On a serious note, despite all the politics and overblown schmaltz that's become associated with 9/11, it was a horrific thing to happen to ordinary folk just going about their daily business. And the people who lost their lives trying to save others, and those that went out of their way to try and save others really restored my faith in human nature.

And the reason why we should never forget is the same reason why we shouldn't forget The Holocaust, or Rwanda, or cambodia, or The gulags, or any other situation where one twisted group of fanatics set out to murder people for no good reason.

I know it will, I was thinking about the futility of it all when I posted. And I know there are more pressing matters to worry about, but these people need some sort of recognition IMO.

I can't ever forget, as it's our wedding anniversary! 26 years today.

I was actually on an aeroplane myself when it was going on, flying back from holiday in Majorca. I didn't find out until the woman next to me in the baggage queue at Luton was getting very tearful trying to ring her friend in New York.
I'll never forget seeing the pictures for the first time.

Nasty but as usual the reaction doesn't match the risk

2,752 deaths on 9/11 due to the terrorists.
43,354 road deaths in the USA (2001-2002 figures)
28,663 firearms deaths.

And the deaths from the latter two causes continue every year.
Deaths from terrorism since 2001. Just about 0. But it still is used as an excuse for everything from data mining to ID cards.

They might continue every year but I don't think you can compare the situations. Road deaths are usually accidents. Also individuals causing death by shooting each other isn't the same thing as a minority causing hundreds/thousands of deaths in a single blow.

The people in the planes and the towers weren't to be aware of the risk of what happened where they? I think the emotional reaction to that day is quite reasonable!

To everyone and anyone affected by 9/11, I offer my heartfelt condolences. To all those who risked their own lives saving others that day I offer my heartfelt thanks and deep respect.

But to all those other Americans who either helped fund the IRA's struggle, or stood by and let them continue raising funds while we found ourselves wondering if it was safe to go Christmas shopping, I say welcome to our world.
