Re: Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. Anyone using a.........

Hi ag. Not long after I joined Briskoda, I mentioned this, sleep apnoea, as a possible thing to consider re a thread. Huck (Brisky co-founder) was around then. If he's still around, he might be able to help

I can only offer a hug knowing what it is. I suppose I could offer to throw balls of knitting wool at you, but then you'd just throw them back and ask why the wool wasn't on needles by now... Seriously though, I don't have day-to-day knowledge but hopefully others will (I know Huck does).

Regards
Mo

Is it mild enough that the DVLA are happy?

can't remember exactly but it's something to do with your breathing stopping for short periods whilst you're asleep; so it shouldn't affect your ability to drive. What's the "obstructive" bit?

just looked it up. Snoring, but so severe that it stops you breathing and wakes you up. Suppose in that case it could be a concern for DVLA becuase the sufferer could suffer from extreme fatigue if sleep is disturbed enough.

What brings it on ag??

Lorry drivers that stack it are often found to suffer.

There's a well known case on the M40 where the driver drove over the car killing all on board. He was found to suffer it.

Cant find that one, but found one I got caught up in (just joined M20 as the road was closed). Took 6 hours to get from M25 to the first junction.

Re: Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. Anyone using a.........

Mate, I am really sorry to hear this. One of the lads who works for me has it. He sleeps with a mask (CPAP), but he is clearly suffering to the point he may not be able to continue working in his current role.

He says the mask does help a lot because he can sleep for reasonable periods of time allowing him to enter into a different, deeper sleep state (REM sleep) which we all need to achieve for certain amount of time during the night. It's where we really recharge our batteries. Not having this every night will reduce your concentration levels, dexterity, awareness etc so I can see whay it would be an issue for driving. It also take a bit of commitment from the other half as it can disrupt their sleep too

I don't envy him. I love my sleep and would be devistated if something (Other than a 1 year old) disrupted it (He says typing this at 1.15am...)

Check out this, it seems quite comprehensive

Re: Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. Anyone using a.........

My father in law suffers from this and he got what I assume is one of these machines and it made a huge difference to him. Takes a while before you really notice the difference but that is because you are completely knackered from not having slept properly for what could be years. After having it for a few months he is completely different and his golf game improved.

He used to come home from work and then spend most of the afternoon and evening falling asleep. Hearing someone with sleep apnea can be quite scary because they keep stopping breathing for what can seem like ages. My mother in law said she used lie awake at night wondering if he was going to keep breathing.

The machine makes some noise but nowhere near as much as his snoring.

Sometime when he goes away for a night or two he doesn't bother taking the machine with him and then has crap sleep and regrets not taking it.

Re: Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. Anyone using a.........

Oh, feel so sorry for you.
My mum (as well as her falling to bits) has this, before she was always so tired from not sleeping properly, and my god the snoring, she'd keep every one up with it. i to this day have never heard any one that loud, (apparently im a dam good snorer but i cant hear myself, unless i snore and wake my self up) she went back and forth to the docs about it, explaining that she was struggling too breath at times and was told it was because she was to fat. mum didnt accept this and finally got refered too a sleep clinic, and they were disgusted that mum had been fobbed off for so long, as she was so bad, they fitted her for what she calls her darth vader mask, now at nights she sleeps mostly through does not wake up so much, and better still does not snore.
she had to notifi the dvla, but they were happy for her too keep her lic, in some cases though it is so bad that the dvla have no choice, but to revoke a lic.
so hopefully with your mask, your now feel better and sleep much better. so good luck with that. hope its as good for you as it is for my mum!!

Re: Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. Anyone using a.........

My dad uses a CPAP machine. When he first got it he had problems with a dry mouth/throat. After mentioning this to the doctor the machine was changed (or upgraded?) to one with a water tank which keeps the air moist... I don't know if these are now standard but it might be worth checking.

The difference to my dad was amazing, he has been much more lively since getting the CPAP and he said he got used to wearing the mask very quickly.

Good luck with it, I hope you find it works for you.
