Hello folks,
As the title says, I'm currently in a dilemma concerning cars. I love my Octavia and don't want to part company, but the wage doesn't seem to go as far these days.

I gather a few of you in the Roomster section have made the transition from sportier Skodas to the more sensible option and was wondering if the pain of losing a vRS is outweighed by the fact that you're saving money?

Overall, a 1.9 Roomster would save me £740 a year in running costs (about £62 a month) and I'm trying to decide if my sanity and automotive needs would be comforted by this saving?

I am more than glad about the switch going from a modified Fabia VRs to the Roomy, the running costs are good and I am saving about £300 on payments.

You WILL miss the performance but love the practicallity. You can however tune the Roomy quite sucessfully to bring a bit of the fun back

Depends really.
With the price of Diesel at the moment im sure those savings would be smaller buy the end of the year

I managed to pay the loan company off already by not buying clothes, going on holiday and generally not spending any money. My only real costs are the day to day running outlays. What mpg is realistic, as the official quotes seem a bit optimistic? I currently get 31pmg average from the Octavia (that's using the full to the brim method).

Do you need all the things a roomster does?

If not,I'd get rid of the Octavia and get a Fabia vRS.You get plenty of oomph still for probably half the running costs of MK1.

Cheap tax,insurance and good mpg

(we have sold the octavia and Fabia vRS we had and I really miss them both)

Space is needed with one offspring (the wife wants another two!) and all that goes with them. If the family is to expand, we need to be able to pack everything into the boot. The Octavia as you all know does this with ease, but a downsize to a Fabia wouldn't work. The Mk2 Octavia estate is another contender, but I really like the look of the Roomster - yes I do like how it looks, especially in Scout guise.
Also, the Mk2 Octavia really does leave me cold in terms of looks, other than the vRS diesel estate, whereas the Roomster has something about it that I like. The only thing really is the lack of oomph, if they did a pd140 then I don't think I'd have to think about it for very long.

Mk1 vRS costs money to run...........If you sell that and get a roomster you will save money UNTIL.....

You go back to square one with more kids.........

So, no more kids and keep the Vrs.........

I would got your local dealer and ask to test drive one.

Whilst you say you like the look, you might hate the drive .

Only then can you really make up your mind.

Good point, I'll have to arrange that. However, after the drive to work this morning, it'd have to be pretty good to tempt me away from the Octavia.

After it's run in a good average (Real not read out) is about 48mpg and thats a mix of town and longer journeys although lately I have getting 52-53 mpg average on several journies. Servicing is the same if you get it done at a dealer. Tyres will cost less because they will last longer.

You can't go into this expecting miracles. The Roomy is a fine car, but it just wont do the same things as the Octy. It will save you money, it will be more practical for the kids etc but it isn't going to be as quick. It does handle surprisingly well though.

Hmmm. I'll spend some more time thinking this one through I reckon. The savings are there, but perhaps the loss of the whole driving experience isn't something I'm ready to see the back of yet.
