Wonder if the liberal, Chardonnay-swilling appeals judge would still hold the view that "They had not sought to kill, but this was a savage, cruel, brutal and vicious attack," if it had been one of his relatives that they'd attacked (repeatedly)?! Can't imagine the two scrotes concerned will ever contribute positively to society, so why should they even have the option of being considered for release? Yet again, the PC brigade have won over commonsense and portrayed the perpetrators as victims...

Might as well stick my two cents in. I do try to see both sides of things, so probably a bleeding heart liberal. However, even I think a taste of their own medicine might have been a better punishment. It wouldn't need to be carried out, just leave them in detention knowing it would happen but not knowing when... so that they'd experience the same fear that their victim apparently did.

What exactly is gonna change in three years when they are clearly that disturbed? The message to them must surely be that "They can't touch us and if we listen to some boring psychologist, we'll be out in no time and can do more of the same."

Exactly like the revelation the other week that the government considers drug users who have registered as wanting treatment at one time or another as 'users in treatment' regardless of whether they're actually receiving treatment at present. And then they get 'rewarded' with extra methadone in some cases if they do stay in rehab! At the risk of sounding corny, it's political correctness gone mad!

The best drug rehab is forced cold turkey with support until they are over the crap then give them some small rewards then to make the point that it was worth it.

Rewards could be a place on a job training scheme or something?

I find it a bit harsh to state that a 15 year old -even if he's was killer at the age of 14 if I've got the dates from the newspaper correct - never can be rehabilitated. With proper treatment this should be possible - and that would be cheaper for society than a life-time lock up in a meximum security prison among adults which definitely not would help him.

I agree with Mo that three years might not be enough. But that's a minimum sentence, correct, after which parole might be considered? Nothing saying that they'll be out in that time.

In Sweden a 14 year old committing a crime (any crime) cannot be put on trial in a criminal court - he (she) falls in the hands of the social services. If 15-18 maximum is four years in juvenile detention. If 18-21 juvenile detention or prison, the latter only for feral crimes (which indeed was the case in Warrington) or if there are reasons to suspect repeated crimes.

Oh yes. Many of them will commit new crimes. But I would like to see figures showing that the British model is more efficient. Relapsed criminals are not unheard of in the UK I guess? It seems as if what most people learn in prison is new ways to commit crimes. American research indicates that for juvenile delinquents shorter sentences give better prospects.

In the eye of the general public this is hard to accept. But to send young people to long prison terms that actually make them worse only to make us feel better is outright stupid.

And please, don't drag tha barbaric capital punishment into the discussion! It's barbaric in itself, and as long as we cannot have 110 % guarantees that no innocent person ever will be executed I cannot understand how anyone can suggest it.

My thought is just that they must be locked up for longer to keep the public safe. If they are that disturbed, I'd expect them to be put somewhere which accommodate those who cause harm for the sake of it (seemingly their repeated attacks were not for financial gain). Of course, the Jamie Bulger case is not long distant from our memories.

I don't know what happens to these people in our system; I guess they won't be put in with "hardened criminals", but surely they are already "hard" so I wonder what other prisoners could teach them on that score anyway.

I still seriously doubt that three years - in any place - will change their mindset.

i agree that a lengthy prison sentence ends up fairly costly, but i'm sure people would keep an eye on em for free whilst they dug their own graves...job done. it's not like this was a one off "heat of the moment" type of deal
