| Ok, camping, what do i need/recommend? Ive been putting off camping for the past few years, but am now thinking of doing it this year. So what do i need (yes i know i need a tent for starters), but what do members here recommend i get for me swmbo and minitext as i thought any old tent and sleeping bag will do but now see that its a bit more than just that. |

| Re: Ok, camping, what do i need/recommend? Good tent pegs. Pay about £10-£15 pounds for some. If you have hard ground then these will be great! Stove, gas and regulator. And most importantly plenty of beer/wine and a good sense of humour!! Have fun |

| Re: Ok, camping, what do i need/recommend? Windbreakers to make yourself an area around your tent Disposable bbq Kettle Fold up chairs with a hole in the arm for beer A battery operated light/torch Some string to make a line for hanging up wet clothes Disposable cups and stuff if you dont fancy doing loads of washing up (who does?) We take a couple of duvets (one for underneath) and pillows rather than sleeping bags. I can't think of anything else at the moment, but I'm sure the list is endless.

| Re: Ok, camping, what do i need/recommend? lol... my sentiments exactly...... alcohol, and disposable BBQ's and a close by supermarket and you can't go wrong ![]() in all seriousness though... a decent tent, buy a crappy tent and of the weather goes bad you'll suffer... as some briskodians know, me and swmbo killed two tents last year , we've just bought a new one (paid about £170) and its a big good quality one, two big bedrooms, one for us and one for HC, and with a nice big porch that we can sit in and cook/drink even if its raining

| Re: Ok, camping, what do i need/recommend? Other things: - plenty of warm clothes (it can get quite chilly at night, even in summer) - cards / board games etc. - good light source, flourescent tube based or something like that. I would not reccomend gas lanterns inside a tent though, although they are fantastic outside.

| Re: Ok, camping, what do i need/recommend? Water carrier, saves trip to tap for every kettle full. When selecting your tent consider what type of camping (duration/ frequency) you are planning on, large dome tent = loads of room but more likely to collapse/ blow away/ leak in severe weather unless you pay top $, and will need re-proofing. Canvas ridge tent, will last for years, any weather but might cost more and less space. Electric light = loads of batteries, good gaz lantern or parafin (NOT PETROL) Tilly lamp for outside (also kills bugs and provides heat ![]() Earplugs are usefull if you are camping within a country mile of Gilly, Grumpy or Sharky ![]()

| Briskodian | Re: Ok, camping, what do i need/recommend? What you need depends on where you are going and the time of year ! Without stating the bleeding obvious, if you're going to anywhere in the UK, you won't get a fortnight's uninterrupted sun, so take some water proofs, cargo trousers and fleeces - last years summer rain made UK infeasible - one site owner in Wales I contacted advised not to bother last year as they where washed-out. If you're prepared to take the risk, you might get some good deals in the UK this year. In western europe you just have to guard against chilly evenings - No Gulf stream to moderate the climate - so a wooly or fleece is advisable. On the continent there are numerous large camps 3 -star and above, specially on the coast. They can have leccy and water, occasionally drainage to each pitch, communal showers and toilet blocks with individual cubicles, clothes and crockery washing facilties, pools, waterslides, during "The season" well-stocked camp shops (Mini -supermarkets really) with bars, hot meals and evening entertainment - its not really camping ! 3 and 4 star camps in France were charging last year anything between E15 -E35 per night for a tent, two up and a car and leccy. Municipal camps, 2 star and below, more basic but your probably pay E10 a night, with no leccy. You might find the reception at the municipal camps less hospitable, as the indigeneous population tend to regard these as their territory. It is entirely up to you whether you lash out on kit. Best thing is to contact the place you're going to and ask them what's available on site and locally. On the better appointed sites, a tent from Argos, inflatible air bed, lightweight sleeping bags, water carrier, windbreak, parasol and a torch and some plastic picnic crockery and cutlery from one of the supermarkets may be sufficient. If you go to one of the less well equipped camps or your budget can't stand eating out every night, a camping gas stove (I'd go for a two burner and a 10 kg bottle) and a leccy coolbox, collapsible table and chairs, if you want to go mad. If you do go abroad with a tent you may find that the 3 and 4 star camps have less facility for this now as most of the pitches on these have gone over to pre-erected chalets or semi-rigid tents, and these are somewhat more expensive to rent than a straight foward pitch. In the UK, these sort of well appointed and organised facilities are fewer in number - but when you do come across them they are really excellent, but you'll pay £20 a night ! Last year I went to SW France, last two weeks in September (After the French have gone home !) to a small 3 star coastal camp, under a 100 pitches. Daily temp averaged 23-25C (Max 30C), night 10C, rained lightly once for an hour. Took some food, but no need as 2 x supermarket, as good as a London Suburban job (And a bloody sight cheaper) within 5 minutes drive. Filled up the motor at the remote self-service supermarche petrol station - very inexpensive. I took the lot with me, because I couldn't determine completely what the facilities were at the other end when I made the booking over the interweb. Really, I needn'y have bothered to take a third of the stuff I did. To make kipping in the car a feasible option (You might have to do so if you're doing the long drive ) get a roof box, so at least you have the room wind down the seats. A GPS unit helps if you get lost ! You can take out insurance to cover almost everything - cancelled reservation, loss of camping kit, european car recovery. Nick,

| Briskodian | Re: Ok, camping, what do i need/recommend? Forgot to mention. Even with modern tents with a built-in ground sheet its worth getting a separate groundsheet to stick underneath your tent pitch - this is v. useful on a number of counts -if it rains, it stops the rain pooling around the tent, its can protect the grass on lawned pitches, on sandy ones it stops a "Wallow" being created on the most used parts of the pitch and on stoney pitches it stops the tents own groundsheet being perforated. Halfrauds did do a very good eco groundsheet, coloured green. This was plastic (Polypropylene ?) but was loose woven and so had perforations allowing the ground underneath to breath and water to pass through without pooling and inundating the pitch - I know some UK site owners insist on the use of these for tents on lawned pitches. You may consider taking some plastic duckboards, like the gardeners use, a bucket, floor cloth dust pan and brush, if its going to be wet, sandy or dusty - the French would do that as SOP, but UK more hardy types might say that's OTT ! Don't forget a mallet (I use my car maintenance drift) for the tent pegs, some pitches can be absolute m*res - I've known people take training weights, rotray airer bases to secure the odd guy-rope when the gr |
