In the new the other day -

A girl is to become Britain's youngest mother after becoming pregnant at 11.
The girl smokes 20 cigarettes a day despite being eight months' pregnant. She conceived aged 11 when she lost her virginity to a boy of 15 on a drunken night out with friends.

The 15-year-old has since been charged with rape by police, and is due to appear again at Edinburgh sheriff court on July 10.

How can society curb youth pregnancy?

Her 34-year-old mother, who gave birth to her youngest child eight months ago, said she was 'proud' of her daughter.

She will be 12 years and 8 months when she has the child next month. Jenny Teague, Britain's youngest mother until now, was a month older when she gave birth in 1997.

The youngster, who lives near Edinburgh, says looking after her younger brothers has prepared her for motherhood.

But the girl admits she "panics and cries" when babies are unwell and does not feel able to bathe them.

The mother-to-be, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had unprotected sex with the teenage boy, who also cannot be identified, while drunk last August.

'Excited'

She told the Sun: "I didn't think I'd get pregnant because it was my first time. But I'm really excited and looking forward to being a mum.

"I can't wait to take the baby swimming and out for walks in the pram. I think I'll be able to cope as I've had lots of practice looking after my brothers.

"I know how to feed a baby its bottle and I can change nappies. But I panic and cry if they're sick and I don't like giving them a bath because I'm a bit frightened.

"It's good to know I'll have my mum here to help me if I need her."

Concerned she might be pregnant, the girl visited a GP three times but tests proved negative. She learned the truth after buying a home-testing kit from a supermarket.

After the device displayed two blue lines, indicating she was pregnant, she pleaded with a female relative to break the news to her mother. The girl, who has been suspended from her first year of secondary school for fighting, said: "I was paranoid about what my mum was going to say and just frightened about being pregnant too.

"I knew straight away that I couldn't have an abortion because that's something I don't believe in.

"I was upset and so was my mum, especially as she'd just had my wee brother. We had a big argument and I ended up locking myself in my room and running away to a friend's.

"It was really hard but it's brought me and my mum closer, which is good. I knew my mum would stand by me no matter what, but I told her straight away I was going to keep the baby.

"The social worker suggested I got rid of it but I'd never do that."

Smoking at nine

The girl, who has shoulder-length dark hair, began smoking at nine and started drinking tonic wine and vodka cocktails at ten. She claimed her cigarette habit was not harming the health of her unborn child.

She said: "I can give up smoking at any time, but I don't find it affects my pregnancy."

The girl, whose parents split up several years ago, said she would like a baby boy - and may call him Leo.

She is currently being educated at a local community centre but knows she must return to school.

She told the Sun: "My mum has said she will look after the baby so I can go to school. I don't know what I want to do with my life when I leave. I used to want to be a nursery nurse, but now I'm not so sure."

'Proud of my daughter'

Her mum said: "I'm not ashamed of my daughter at all - in fact, I'm proud of her for keeping the baby.

"I know she's worried what other people will say but she can walk out there with her head held high.

"At first I wasn't too happy about becoming a gran. But now I'm used to the idea. I'm really looking forward to having another baby in the house."

The Scottish Conservatives has called for society and families to unite to change attitudes towards sex following the news.

This is going to cause the govenment to pour loads of money and though into 'better sex education in schools.' I was wondering how you all thought the best way to avoid young girls getting pregnant.

I was taught at school the best way to aviod STIs and babies was absitance. Of the 17 girls in my year 1 has had a baby and approximatly 15 plan B pills been taken.

Does anyone have a theory on how to end this problem

Tough one that.
Better education by the Parents as well as the Schools is vital to make youngsters aware of the dangers for themselves and others in their actions.
Most of the time you'll find the Parents of these very young Mothers are from quite deprived backgrounds and they themselves had little or no education.
Hopefully the child is well and has more common sense than it's Mother when she gets older.

no offence but what a stupid little scummer slag and her mother deserves to be put in prison for letting her daughter be like that and not slapping from one side of scotland to the other when she found out.

Hopefully appropriate measures will be put in place to protect the 11 year old and the baby when it's born. Not sure whether it would lead to actual child protection procedures to be put into place, but something needs to be done. She is only a baby herself

Yep you can see it all now. She’ll take hundreds of thousands of pounds in benefits whilst bringing the child up and being unable to work as she has the education of a cactus. I'm afraid it's just the world we live in, and Britain is a thirld world country in a lot of ways. It just seems to be the 'Honest Joe' that picks up the tab.

the girl shouldn't be allowed to keep the baby by law, she isn't legally old enough to even look after a baby let alone have one FFS.young baby should be put with a deserving foster family that can't have a child of their own for whatever reason so that it will actually get a chance at a decent life, the girl herself put into care/juvy and as i said earlier the mother put in prison for serious neglect and why can't the mother be held responsible her for daughters actions like the drinking/smoking/under age sex etc etc like they do in schools.

what a waste of good air these people are

how come only the guys get done? it wasnt rape, it was them getting drunk and having sex, therefore the girl is at fault as much as the boy.

the way the sexist law is laid out i'm affraid. despite them saying that girls mature quicker than boys the boys still get the blame for this and call it statory rape even if it isn't actually rape as both consented its technically rape under our rediculous laws.

i expect many in power including police have seen the girl smoking but are unable to actually do anything thanks to nanny state rules and regulations that govern them.

and she got kicked out of school for fighting. lovely girl.

im waiting to see a picture of her. i have a made up pic in my mind based on differnet things about her. i would like to know how accurate it is. and i dont see why it should be only the boy who gets penilised (not sure if its spelt correctly!) but i think the girl should be as well.

As we as a country slip into a trade decline, as all the services that could be provided "remote" from other countries are imported and all manufacturing ceases, there will be a problem employing enough of the population. The grand plan appears to be to create a cheap labour underclass to provide staffing for all the service industries that cannot be provided "remote" and these people will provide the cheap labour and economic turnover inthe future.

Unfortunately, these underclass folk are not going to behave in the way we would like, but hey, we will put up with it as long as some poor **** is there to do all the ****** jobs that we wont touch and and dont want to pay a living wage to have done, as long as they dont live near us.

Result is that the country will slide down the pan. It is well below the rim and heading south already. What can we do to address the situation? No idea. Many people have lost all respect for themselves and for authority. Education? Could work if early and accurate enough. The lad being punished, well I think that at 15 years old, he knew the difference between right and wrong and knew that porking an 11 year old was not right. The mother, prosecute for neglect. For the girl? Remove the child for adoption, punish her for consent to underage sex. Main thing to do is change the law and benefits system as many of these girls see pregnancy as the route to a flat from the council and a life of benefits.

On the other hand, look at it from the youth side. SEX SEX SEX is forced on young girls by the media from the day they can read. The magazines and advertising imagery is relentless. I saw a girl in Brentwood yesterday who was out with mum and sister, not poor judging by the new 5 series they were getting into. The youngest, about 11 or 12 was dressed in boots, skirt and top that a prossie would wear on a working night. What is the mother thinking?

Perhaps it should be illegal for te media to sexualise young people from such an early age. While they are at it, perhaps they could reconsider the take on the portrayal of violence and many other areas where child behaviour is being influenced at the critically formative stages of their lives.

I am seriously considering a move to somewhere else in the coming years.
