Use of protein powder for muscle gain

I always assumed that when training i should be using protein powder on a daily basis, as muscles were continually breaking down and rebuilding.

However, a friend only uses it after the gym, because he thinks his body uses it then, and dosen't take any on non-training days.

I have trawled the internet to see if i can find anything to back him up but to no avail.

Is there a proven optimum time to take protein supplement?

Re: Use of protein powder for muscle gain

Unless you're pushing them, you're muscles won't be breaking down or rebuilding enough to require suppliments. I'd suggest logic would dictate taking it after a tough workout and a few days after. If you're doing reps to failure every three days or so, then this would work out to be practically daily anyway.

If you're not working out to failure or that often, then I'd suggest not to be using suppliments anyway.

So in short, I think you're both right. But I'm not a certified physician or bodybuilder. So don't take my word for anything.

Re: Use of protein powder for muscle gain

Weh hey, this is my field

I train everyday (apart from the last two weeks due to illness) I try to consume as much protein as possible as part of my routine. This includes:

2 tins of tuna a day
2 hard boiled eggs a day
some form of meat
35G of whey protein powder
half a tub of cottage cheese

I eat the eggs in the morning as this is when your body most needs protein, and the tuna during the day. Before you train your body needs quick releasing protein so 30 mins before I train I have 35G of whey protein powder. After a heavy workout you need slow releasing protein, so I have half a tub of cottage cheese.

Its a lot of protein to take in and it isnt easy, too much protein can be a strain on your kidneys, although this amount isnt going to do any damage you should drink plenty of water.

I also take creatine and L-glutamine.

Feel free to ask any q's

Re: Use of protein powder for muscle gain

Can i just ask why you train everday please walkie? what are your goals - as if its building muscle then i would suggest a break from training with weights on at least one day if not a couple.
This is also my field - i guess...
If you're trying for a more muscular bdy then i would suggest Whey in water on waking as the body generally has not been fed for the last 7-8hours - this also applies to around 20-30minutes before a workout, and after! These are times when that(if pushed hard) the body will indeed break down protein within the muscle for energy. that is why it is essential to have whey protein, and also in water as it is suggested it will be digested far sooner.

HTH, if you want anymore info just shout - i have been bodybuilding since the age of 16 (15 years no - shock horror lol)

Walkie - How do you get on with Creatine. I started taking it a while ago but had to stop as it was really killing my Kidneys. I generally drink 3-4 litres of water a day (a lot I know) and with the creatine, I was really in agony.

Re: Use of protein powder for muscle gain

hmmm, that sounds worrying, too much creatine is toxic to your kidneys.

You should be taking 5g a day for a period of time (usually about 8 weeks) then have a break.

I take my creatine in water with whey protein

Re: Use of protein powder for muscle gain

I was attending a gym for about 5 years off and on, doing more strength than bodybuilding (pyramids). I never took it too serious, just trying to keep the weight up. I reached just over 14st (I'm 6'2") a couple of years ago, and i decided to stop the weights and just swim and run a bit to get fit. I managed this for nearly a year and then for the next 4/5 months on the run up to my wedding i stopped completely. When i got married i was 13st 2lbs!!

I decided in October to get back to the training and after a few weeks warm up i started a course of creatine and started taking protein powder daily. 4 weeks later i was much stronger and weighed 13st 12lbs. I have now run my course of creatine and i just want to continue with my programme taking some extra protein to counter my work out.

I train 3 times a week, and have much the same attitude as yourself to dieting. Tuna or chicken sarnies at lunch time, snack after work with a protein shake before training and maybe a protein shake the next morning if i have done a lot the night before.

I think you have sort of confirmed what i already knew about when and what to eat.
Cheers

Fair play if you have the time and patience to train everyday, don't think i could. Wife would complain for a start!!

Re: Use of protein powder for muscle gain

You actually only need about 2-3g of creatine per day during the maintenance period. Studies have shown that thats all your body will store, you just **** the rest away. It makes it last longer too!

Re: Use of protein powder for muscle gain

If I'm not mistaken, there was a thread on here which covered a lot of aspects of training sometime within the last 6 months or so which yielded a lot of interesting info.

Not sure how to find it though Perhaps someone who posted to it will recall it?

hehe, I know

I think the biggest bollox in the creatine world is 'the loading period' I was foolish enough to try that, had me running to the toilet every 30mins

Some people experience side effects, cramps, runs etc. One of my friends couldn't get off the toilet when he tried the stuuf.

I guess some people just don't have the stomach for it, but that is normal.

Re: Use of protein powder for muscle gain

I was only taking 3g of Creatine. My routine differs from both of yours.

I train every day but I train differently each day. I have my muscle groups split up so that I can cover the whole body in three training sessions (Train my legs every time I am in the gym; chest and biceps; back, shoulders, lats and traps; triceps, forearms and squatting(i kno this is legs))

So I do one of those groups every second day. The days in between, I do cardiovascular excersize and karate training.

So my week generally has 4 cardio days and 3 weightlifting days. Not interested in body building (I train pyramid method too) But I have to take protein and eat like a horse to keep my weight up for competing in karate events. At the moment I am 5'10" and 12stone 2 but I have been trying for a while to get up to 13stone.

I just dont think its achievable with the training I do. I would have to cut down on the cardio stuff and then I would lose overall fitness and definition.

Re: Use of protein powder for muscle gain

What type of karate do you do? i did Wado Rye (excuse spelling) for a couple of years. That sort of training keeps you in great shape and is the best thing i have seen for making you stretch you muscles.

Re: Use of protein powder for muscle gain

bodybuilding is more than just a way of training its a lifestyle (diet, rest, training(cardio and weights), supplements, physio/ stretching etc etc)..

I do both Shotu Kan (Again no idea with spelling) and Korean Kempo.

Shotu Kan is a lot of grips and holds and Korean Kempo is more like ur normal expectation of Karate only with full contact. And yeh ur right it keeps me in great shape. Not just physically but mentally too. And its amazing how far the body can actually stretch.

Re: Use of protein powder for muscle gain

Just because you consume 'shed' loads of protein, doesn't mean your body can utilise it. Most of it will be excreted via the renal system, so you'll have very expensive pi55.
If you take a Papaya suppliment or pineapple, it will help absorbtion, as will drinking a lot of water.

Over-training or 'under-resting' varies greatly between individuals and a 'listen to your body' approach is best.

John.

ps... walkie.. 2 eggs a day are really NOT a good idea..
eggs are one of the worst culprits for cholesterol.. which ISNT good... yoll end up with heart disease if you carry on. (ive been watching that autopsy life and death programme)

IIRC reccomended is about 3 eggs a week!

Re: Use of protein powder for muscle gain

Good to see that there are a few brothers of iron on here

I have been training for about 10 years, I always have a protein shake with my breakfast, 30 mins before training, main meal after training then another protein shake before bed.

When I used to train I had 18 eggs a day, throwing the yolks down the sink though.
This made up 3 drinks containing 6 egg whites at intervals through the day.

Jesus

I heard about throwing the yolk away as the egg white is where all the protein is contained.

Might give it a try, it all starts again Monday now I am better and I cant wait

I used to go by a local farm and buy in bulk (3 trays of 24 at a time), worked out quite cheap though my parents thought I'd finally flipped!!
