etc.) for the pre-booked test.

Yes, you're legally allowed to use your car without MOT if...
1. You're driving to a pre-booked MOT appointment.
2. You're driving to a garage to get repairs done as a result of a failed MOT test.
3. Something else I can't remember...

But the car needs to be roadworthy regardless of the MOT status.

Pretty sure the expiry date is the whole date, so you'll be covered on the 9th but not on the 10th...not an MOT tester though so this might be incorrect.

Re: MOT Due.

Thanks for the replies. The cars on a driveway overnight, so i'm going to try and arrange a lift into work on Wednesday, which could mean having to put someone out unfortunatley, especially with where i live.
I'll make sure i don't use it on Wednesday until i take it to my MOT test. I bet i get pulled on my way to the test, making me late!!!

Re: MOT Due.

Good luck with your MOT. I had mine done today and luckily only minor thingies.

Can I ask a question please?
From an MOT test, I used to receive a ticked checklist, but can't say I've received one for the last couple of years or so. I'm not a car person, as you'll know, so just wondered why the MOT garage used to give me one but don't seem to these days. Curiosity is all. Ta

Re: MOT Due.

It's all gone computerised, but IIRC you should get a print out of the pass or fail certificate.

Re: MOT Due.

Remember next time that you can take your car in upto 4 weeks before the current MOT runs out, and the new one will run out 12 months after the old one. So you could get upto 13 months on the new cert.

And a better idea if any parts required might take several days to arrive. Plus, if car isn't considered roadworthy according to the MOT standard, it never hurts to learn that sooner rather than later
