When moving off in first gear, occasionally the clutch is not engaging properly and I get a sort of "kangarooing". It used to happen only occasionally when I was pushing the car hard, but has happened twice today without pushing the gas pedal all that much. Once the clutch is pushed down and second gear is engaged all is fine.

Only thing I can think that it's likely to be is the clutch release bearing going iffy.

Any other ideas? Is it likely to get worse and need attention?

If you're in there for the bearing anyway, replace the plates too.

I guess I mayaswell wait till it gets unbearable to drive or completely fails. I wonder if it could be connected with oil I have spotted dripping from between engine and transmission case. In any case, new clutch, release bearing and flywheel oil seal (if leaking) should be an all-in-one job. Not sure I am confident enough to do something as involved as replacing the clutch.

Engine mounts seem rather solid but I'm no expert. The circular thing under the car is flaking underneath but is present and I assume that's usual wear and tear.

Update on this, month and a half on, it has not happened again. Either it's the way I was using the clutch or it was intermittent.

Only things I have done are to move the clutch cable heat shield up so it covers the cable at the manifolds, and also used WD40 on the top of the clutch pedal to remove a creak noise when the clutch was depressed and it feels noticeably lighter as well now.

for a while i had issues with my clutch doing funny things. not quite as you described, but on inspection my clutch cable heat shield had moved down the cable and the cable itself was being roasted by the exhaust manifold. prior to this it had seize solid while i was driving.

I pulled up to a set of lights and dipped the clutch. the lights changed but when i released the clutch the pedal stayed to the floor.

I sprayed it with WD40 and moved the shield up, and moved the cable. All was good after that!
