| Briskodian | Moving house...cat concern Don't really need the cat haters too spoil this thank you We are looking to move and have viewed a few properties.Favourite choice is sadly on a main road. Max our 5 yr old soft as a brush tabby has had the benefit of quiet cul de sac living for a while.Don't think he has 'avoid a fast car' . Stupidly we might have to pass on the whole idea unless you can train a cat to stay in the back gardens and don't go out the front?! I refuse not to look out for his interests.Any tips or reassurance or will a house purchase fall through due to a cat ![]() |

| Briskodian | Re: Moving house...cat concern If the cat can get outside you will never be able to train it not to wander off. As Ross suggests, how about keeping it as a house cat? But bear in min dit could live for another 10 years! Thats 10 years of watching for it escaping, mesh over open windows and not being able to open doors/windows wide in the summer. |

| Re: Moving house...cat concern Cats are pretty clever animals. You would probably need to keep him indoors for a little while so he could get used to the new surroundings. this way when he does goes out he's not going to panic as much. maybe let him out the back after this and keep an eye on him. Not always the easiest thing to do, but worth a try. Then wehn your happy let him come and go when he pleases. I am sure the noise of the traffic will put him off going out the front and if it doesnt I reckon he will realise that its not a gfood idea to go running in the road. |

| Re: Moving house...cat concern Simple: Main road = bad news for felines. If you want the pusscat/s to live on, I would seriously re-consider (and I would reject a house by a busy main road, even one 100 yards from a main road would be frowned upon)On the other hand, some cats just don't have road sense and seem to be killed/injured on the quiestest of roads.

| Re: Moving house...cat concern I moved 4 cats with me a couple of years ago. My house has a road out the front which isn't overly busy, but people still tank down it, and a garden with a quiet cul-de-sac behind. I was very nervous about letting them out the front so put the cat flap in the back door and they just go exploring that way. Having a few interesting things for them in the garden also seems to help attract them to it. If they do go out the front they tend to just sit in our front garden and watch the world go by ![]() On the other hand, my old house backed onto a busy main road and we encouraged them to stay out the front of the house and that seemed to work ![]() Chris

| Briskodian | Re: Moving house...cat concern When my parents had a new kitten she found herself on the other side of a not so busy road. I went over to bring her back over as she was looking rather lost. Stood at the roadside holding her, a car went past really close, the kitten scratched the hell out of my arms to try and escape but I held her there all the same. Poor thing was terrified and never went near the road after that. |

| Re: Moving house...cat concern I live at the end of a cul-de-sac but unfortunately back on to a fairly busy road. When I brought my 2 cats home from the rescue I made a point of keeping them in for 4 weeks so they got used to the house. In the last week or so I took them out for walks on a lead (don't ask). Then on the Saturday I let them loose. Didn't think anything of it until on Tuesday I woke up to find himself with a broken leg after meeting Mr Pirelli. 2 months and many sleepless nights later I reintroduced him to the outside world. He now has a much healthier regard for cars. I make a point of bringing them in at night so I know where they are and locking the catflap as at night is when they do most of their roaming. Hope this helps. PS. The Feliway diffuser is good as a de-stress device. |

| Re: Moving house...cat concern our family has owned quite a number of cats over a 30 year period , only 1 has died of old age , 2 were put to sleep due to various illnesses , but all the others , at least 5 poss 6 ,were killed on the road , 1 of them actually managed to get knocked down twice , we had 2 go in a matter of days , so my advice to you is try and by a house away from a road , although a busy road maybe better than a quiet road , a busy road should scare the cat away but a quiet road with occasional traffic the cat will think its OK to saunter across the road only to be hit by speeding motorist , cats and roads dont mix , Flatfourburble had a kitten run out in front of him in Germany on the Nurburgring trip , it proceeded to sit under his car with the owner trying to coax it out then it ran to other side of the road , gave the owner a fright anyway

| Briskodian | Re: Moving house...cat concern I had loads of cats whilst growing up and just about every one of them was killed by a car, so now I have 2 furry babies and they are indoor cats, we had a boy first and then decided to get him a girl kitten playmate for company and for exercise, they love each other and I don't have to worry about them getting killed |

it doesn't always work ![]() we have lived here a year now and one of ours got killed a couple months ago. our road is normally quiet but gets the occasional driver doing silly speeds and sadly the cat just wandered out into the road wondering what the noise was ![]()

| Re: Moving house...cat concern I've got 2 cats and live on a main road. I wasn't going to have cats because of the road but my brother had them as kittens and then got bored with them and pulled the old "if you don't have them they'll have to go to Cat rescue" routine. He'd always kept them indoors and I kept them inside as well. This was easy when I got them in December but more of a problem as spring and summer arrived and when I found one trying to climb out through the fanlight in my bedroom I decided to let them out. That was just over a year and they've been fine (touch wood), there's a cat flap to the back garden and they're not allowed to go out the front door. I've never seen them anywhere near the front of the house. I've lost cats to the road before and it's dreadful One was when I used to live on a quiet country road, so I don't think a busy road is any more dangerous than a quiet one.Not sure if this helps at all Loz ? Jec, they're beautiful cats you have I see yours thinks all the furniture is his as well !

| Briskodian | Re: Moving house...cat concern Thanks all.We will put an offer in. The house has a very nice garden that backs on to other gardens.Hopefully that will be more of an attractive playground than the road! |

| Re: Moving house...cat concern Like most of you lot i have had a few cats in my life and we have lived on a good mixture of busy and quiet roads. Two i have owned have been killed on the road but one was on a busy road and the other on a cul-de-sac so you never know what is going to happen to them.I guess cats are just like people....some are daft, some are smart arses ! My final survivor,a half blind Pursian still manages to miss cars on our quietish road and also on the busy road at my Mums when he goes on "holiday" when we sod off on our jollies......smart **** version me thinks ! |
