| sleeping patterns...... my sleeping used to be a solid 8 hours, like a log. nothing could wake me, aside from a direct nudging in the ribs, that sort of thing. those days are gone it seems. erratic & disturbed sleep seems to be my "norm" now, being luck to get 6 hours of broken sleep. still, i'm fairly functioning. yet all i want to do is sleep. i'm usually in bed by 9 or earlier these days. wondered if this is some sort of response to grieving. i'd ask counsellor, but as i've not found one/been assigned one yet.....(no one at the local Cruse centre, just a recording till monday).... ![]() |

| I too am used to being an 8 hour a night kind of guy whos wake up call was next door neighbour banging on my front door because my alarm has woken him up but not me! I tend to be really restless in the evenings now, often not falling asleep for 2 or 3 hours, and I really don't know why. ![]()

| I have a fair bit of caffeine in the morning (coffee) - I force myself not to have any after midday. Seems to at least allow me to sleep. If it is one of those very, very long days (10+ hours working) I sometimes have a can of coke to boost me up a little, but I really do try to avoid it ![]()

| Briskodian | FWIW Apparently we sleep by "catching a train" in two hour slots. The Chinese relate this to the fact that they believe that the body does its stuff over night in sequence, i.e. stomach, kidneys etc. Thus if you miss the train at 10 pm, it will be 12 pm before the next time slot, timed of course to your body's rhythms. Again FWIW I wake up about every two hours and have since sproglet required feeding, so drift in an out, but for me that's no bad thing since it nicely interrupts any bad dreams I'm having. Then again, a "sink into" pillow (or two) is probably the best investment, with a warm flannalette pillowcase, whether feather other. Also having the radio on, low enough to hear well enough to listen and take your mind away from your circling thoughts, but not loud enough to hear properly (if you see what I mean). Also, the radio bridges the gap between the standard of noise level your brain is used to during the day, as against total silence at night. Also, if you keep thinking that you need to remember something in the morning, reach out and turn your slipper upside down. Doesn't tell you what, but easier than switching the light on for pen and paper jobby. Just my thoughts. Best regards Mo |

| I find it hard to get a sleep pattern, but thats because I work nights and then at the weekend I have to suddenly adjust to 'normal' peoples sleeping hours. It leaves me tired on a saturday evening (I finish for the weekend at 7am), so can't go out even if I wanted. And then I sleep badly, so eventually wake up at 1pm on sunday. Then I'd be ok for sunday night but have to stay awake monday night for work. It then takes a couple of days to get back into the swing. Plans are afoot though which means I should be doing something very worthwhile on friday and saturday nights.

| I know it doesn't help but: Have you ever thought of working shifts? If you are going to be awake during the night, you could atleast be getting paid! My favourite shift out of 0600-1400, 1400-2200 and 2200-0600 is the last one. I dont use an alarm clock all week!

| Phil, what do you do sleep wise at weekends though? That does mess things up for me and it'd be nice to hear if you have a good idea I can try.

| Moose, I agree its difficult at weekends. Our nights week runs sunday night to friday morning, finish at 4am. I usually get up around 10:30-11:00am, then try and get into a normal pattern of bed before midnight, unless having a night out! I also work a lot of overtime 6am-1pm sat/sun (have done today, just had a snooze till 15:30 ) It seems to help working 60-70 hours a week, as i'm knackered enough to sleep as and when i get chance.Sunday is the hardest work 6am-1pm, then sleep 2pm-6pm, then have roast dinner, watch tv/internet before back to work at 10pm til 6am! Usually sleep like a log monday, and starts the rest of the week off well. Some people swear by having a drink(alcoholic) to help them sleep, i have found the exact opposite and not drinking at all is best for me.

Then I was so knackered by 9pm I went back to bed, then was up at 2-3am sat morning usually surfing the web. I was glad to get back on double day shifts after the three yrs I did em.

| Most patterns are actually 3 hours long, roughly, but it does vary a tad ![]() As for alcohol - it will make you sleepy but the type of sleep you'll get is not the same as a 'healthy' sleeping session. It is not ideal for sure. I do 70+ hours/week at the moment, so I have to be very careful to get sufficient sleep etc - all good fun ![]()

| Briskodian | For the last month or so, my sleeping has got worse. I used to be able to go to bed at 10pm and not wake untill 6am. Now it doesn`t matter what time i go to bed i`m fully awake a 4.30am, or if i wake up to go to the loo i can`t get back to sleep. This is now winding me up, i want to be able to sleep longer.

now now....... i was hyper on the coke. the whisky was the "downer" tactic. which worked rather well. a little too well....... body suffering from sever drop in caffiene levels. mate left a note for me this morning that simply said "elephants on/in a small cupboard" Apparently, I was singing about this several times last night, down the phone as well before the whisky, in case anyone thinks i was off my face on booze. It all went downhill after that, as I just remember being terribly emotional on my mates couch at some point before going to sleep. I only vaguely remember the pre-alchohol events, but no doubt anyone who encountered me last night will take great delight and "reminding" me. ![]()

No alarm clock needed any more!Probably get more sleep now than ever surprisingly, albeit interrupted.Bed has become a Godsend as opposed to worrying about going to bed (bit of an insomniac). Gwilo, you need to get someone pregnant )

| I work shifts. Up some mornings at 4am not home some nights till 1am,depending on shift. Done this for over 25 years and still get disterbed sleep pattens. I also think eating doesn't help. When you work shifts you are eating the wrong sort of food at the wrong time this can have an effect on your sleep patterns
