Re: Results Day!!

Is that up again?

No stiring, just want to know as if it keeps going up I think the papers should be adjusted.

Much like degrees, only a certain percentage of people are given the upper classes of degree, and i feel that this makes the grades worth while.

The reason I say this is I had a brief look around the uni sites and notices just how many places want the points equivilents of all A for courses that used to be BCC when i was looking.

So as a genuine question, if everyone has 3 A grades how do you discriminate, which is after all the whole point of the qualifications.

We shall be off to get my son's results at 11.00.

When all has gone well, he will be off to Birmingham Uni reading Political Science and Russian.

Be back later to spill all.

You sound like my parents.. lol

Yes but remember a pass is classed as Grade E or above.

They ratio how many people get A's, B's, C's and so on. If everyone got 90%, then a A Grade would be 99%, a B like 97% and a D around 92% etc..

Hope that helps, but the attitude everyone gets 3 A's really ****es me off (inc. what my parents say) as i worked bloody hard this year and i could only wish for that.

Re: Results Day!!

Moving on..

As posted in another thread about the working world, im not going to uni just yet but i had apply'd and been accepted to Cardiff Uni to study Enviromental Geoscience.

I got good enough grades to get me in should i wish to go, this year or next so im happy. However there were a few tears from some of my friends who are very bright and had very high expectations, but didn't quite make the cut.

Finally a congratulations to my friend Ruth, she works so hard all year and it pulled off with 5 A's. Now that _is_ hard to get. Especially with 100% in the hardest Geography paper our teachers had ever seen.

Best wishes to your son Delcac! Hope all goes well.

CHill mate, not saying that is case, it's just the impression i got. My tutor at uni was an admissions tutor and said they had problems as they were already asking for all A grades for the subject and were going to have to do some internal test now.

I'm sure you can see why a 90% grade A would be very poor for the overall value of an exam.

On a brighter note, hope you manage to do what you want with your grades

Re: Results Day!!

But good exam grades dont always reflect a bright pupil. These days, with so much pressure to pass the exams, it is possible to learn how to pass the exam without a full understanding of the subject. A bit like passing your driving test.

If they make the exams harder, pupils will be taught how to do th ehard stuff without the easier stuff.

I could learn how to play the piano, given enough time and practice but I could do it without undertanding music theory or reading music. Does that make me a musician? I think not.

I'm not so sure this is true - a friend of mine did a subject where there were no first's awarded at all and you'd expect at least one in a year of 250 students! Either way, I tend to agree that the exams are getting easier and our exams were certainly easier than the A-level courses 5 years earlier. Last time I checked the course I did at Uni, they were asking for AAB rather than the BCC which was commonplace when I applied. Wonder what Oxbridge are asking for now

I guess the knock on effect of everyone getting degrees is they are now the benchmark for employers and you have to really stand out from the crowd to stand a chance!

I can't believe it was nine years ago I finished mine.

Good results Des. Don't kids with those kind of results often get newspaper / TV interviews, or some kind of "prize" ??

Not wishing to brag but I'm going to anyway.

He's been in the local paper pictured with the mayor at a prize giving. He has also entered a few news paper competitions. One in particular where they gave you a 4 digit number and you had to construct a sum with the number as the answer. The news paper bods had to work out the bit in between, unfortunately they couldn't.

He is only 17 so he's managed all this a year in advance.

Des, eldest Miss K is starting A level maths in this coming year, he would'nt like to give her pointers (not like that..) as she is a bit bemused by what she has seen so far. (she wants to do maths, business studies, history, government and politics, and has to do general studies and critical thinking as well)

Re: Results Day!!

Results days - gosh it takes me back!

This time 2 years ago I was crying myself to sleep after getting my AS Level results - two D in General Studies and Religious Studies and 2 Ungradeable in Biology and Philosophy.

I wrote this email to one of my teachers at college to ask what best I do:

Sorry to be email you again, the last thing you proberly want to hear
from if a student but I have to talk to someone.

I just recieved through the post my results and they are far from good.
I really can not bring myself to type what they were, and I cannot see
my philosophy result. But what I can say is there is no way I can come
back to college now.

I am feeling absolutely horrible at the moment for so many diffrent
reasons. I am all by myself, and have been for 3 days as mum in in
austria with pete the one armed american. I nearly wrote of my driving
insturutors car. One of my favourite cows has been put down because
she broke her jaw. I am moving out of my house in less than 2 weeks.
I could go on. I do not want to sound whiny but I have no one to
contact at the moment who would care. My dad still thinks I am going to
med school, which is absolutly laughable now.

Mum is putting pressure on me to move to America with her and pete
which until now I have always said I would not consider it. But now I am not
so sure.

I did enjoy last year at college and I wish I could have mroe to show
for it. I do not an inhertantly bad pupil, which my results suggest
but what it comes down to is my results, so that does not matter.

The irony is after all the stories of a level results rising so
dramaticallly, I did not honestly feel I did badly in those exams.
Maybe I could have revised more, spent less time up to up to my
eyebrows in cow **** milking I would be feeling better now.

A friend from St. Dunstan's is coming to see me today. She has already
passed her driving test, she got As in all her subjects. She does not
even have a morgage on her house.

Again sorry to contact you

Emily X

2 years on, 5 jobs later and nothing on the horizon at the moment. What can I say??

KIDS - QUITTING COLLEGE TO MILK COWS IS A STUPID THING TO DO!
