Favorit questions

Hi,

I am new here, and looking to get a few questions answered about my Favorit. Its a LXIe single point injection 1994 model, and requires some TLC.

It seems to have a flat spot, and splutter under heavy acceleration when you change gear. I have sprayed loads of carb cleaner down the throttle body, and the air filter is filthy, so I am gonna change that tomorrw too. Its there anything else I can do to help remove this, or is it a common problem?

Also, the oil filler cap is a very loose fit, and there is oil on the rocker cover, should the cap be a tight fit?

And the indicator switch is a bit dodgy, whenever you indicate right with the headlights on the main beams come on when the switch is between the neutral position and the right signalling position. Is there any way to fix this? Or failing that is a new switch available still?

The car never seems to reach a high temperature when in use. The heater blows warm air, but the temp guage barely rises above the line above the bottom of the scale. Is this normal? I guessed the thermostat is either stuck open, or missing completely, but I have not checked, as I do not have a replacement gasket. Are thermostats available for these?

Finally, there is no rev counter, and the engine is a little noisy when moving, so what speeds is it safe to rev to before changing gears?

Sorry for all the questions, I just want the car sorted so I do not cause any damage to the engine etc.

Re: Favorit questions

try giving the car a good service, ie plugs ,leads, oil ,filter, air filter. try a replacement cap from the scrappy or try and get a new rubber "o" ring. new indicator swithes are available from jorily skoda on ebay or butts of bawtry, possibly dealer if any old stock is still available, fit a new thermostat asap as winter is coming. as for the rev counter try and get a dash with a rev counter in it as they just plug in and work (did in the one i had) or get an after market one and sit it in a pod on the dash. the engines are pretty much bullet proof as long as you respect them and dont let them get too hoy

Re: Favorit questions

Thanks Rigsby,

I am gonna pop down to my local motorfactors tommorow and see if they have any service items in stock, I just thought I would see if there is anything else I should be looking for that I had overlooked. Oh and what grade oil do these take? As I don't have a manual for it yet.

I always keep an eye on the guages, and don't tend to work my cars too hard for long periods. However, I do have to travel on the motorway every day on the way to work, so I do tend to get upto 60 as fast as possible, but the engine has been running for at least 10 minutes prior to that.

I have only had the car around 2 weeks, and am slowly sorting it out. I'll keep a look out in the scrapyards for one I can get some spares from.

indicator stalks tend to break inside if abused, replace from ebay (jorily) or scrappie.
oil filler cap needs done asap as will not help engine at all!
full service needed. tappets need set to cure noise problem.
don't really need a rev counter if you listen to your engine, can be revved to 4k without harm, want to be changing between 2,250-3,000rpm ideally, which roughly is 10mph 1st, 25mph 2nd, 40mph 3rd, 55mph 4th, 67mph 5th. above those you pass the 3k mark which is beyond the main torque really.
rigsby is right on the thermostat. yours is broken, about a tenner from your factor, and often need replaced.
once you do that, replace your coolant with 50% concentrate.

Re: Favorit questions

Thanks suprising_skod,

I'm off down to my local motor factors now to see what they have. I do listen to the sound of the engine, but cos the tappets are out it rattles and sounds like it is revving faster than it is if you know what I mean. Are the tappet clearances the same on the pre and post injection engines, as I have seen a manual for one of these, but it does not cover the fuel injection engine.

I am in Preston, Lancashire.

I changed the air filter this morning, and took up the slack in the accelerator cable. That seems to have made a bit of a difference, but I'll see how it goes this week. I'm gonna change the oil filler cap and the thermostat regardless though.
