Possible health issue? Serious?

Now, I'm not one to think "I'm going to die" - I have a very optimistic look on life, but something on Sunday made me wonder....

A little background. It was the annual local pram race that myself and some others have (now) won 7 years on the trot. I had to stay sober due to driving to Bristol (which didn't help to be honest ).....

So, the race kicks off. Now, I'd drank approx half a litre of Tesco kick stuff - basically a cheap red bull. This could have helped to what happened. Basically I jogged about half a mile OK, but suddenly a massive pain shot through the left side of my head and behind my left eye. It was so bad I had to slow to a walk (even though not that knackered) and basically shut my eyes and massage my temples/head to alleviiate it a bit. It hurt so much and came on so fast - I did wonder whether it was some form of anneurism, etc - No loss of muscle use, paralysis - just excrutiating pain. This subsided eventually, and I was able to continue to win the race.

To help with a better prognosis once in Bristol, I had very sudden cold symptoms, and now I'm nursing a rather snotty cold / cough. No return of headache though. Oh, and I had also been drinking the night before the race so had a slight hangover as well.

Any thoughts. I'm sure I'm perfectly healthy, but the drugs within the "kick" drink and a combo of hangover, onsetting cold bug might have done something.

Re: Possible health issue? Serious?

Sounds like a migraine attack - an aneurysm would cause a fixed dilated pupil on one side. Pain would have increased until you lost consciousness and worse....
Sinus block is another possibility..
Having a cold coming on would have made this more likely.
Nowt to worry about mate....

Re: Possible health issue? Serious?

Never had a migraine before. The only time I've had similar headaches is when hungover, or having done too much with my eyes - such as watching TV for 8 hours [harks back to uni]

I'm not too worried, but having hever had a headache come on so fast, it did make me think. I'm off to the post office in a second might drop into a chemist as well for something to alleviate the snots.

Re: Possible health issue? Serious?

Can't see myself how a caffeine/additives drink would cause a sudden shooting pain on one side of head. I'd have a word with your doc as if you were engaged in exercise, it might be something to do with referred pain. Strange to me that massaging your temples seemed to help, but I know nothing so feel free to ignore.

Might never find out and hopefully it won't happen again

Best
Mo

Re: Possible health issue? Serious?

Migraine is caused by a reflex spasm and then redilatation of the blood vessels at the base of the skull.
Many trigger factors contribute to it - even without a tendency towards it the factors mentioned - unilaterality, lack of sleep, cold, caffeine intake, sudden hard excercise- point towards it.
No dilated pupil on one side - wouldnt worry about it tbh...

Re: Possible health issue? Serious?

Also could be eye related.

If you havent had one recently, get an eye test. I was getting similar, increasing in frequency. Had CT scans and loads of tests.

Finally had an eye test, and learned I needed glasses for driving, computer etc.

Re: Possible health issue? Serious?

caffeine is one of the potential triggers for migraine attacks.

Energy drinks are generally very high in caffeine.

Could be related!

Also, migraine triggers can be up to 48 hours prior to the attack itself - any potential causes in the 48 hours preceeding the attack?

I used to suffer from migraines every 6 months or so, very debilitating.

They then increased in frequency until they were 1, sometimes 2 a month and were affecting my work.

I now have them under control by taking low dosage of amatriptyline at night - an anti-depressant which has a side effect of migraine suppressant!

Back to one every 3-4 months now.

Different people get different symptoms with migraines, some get sparkly/flashing lights beforehand (Aura) some feel nauseous, etc, etc.

Re: Possible health issue? Serious?

I get very occasional intense pain just as you describe. Not sure on the cause, I have put it down to eye strain. Perhaps a trip to your opticians is in order?

Re: Possible health issue? Serious?

Optician has been visited recently and I have new driving glasses. Don't believe it was anything to do with my eyesight though - Think I'll ease off the stuff - Only ever really used it to keep awake on long journeys but thought some might give me a "kick" around the race! It did.... in the head.

The cold is starting to diminish now - bit snotty but my lungs are freeing up. Actually have a bottle of "kick" in college, but it's minus the label and full of water from the cooler.

At the risk of sounding like "Dad", I'd be going to the docs regardless to get it checked out, rather than relying on the opinions of a bunch of internet people. I'd rather waste the doctor's time and be given a clean bill of health than find out 3 years down the line I had something which could have been fixed if I'd let them know about it when it first happened......

Chris does have a point here - if it recurs do see someone about it....
I think that there were some helpful suggestions made by several people in this thread - and I do happen to be a doctor btw...

Re: Possible health issue? Serious?

I agree with the migraine theory. I got my first 1 a couple of years back. Felt like i'd been stabbed in the head. Was in the car making a right turn at the time too. Was closely followed by severe nausea. I felt like I was dying. I now know better obviously. lol
