Are Meets For Anoraks?

I have met many new friends through this forum and really enjoy our regular meet ups and other events but wondered if anyone on here has been put off at the thought of going along to one of these for fear of being engulfed by 'anoraks'!

Those that come along will know that not all of us have our heads stuck under the bonnet and have a really healthy social mix but interested in a more 'national' viewpoint.

Re: Are Meets For Anoraks?

Its certainly perceived that way. When asked what I'm doing at the meet, saying "I'm going to a Briskoda meet" normally needs following up with lots of justification and explaination...

Me too Tom, but do I care? Anyway, nothing wrong with a nice warm anorak when
stood in the middle of a windy car park

And who was it had their head under someone else's car bonnet within seconds of stopping at the pub

Re: Are Meets For Anoraks?

Have been to a few meets over the country, sometimes on my own or with the family. Some meets are more car orentated then others. Don't think the rest of the mdk1 clan would want to stand round for 6hrs at a RR Day. But they like going on the day meets I of W and WSM which are fun, not forgetting the odd Friday meet down the pub for something to eat and a chat.

Re: Are Meets For Anoraks?

I suppose in some respects it could be viewed as that but I would says it's the people that go that make the event.

I like to go along and chat with people, ok so we normally have a natter about the cars but in general most of it is spent eating, drinking and putting the world to rights.

Re: Are Meets For Anoraks?

Well I have definately heard of 1 person on this site who expects meets to be standing round cars in carparks, with a drink in hand.

It appears that the briskoda meets are trying to break the mold, and make it appeal to a broader audience. Well I know I am trying with the Maidstone meets anyway

Re: Are Meets For Anoraks?

Meets are a great way of finding out just how many people can actually squeeze into the boot of a Skoda Superb!

Nothing geeky about that

Re: Are Meets For Anoraks?

Don't think meets are sad,its just a group of people with same interests meeting up for a look at each others cars and having a chat, some people probably think its only geeks that go to car meets but thats fine, not worried by other peoples opinions anyway

Re: Are Meets For Anoraks?

Only those on Briskoda know of me frequenting this forum and meets, apart from Mr P of course. Family/friends/colleagues know nothing about this anorak side to me.

Going to meets reminds me of having eyeballs with people back in my CB days, now I did meet some dodgy people back then but I also met some damn decent ones too.

Thumbs up Re: Are Meets For Anoraks?

Meets are great, especially if they are accompanied by a well planned out country blast, with a pub lunch mixed in for good measure.

I have just been to my first Skoda meet met some really nice people, and I suppose I'll get to know them even better the more meets I go to, but I still attend the South Wales Scooby's meet every month, and there are no anoraks there just lots of people standing around with Subaru rally jackets on I've made some very good friends attending meets ok the car has changed but I will always go and see my old friends. So yes meets are good and the wife and kids go gets them socializing.

Re: Are Meets For Anoraks?

I've only been to one meet so far, mainly due to always being busy when the other meets were on, and i was worried everyone was going to be an anorak and they're not. The people are all chilled and laid back. The only problem i had was talking to them and introducing myself!!!

Re: Are Meets For Anoraks?

It's what people make it, I think. If people think it's an anorak meet, and they don't like anoraks, come along without an anorak, and make it a non-anorak meet!

The Cat 'n' Fiddle are a prime example of this, and are my favourite. Maybe that's because we hold them when anoraks aren't required? - then again we did have that February one when it was pretty cold!

Errr, anyway - I've voted no
