Tax codes and tax credits???

Just a couple of questions.

I recently got married and have been told to get my tax code updated. Should my work do this, and does it make any difference to my income tax??

Also, does anyone have any experience of Working Tax Credit. I filled in an online form which told me i was eligible, but what difference would it make?? Is it worth it??

IIRC when you go onto a married persons tax code you get a slightly larger tax free allowance so your income tax will decrease slightly.

Working family tax credits will also mean more money for you and no drawbacks.
If you don't want it then claim it and buy me some beer

Can a changed tax code be back dated to the date or marriage?

Based on what I had to do 4 years ago,

Ask your employer which tax office your employer goes through for your wages etc. then give them a ring...Tell them your national insurance number and that you have got married (your wife will need to do the same to her tax office) they will just ammend their records but it wil be for information purposes only. Your tax code will not change as there is no 'married persons tax allowance' any more so your tax code should stay the same as before.

As for working tax credit, IMHO if you earn anything over about £8k you'll get a token gesture typically if your joint income is about £25k you'll get about £500 a year ...just about covers the cost of nappies and milk for your baby if you add it to the child 'benefit'.....

My advice is keep any benefit in a safe place because the Inland revenue will just f*ok it up as usual and take it back off you anyway when they claim they have given you twice the amount you were entitled to...

In general for all benefits and taxes they can only be backdated to the date when you applied unless there is a good reason why you never applied sooner.

Married person's tax code? I know there is a married couples allowance for those born before 6 April 1935 but even I don't qualify for that.

A number of useful Inland Revenue PAYE tax guides are accessible via the link below:

I can't rightly remember how this works but...

family tax credit you'll only get it if you have kids and have a joint earnings of less than £55k.

just goes to show that the only way to get anything back from the system is to be either a fifteen year old girl who can't keep her knees together or you have smuggled yourself into the country in the back of some lorry.....

I have a 39 year old wife, two kids, and was born here. I don't earn a huge amount and Family Tax Credit and Working Tax Credit means I can afford the simple things in life like my car and the occasional meal. So there

I thought the married mans allowance had been reduced until removed. However, I understood that you could have your wifes tax allowance bundled over to yours so she would have any coding, but yours would be bigger. If you both work though it doesnt really make any difference.
