Default Ford Focus TDCI

My Fathers ford focus seems to exhibit a very odd characterisitc.

When started from warm it make a lot of a rattle and the clutch pedel actually comes upwards. Anybody got any ideas what on earth this could be.

Rattle - it's a diesel, it will do.

Clutch wise it could be (but someone with proper knowledge will come along ) that it's an hydraulic clutch so when the engine is started the hydraulic pressure is built up. Not sure on whether it has a hydraulic clutch though I must admit.

That was my thoughts, but TBH it is not something it usually does. We were wondering if maybe the clutch has gone, but TBH it sounds more like a slave cylinder or something to me than the clutch plate etc. I just don't know what set up the focus has for it's clutch etc.

How old is the car?

If its out of warranty, I'd be part-exing it pronto.

Spoke to father, and that sounds exactly like what he gets

On the possible plus point he remembered that when we bought it we decided to extend the warrenty (the car was an import so came with 2 years not 3). We added 2 years onto it and IIRC the car was first reg at the very start of 2003 on a 52 plate. I remember the debate he had with me when we collected it, but if this is the case i bet he will be glad he did.

So fingers crossed that means that it is covered should it be this. I think the policy is a warrenty direct one, but could be wrong.

How much is a new engine in one of these, i would guess myself at about £3k recon as a 1.9 XUD was about 2k when i looked at prices many moons ago.

In my previous dealings with that bunch of sharks they will almost certainly claim it is fair wear and tear or some other completely inplausable excuse.

The policy may well cover wear and tear - mine does (well on paper at least! ), but I suspect Ford won't put it down to wear and tear. If it isn't in warranty (and he wants it fixed), I'd be looking at independent Ford specialists who will likely come up with a better price and also do a better job

They that bad then? I was thinking of taking a polciy out with them on my skoda if i don't replace it with a vRS TDI or a PD140.

The policy states it covers wear and tear too :S

You know the more i look at this the more i think he should be parking it around the corner and taking it into the dealer when cold to part ex it :S

EDIT:

Well i wonder if you could get away with the not fit for purpose ruse as a car should surely last 6 years.
You know this really puts me off the focus I test drove the other day

Does rather doesn't it. I think i should get my father to take it to a local garage and get them to check for the damage above and avoid the ford dealer.

That way he can part ex it at the dealers

I forget whereabouts you're based in Hampshire, but I can highly recommend the chaps at Foundry Motors in Kings Worthy (just off the Winchester end of the A34)

Well after speaking with parents last night, they pretty much confirmed the link chris posted up is exactly what it is like

Obviously this is bad news and my father was considering another focus to go along side this one, which now won't be happening. The extended warrenty isn't with WD, it is with some company that is a wholey owned subsiduary of Ford, so fingers crossed they will be a bit better.

Now I'm guessing all we can do is wait for a diagnosis, and hope that they don't try and wriggle out of the warrenty.

Supprisingly enough completely disgusted as before the ford we had a citroen diesel and a pug DTurbo, that did quarter of a million miles and 130+k miles (before it was written off then appeared back on the road some how :S)

Completely attrocious that a 3 and a bit year old car should fail like this with well under 100k miles on it.

Don't suppose anyone has any clue what causes this, or what sort of cost you are looking at for repair (if possible) should the warrenty people manage to wriggle out of it.

From what I've read this is very uncommon (and the number of Foci on the roads seems to back this up!), although I did find the following on Honest John:-

"30/5/2000: all Focus automatics recalled because excessive crankshaft end float may allow torque convertor to contact crankshaft position sensor leading engine to cut out. Revised crankshaft thrust bearing and new crankshaft position sensor to be fitted."

which may or may not be applicable to the manual There's no hits on www.ffoc.co.uk either but worth dropping ric04vrs a pm as he knows his Fords

Good news, well on the whole new engine scale

Looks like there is an much more common problem that produces similar problems. A good local garage had a look and said there was no play in the engine where the post suggested.

The mechanic did say however that after a quick nosey around he was pretty confident it was the dual mass fly wheel, which means new flywheel and clutch etc etc.

Oh well, not at all cheap, but less expensive than a new engine hopefully. The car goes into a ford dealer in the not to near to see if the warrenty covers whatever is actually wrong.
