Re: Rover 420 brake problems

Fluid leak, problems with the servo, master cylinder, or vacuum problem. Does he have any pads left, maybe the initial hard braking used up what was left.

Re: Rover 420 brake problems

Sounds like the disc pad material has come adrift

Re: Rover 420 brake problems

Agree with the above , sounds like friction material disappeared on the heavy brake application , then when pedal pressed again , the brakes had to take up the gap left by the friction material , hence looooong pedal and now grinding noise from metal to metal contact

Re: Rover 420 brake problems

I had two of these beasts - They go like stink -especially if you have the 420 turbo
140+mph 0-60 in about 6.5 secs.
Best thing was when some beemer or audi driver didnt realise that my grandad mobile was a lot quicker than theirs! (those were the days)

Loved it - very comfy - couldnt corner for ****, and soooooooo unreliable!!!!!!
3 headgaskets and one scrapped engine! but pulled like a train. funny enough it was somehow all worth it. Got my moneys worth out of the AA.

Anyhow.....
As for the brake pedal have you changed pads recently? Brake fluid on floor? Any pipe corrosion as my lines had to be changed. Other than that, master cylinder vacuum leak.

Re: Rover 420 brake problems

Was going to give another cause - worth remembering as it don't happen very often - master cylinder seal dodgy -fluid gets past seal into servo , and gets burnt. Only time you see any results is when you hammer brakes - brake fluid burns white
