Previous cars (Best and worst)

I know the majority on here are now pioleting Skoda's of some decription, but i was wondering about your past cars. What has been the best car previously owned and the worst car previously owned, and how did you end up choosing the car ?!?

For me the worst car was a fill in car. A Proton Aerodeck 1.3. I bought it as a fill in between selling one car and buying another. I bought it because i new it was Mitsubishi parts and i figured it had to be reliable if nothing else. But in the 2 months i had it i only covered a couple of hundred miles. It was awul, the steering was too heavy with about 15 turns lock to lock. The engine was willing and almost sounds nice, but didn't like anything over 60mph. Everything about it was bad, the quality of the interior and fit and finish was terrible. A massive mistake buying that.....

Onwards and upwards, my fave car has to be my BMW E30 M3. I bought this car for a couple of reasons, i like my modern classics, and having owned a 325 E30 BMW i felt it was the natural progression. I bought the car for £7000 so it was a fantastic condition early model, a german import. I generally enjoyed the drive although it wasn't that easy. The performance and handling was spot on though, and that is one car i will never forget.

So come on then - fess up

My worst and best car are all in one - 1986 silver blue mini city! It was crap as it kept breaking down and leaking but i loved it to bits, especially when it did 30mph in 1st gear and watched the big cloud of black smoke come out of the back I also liked how if you pulled out the choke fully when it was warm it would do 32mph all on its own, i called it cruise control I wish i had kept it purely for sentimental value

Best car ..well the one I have now Octy elegance pd 130

Worst ...Vauxhall Astra 1.7 td I think it was on permanant self destruct mode.... 2 heads two sets of pistons, rings and rebores, new gear box, new clutch, it ate front tyres as well despite retracking ...mind you having a lousy Vaushall dealer to look after it didn't help.......walk into garage after second head blew, see service manager he looks up to the ceiling and asks Oh no it's not gone again has it ...reply Oh yes it has ...manager looks me straight in the eye and witha dead pan face says Oh bu*8er there's got be something wrong with it...at this point I threw the keys on his desk and walked out...thank god it was a company car quick phone call to the hire company and the garage woke up, something about loosing their Vauxhall franchise

Best car, escort cabriolet mentioned in another thread.Dead simple 1.6 efi sounded bloomin great with no alterations to it.Electric roof that only stuck once.Cheap insurance and it was paid for.Happy days

Why oh why did I trade it in for the mark 3 golf gti 2.0 that gave me no pleasure for years

The little digital boost gauge was cool.

Showed you how often your turbo had packed up

Several of mine count as both.
86 Scirocco - lovely drive but really unreliable.
93 Fiat Tipo - another nice drive and really comfy and spacious but well dodgy electrics and a huge thirst for oil and bulbs.

Best car was a J reg Vauxhall Astra 1.7D. Why? Bought it for £600 and sold it for £500 a year later. Used to fill it up with diesel once a month. Could park it anywhere without a care. Never cleaned it or hoovered it out and basically abused it big style but it never let me down.

Worst car was a Mk 3 Escort 1.3L. Bought it as a cheap runabout many moons ago when at College but it used to breakdown constantly. Driveshafts popping out was a favourite. God I hated that car and it had been a write-off aswell (although I knew that hence got it cheaply). Truly hateful piece of poo!!

Best car - a tie between my first Skoda (Octy I 1.6GLXi), which never went wrong, and a Rover Metro 1.4GS I had when I was a driving instructor years ago. 80,000 miles in 2 years, the only thing that went wrong was the sender unit in the radiator, and it was still on its first clutch when I sold it. Leather seats too!

Worst car - Volvo 340GL. Best not mentioned. Dreadful, dreadful car.

Best Car except for the vRS I have now... torn between my '97 Audi A4 1.6 or my first Rover 220 Coupe Turbo

Worst... An A reg Golf 1.3. First of the Mk2 shape. It was just crap in every way.

Worst car? Without doubt a Citroen BX TZD turbo-diesel estate. A truly hateful piece of machinery. Everything that's bad about French cars in one vehicle. I also had a Dolomite Sprint. Even more unreliable than the Citroen, but at least it had some redeeming points!

Best (apart from my Octy)? Toss up between my Triumph Vitesse 2 litre Mk 2 convertible and a Cavalier 4x4. On balance the Cavalier wins - most competent car I've ever owned - it got you from A to B rapidly, whatever the weather, and never let me down once.

Worst car: - A 'F' reg Ctiroen BX 1.6RS, only got it because I had to borrow it off my Dad because i couldn't afford to insure the Escort RS Turbo I made the mistake of buying

Best Car: - A beautiful Mk1 Golf GTI purchased from a scrapyard and rebuilt by my own hand, I loved that car more than anything until some bas***ds decided they loved it too and tried to steal it! Was never the same then

Never "owned" a bad car, although I "ran" a battered old E reg gutless Nissan Micra at university - It was owned by someone else at the time who was learning to drive and I didn't see the point in the car lying around wasting away when the owner kept failing driving test after driving test.

Obviously the best car I've owned is a toss-up between furby mkI and II - I think MkII is slightly better than MkI ever was, so have to say I currently own the best car I ever have.

Worst - a VW411 bought just after they went into production. Handled like a barge, needed a decoke after 20K, had suspension alignment problems which couldn't be sorted out even with help from VW UK and the largest VW dealership in the UK, and one cog in the gearbox shed a tooth which didn't do the internals any good. Then to add insult to injury VW introduced an updated version (VW412) not long afterwards.

Best - thats difficult. My 1953 Mercedes 300 had a certain presence and more goodies than you could shake a stick at, while my recent Senator 3.0 CDi 24V had presence too and very relaxed performance. Do I have to choose?

Worst & Best (can't really decide)...Had an Opel Omega 3.0 MV6 before I got my Fabia. I fixed her up, leather interiors & all, cleaned up...it was 5 years old but it still looked new...VERY fast I loved the kick it gave and the top end of 260kmph...it was soooo comfortable and sooo smoth on the road, smother than ANY new BMW you will find today.

Problems...got too expensive to maintain...Opel dealer was absolutely useless...had to sell it

Then again if I hadn't sold it I would have probably never been introduced to the Fabia...

I've enjoyed all my cars - even the crap ones! And god have I had some crap ones... MG Maestro 1600, MG Montego Turbo but worst of all was... another Montego (a 1.6L). It had an auto choke problem that meant I had to push start it oooh about 4 times a week!

Best would have to be the 5 series BMW I had before the vRS. Great car, built of granite, but too thirsty and slow. Nothing, and I mean nothing went wrong with that in the 4 yrs I had it. Not a squeek, not a rattle, not a failed sensor or coilpack..... Nothing.

Ahh, real Mini's. I know exactly what you mean, I wish I still had mine too. A 1979 Mini 850... in brown!

The choke on mine was the Turbo!

Worst car-G reg 1990 Escort 1.4L-has to have been the most soul less car I have ever owned .

Best car/s(sorry I couldn't choose between them)-52 2002 Audi A3 1.9TDI 130bhp Sport-great performance and economy , 03 2003 Mini Cooper, easily the best handling car I have ever had (still miss it). The Audi came after the Mini due to the amount of money I was spending filling it up with fuel.

Since the above 2 cars (2xAudi A4's since the A3) I have not been able to find anything that crosses the boxes like the Mini and the A3. Hopefully my just ordered Fabia VRS will do the job!

Worst was my Clio, 03 reg Billabong, biggest waste of £9500 ever. Constantly going wrong.

Best was my Nissan Sunny ZX Coupe 1.8 16valve DOHC, I was 18 with a car as fast as an RS Turbo but without the insurance hike. Great little flyer it was. Until I blew the headgasket, then it was pants. But still, I bought it for £500, sold for £800 broken and found it 2 weeks later dumped.

My G reg Astra should get a mention as it had about 320k on the clock and was on its 4th engine, a Nova SR 1.4 engine, no rear arches, just newspaper and filler, all sprayed by me. That was truely amazing it survived that long.

Worst Car - Mk2 Ford Cortina, it has put me off fords for life - Red with chrome trim, Alloys, Black plastic interior. Wallowed round corners badly. Seats glued you to them in hot weather. Steering Heavy. Drivers door could be opened with a an Ice cream Lolly stick. Only decent thing was the engine never needed oil top up.

Best car - Either Previous car ( Octy Ambient 1.9TDi (90BHP) Extras- Cruise, Alloys, Parking Sensors ) OR current Furby vRS.
Well I've decided has to be the Furby.

tweaked a bit and with a whole stack of toys including electronically adjustable suspension, full leather etc etc used to love "toying" with the XR boy racers of the day!

Best cars I've owned are Scooby Turbo and Land Rover Disco. Both modded and both very capable in their own ways! Worst car I've owned is a Corsa 1.2 Vegas - not really a bad car and never let us down, just not the sort of car you'd choose over the Scooby to pop out to the shops in

After reading through all this it's a tough one for me.

Best: My old Metro 1.3 Auto, mostly because it was first car, no only because it was my first car and has such good memories, though it was very quick(ish) with the choke out!! Next would be the 306 I had, it was fun to drive and reliable. And it couldn't out handle a scooby in the wet as I found out at castle combe!! Great day!!

Worst car: Really tough one! Either my Peugeot 206 2.0HDi with the furby replaced or the first saxo vts. Both let me down to oftern, both had dodgey gearbox issue, though atleast the saxo didn't have a steering problem to which the dealer said wasn't there (later this same issue was seen on watchdog!!)

Mate Hated car: Metro 1.3 HLE with replaced my first car it was a shed, would go into first, it hated me and I hated it.....got written off by the local boys when they broke in to it!
