ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS AND ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI RS

"The King Is Dead, Long Live The King" – the sporty Škoda RS line has a new supreme model. 147 kW (200 bhp), 280 Nm from 1,800 to 5,000 rpm, 240 km/h, these are figures for the most powerful and rapid Škoda in standard production. The new Škoda Octavia RS is here.

HIGHLIGHTS

·RS even in details. The unique and exclusive character of the car is emphasised by many details that are inherent to the RS model, such as green brake callipers and the RS emblem on the radiator grill, fifth door, steering wheel, front and rear seats.
·Exclusivity. "Zenith" 18" alloy wheels (available as an option) and the completely new "Race Blue" and "Sprint Yellow" (from 2006) metallic colours are exclusively for Octavia RS models.
·Useful RS. Although the Octavia RS is definitely a car full of emotions and passion, its comfortable interior, spacious luggage compartment and engine characteristics make it a useful and full-value vehicle for everyday use.

World debut: Škoda Octavia RS and Škoda Octavia Combi RS

When the new Škoda Octavia was presented last spring the majority of professionals immediately asked if and when its RS sports version would be launched. This was just a natural response from both journalists and customers to the more dynamic shapes of the new model and the fame and positive evaluations of the preceding generation Octavia RS.

Excellent engine, lowered chassis, sports charisma but still a useful family car. These are just some of the opinions of Škoda RS cars. And this is precisely how the new Octavia RS, which is based on these traditions, is – lively, fast, dynamic, safe, comfortable and at the same time useful. A powerful engine producing 147 kW (200 bhp) together with a six-gear transmission and a perfectly adjusted sports chassis will make the adrenaline flow every time the accelerator is pressed. The Octavia RS has a comfortable and spacious interior and a huge luggage compartment making the car eminently suitable for a family holiday.
Octavia RS – a car of many faces

New Škoda Octavia RS and Škoda Octavia Combi RS:
continuing the Škoda sports car tradition

The recently launched Škoda Octavia RS continues the Škoda sports car tradition. It has a long history going back more than a hundred years – the time that the car manufacturer from Mladá Boleslav has been participating in motorsport races. The tradition of mass produced sports cars dates back to the middle of 1930’s when the Škoda Popular Sport – Monte Carlo and Škoda Rapid Six were manufactured.
Tradition of mass produced sports cars

The RS identification was first used by Škoda in the mid 1970’s with the launch of the legendary Škoda 130 RS – one of the most successful sports cars of that time in the up to 1,300 cm3 category. It is also worth recalling the victory of Škoda 130 RS in the European Championship of makes in a passenger-car competition on circuits in 1981 and its successes during the famous Monte Carlo Rally.
Škoda 130 RS

The RS identification appeared again in 2000 when the sporting Škoda Octavia RS with a 1.8 20V Turbo producing 132 kW (180 bhp) was presented and rapidly became a jewel in Škoda’s crown. From 2002 the Octavia RS has also been available as an estate. The Octavia RS is renowned not only for its frequently stated use value, which just happens to be one of the top parameters of Škoda Octavia RS in the sports car category but also for its outstanding driving pleasure. The RS model combines sports driving pleasure with a car for everyday use. In 2003 the Octavia RS gained a little sibling - the Fabia RS. This sports model has the 1.9 TDI PD/96 kW diesel engine which makes it an incredibly dynamic vehicle with low fuel consumption.

The RS at first glance – exterior design

"From the race circuit directly to the road". This is exactly the feeling that the new Octavia RS produces. With the exclusive Race Blue colour the vehicle is ready to excite all your senses. Certainly, it is the Škoda Octavia, but first of all it is the RS car!

Unequivocal design: the most frequently mentioned topics are a dynamic character and speed. Lowered sports chassis, agile appearance, a front and rear bumper with an integrated spoiler, a rear bumper with "Cat's eyes" reflectors, a spoiler on the fifth door (on the hatchback), Zenith 17" alloy wheels - these are clearly distinguishing features of the RS exterior design.
RS design

Nothing disturbs the harmonious and smooth lines – the door handles, mirrors and protective side strips are in the body colour and the new sports bumpers do not have black protective strips. The front section is dominated by the robust bumper with an integrated spoiler, round fog lamps and a large air inlet in the centre. Another distinguishing feature of the front section is the projector halogen headlamps. These lamps use an optical system rather than a reflector to disperse light on the road, like xenon headlights, which are available as an option.
Smooth lines

The rear section is dominated by the new bumper with a spoiler and "Cat’s eyes" – clearly visible reflectors which further emphasise the dynamic design of the car and improve its visibility, e.g. at night. In addition the car has a double high quality metal tailpipe. The hatchback has an eye-catching fifth door spoiler (an elegant spoiler is standard for the "normal" estate). The entire rear section produces an emotional but at the same time balanced impression – and this is the view other drivers will get most frequently of the Octavia RS.
Cat's eyes

The design of a sports car must include attractive wheels – and the Zenith 17" alloy wheels are just that highlighting the sporty nature and overall dynamic character of the car. And for true admirers of "swift wheels" Zenith 18" wheels are available as an option. The green disc brake callipers are clearly visible through the spokes of the wheel displaying another typical feature of Škoda RS sports models.
Zenith alloy wheels

In addition to the new exclusive Race Blue and Sprint Yellow (from 2006) colours the Škoda Octavia RS and Škoda Octavia Combi RS are available in three other attractive colours – silver-diamond metallic, Corrida Red and Magic Black with pearl effect.
Five exterior colours

The image of the new model with the winged arrow logo is enhanced by the newly designed RS emblem on the fifth door and the radiator grill. All these features together make the cars named Škoda Octavia RS and Škoda Octavia Combi RS unique and original.
The new RS emblem

On a wave of emotions for the RS – sports interior

The interior also clearly demonstrates where the Octavia RS belongs – its sports atmosphere emanates from every detail. An original combination of black and silver, leather and fabric together with the "Alu-Look" trim give the car its exclusive character.

The new black-silver sports seats with the RS logo support the body perfectly, just as it should be in a true sports car. And an ergonomic three-spoke leather steering wheel is an integral part of every sports car. Total control in all situations is essential in a vehicle like the RS and the driver must always be able to hold the steering wheel firmly therefore certain parts of the steering wheel rim are in embossed leather to give a perfect grip. A plaque with the RS emblem further enhances the general impression of the car, as do many other items such as "Alu-Look" trim on the instrument panel and door panels, black ceiling upholstery, removable mats with silver triming and silver data on the instruments, all helping to give the car its unique character. The leather gear lever is decorated with a new plaque with a matt silver finish especially for the RS model. In addition the door sills with the RS emblem and pedals with metal covers increase the feeling of power and speed.
Sports seats for comfort and security

Octavia RS cars are not only for driving safely at high speeds but are perfectly suited to the needs of everyday life. The interior has ample comfort and room for all occupants in addition to various storage compartments, useful boxes and smart details – just simply theOctavia model. Also the huge 560 l or 580 l (in the estate) luggage compartment shows that the Škoda Octavia RS is a flexible and unique vehicle. The Škoda Octavia RS is a perfect solution for those looking for sports driving but at the same time need the comfort and characteristics of a family car.
For everyday driving

The pleasure of driving with standard equipment – standard and optional equipment

RS cars are the answer for anyone looking for an original car that stands out from the crowd. Features that make the Škoda Octavia RS a unique vehicle include its design, characteristics and standard equipment – for example four airbags, ABS, tilt and rake-adjustable steering wheel, height-adjustable driver and front passenger seats, central locking with remote control, onboard computer, electric front windows, electric and heated door mirrors, Climatic air conditioning, Stream radio with CD player and, as a bonus, an outstanding driving experience.

Extensive standard equipment

A wide range of optional equipment shows that the Škoda Octavia RS is not a car of compromises and limited choices. The optional equipment includes curtain airbags, ESP, Climatronic two-zone air conditioning, cruise control, heated front seats, xenon headlights, rain sensor, electrochromatic rear view and door mirrors, phone preparation, radios and navigation systems.
Optional equipment

200 bhp under the bonnet – the 2.0 TFSI/147 kW engine

The heart of the Octavia RS is the powerful TFSI 2.0 l engine producing 147 kW (200 bhp). This engine with direct injection has an incredible torque of 280 Nm which is moreover available from 1,800 to 5,000 rpm. This takes the car from 0 to 100 km/h in only 7.3 seconds and on to a maximum speed of 240 km/h (estate: 7.5 s and 238 km/h). It complies with EU 4 and has a combined consumption of only 7.8 l per 100 kilometres. A manual six-gear transmission which perfectly matches the engine’s characteristics and has precise and smooth movements is standard.

Six-gear transmission

The four-cylinder 2.0 TFSI engine is the very first turbocharged petrol engine where the fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber. The injectors on the cylinder head work with a pressure of up to 11 MPa (110 bar), compared with a pressure of approximately 0.4 MPa (4 bar) of standard injection into the intake manifold. Two balancing shafts rotating in opposite directions help to make the engine smooth.
The high pressure injection system

Two balancing shafts

The 2.0 TFSI uses only an homogenously distributed air-fuel mixture within the combustion chamber providing the maximum response at every point along the broad engine-revolution band. The engine has inlet duct geometry modified from that of the 2.0 FSI engine, producing even higher tumble values. This solution gives the four-valve turbo engine a compression ratio of 10.5:1, a figure that is otherwise usually achieved only by naturally-aspirated engines. The turbocharger coupled with the sophisticated direct petrol injection system play a crucial role in boosting the thermodynamic efficiency compared with both manifold injection engines and conventional turbo engines.

Every bend is a challenge – the body and the chassis

Each bend is a challenge for the Octavia RS – every part and component has been designed to transform the engine's output into the joy and pleasure of driving.

The body has been braced with special reinforcements to increase the torsion strength. The chassis has been appropriately adjusted – it has 12 mm lower clearance and modified shock absorbers and springs. And the result? Agile and extraordinary driving characteristics and outstanding steering control, simply the RS in all situations.
Reinforced body and modified chassis

ABS including EBD, MBA, EBC and ASR which help the efficient brakes to keep control of the two hundred horse power under the bonnet is standard. Larger brake discs with inner cooling on all wheels and green callipers are the logical answer to the exhilarating output of this car. Standard tyre pressure monitoring – TPM also helps to increase the high standard of active safety.
Efficient brakes

TMP as standard

The ESP electronic stability programme is an option for the Škoda Octavia RS and Octavia Combi RS (standard on selected markets). Vehicles with the ESP system also have:
The ESP system
ABS – Anti-lock Braking System;

EBD – Electronic Brake force Distribution (between the axles);

HBA – Hydraulic braking assistant;

EBC – Engine Braking Control;

EDL – Electronic differential lock;

ASR – Traction control system;

ESBS – Extended driving stability system;

DSR – (Driver Steering Recommendation) active steering support.

Škoda Octavia RS vehicles are the focal point of Škoda Auto’s display at this year’s IAA in Frankfurt am Main and are presented alongside the complete current range of Škoda models – from the smallest Fabia to the Octavia and the luxurious Superb, including limited "Edition 100" models marking the hundredth anniversary from the manufacture of Škoda’s first car.
Škoda Auto at the Frankfurt Motorshow 2005

The world premiere of both the hatchback and estate of the Škoda Octavia RS sports model will undoubtedly be the most important event at the Škoda Auto stand. Škoda Octavia RS with the highest output of the current production of the Mladá Boleslav based car manufacturer continues the successful series of sports oriented Škoda models. The car’s attractive dynamic design clearly shows its character and that it is one of the family of RS vehicles. The 2.0 TFSI turbocharged petrol engine with direct fuel injection, an output of 147 kW (200 bhp) and an exceptional torque of 280 Nm available over a wide engine rev range gives the vehicle outstanding performance. Its maximum speed of 240 km/h (estate 238 km/h) makes Octavia RS the fastest Škoda car manufactured in series. Despite its clearly sporty character, Octavia RS is still a very practical car with all the advantages of the Octavia model range, such as a spacious and comfortable interior, excellent workmanship and an above-average luggage compartment.
World premiere: Škoda Octavia RS and Škoda Octavia Combi RS

A few significant changes have been made to the range of engines available with the Fabia, Octavia Tour and Superb models in connection with introducing the EU 4 emission standard for diesel engines in the autumn this year. Škoda had already made sure that diesel engines for Octavia models and petrol engines for all models complied with EU 4 some time ago; some power units met this standard as long ago as 1999.
EU 4 standard for diesel engines

Two new three-cylinder diesel engines with outputs of 51 and 59 kW and a displacement of 1.4 l are now available for the Fabia. These power units have improved output characteristics and replace the 1.4 TDI PD/55 kW engine, which will be discontinued. The two remaining existing power units - 1.9 TDI PD/74 kW and 1.9 TDI PD/96 kW (the RS version) are now available in slightly modified versions complying with EU 4. The 1.9 SDI/47 kW engine, which complies with EU 3, will only be offered on selected markets.
Škoda Fabia: 1.4 TDI PD/51 kW and 1.4 TDI PD/59 kW

Two new diesel engines – 1.9 TDI PD/77 kW and 2.0 TDI PD/103 kW will be available for the Superb and the latter will be offered with a six-gear manual transmission. The 1.9 TDI PD/77 kW engine replaces the current engine with identical displacement and an output of 74 kW. Another available power unit - V6 2.5 TDI/120 kW has complied with the EU 4 standard since its launch. The 1.9 TDI PD/96 kW engine, which complies with the EU 3 standard, will remain on selected markets only.
Škoda Superb: 1.9 TDI PD/77 kW and 2.0 TDI PD/103 kW

A few changes have also been made to the current range of the Octavia Tour model. The 1.9 TDI PD/74 kW engine with a five-gear transmission will also be available with front-wheel drive (until now only available with the 4x4 version with six-gear manual transmission). The 1.9 TDI PD/74 kW engine now meets the EU 4 standard. As the new generation of the Octavia RS sports model is launched, manufacture of the Škoda Octavia Tour RS model with the 1.8 20V Turbo/132 kW engine is discontinued and the 2.0 MPI/85 kW (EU 4) and 1.9 TDI/81 kW engines and all Octavia Combi Tour 4x4 versions will also be withdrawn before the end of this year. The popular 1.9 TDI/66 kW engine will only be available on markets with older emission standards still in force.
Škoda Octavia Tour: 1.9 TDI PD/74 kW

Significant innovations for environmental protection include the use of the DPF particulate filter (from the German Dieselrußpartikelfilter) with selected diesel engines.From the end of this year, the diesel particulate filter with the 2.0 TDI PD/103 kW engine will be standard for Superb and for Octavia as an option. The particulate filter will also be available later for Octavia with the 1.9 TDI PD/77 kW engine. These filters are standard and have as low an amount of solid particles as 5 mg/km.
Diesel particulate filter – DPF

Soot must be regularly removed from the particulate filter to prevent it fouling and not working so well.The elements trapped in the filter are burnt during this phase at a temperature of approximately 500 °C. The regeneration process takes place either directly via the design and control of the system (Octavia models) or it is supported by adding additives to fuel (Superb models).
Regeneration process

The option of adding these filters as a Škoda Genuine Part to selected models with diesel engines that comply with EU 4 or EU 3 (and EU 2 in case of the Octavia Tour) is being prepared for selected markets.This reduces the amount of solid particles in the exhaust gas by approximately 50%.
Additional assembly

A few interesting innovations for the 2006 model year (the manufacture of this model year commenced at the end of May this year for all models) can be seen on the exhibited vehicles. Examples for the Fabia include the Dual Rate braking assistant and darker tinted SunSet glass. New equipment for the Octavia includes the modern DSR system – Driver Steering Recommendation (included in ESP), a hill start assistant, GSM phone preparation with Bluetooth technology, sports front seats and a three-spoke sports steering wheel, independent auxiliary heating and a new version of the navigation system. The Superb also has some interesting innovations for the 2006 model year – a heated windscreen, new Alcantara leather upholstery, Bolid alloy wheels, a chrome plated radiator grille frame, a sports package, etc.

ŠKODA AUTO CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF CAR MANUFACTURE

Škoda Auto commemorates two important jubilees: The 100th anniversary of the production of its first automobile and 110 years of the company's existence. Visitors to the Frankfurt Motor Show can see not only the present and the future of cars with the winged arrow in the emblem but also their rich history.

The car factory in Mladá Boleslav, took the names of its founders, tradesmen Václav Laurin and Václav Klement when the company was formed, one hundred and ten years ago. The history of the factory dates back to 1895, when the manufacture of bicycles commenced. The manufacture of bicycles was later extended by the production of motorcycles and the production of cars commenced in 1905.
110 years of the company

One hundred years of the manufacture of passenger vehicles is another jubilee that Škoda Auto will be celebrating this year. It was just one hundred years ago that the first car left the production plant in Mladá Boleslav. The Voiturette Laurin & Klement A commenced a new period in the company's history. Very few car factories have such a long and uninterrupted history that continues to today. Škoda Auto is one of the world's oldest car-makers. Its rich history, which includes the introduction of many new and original technical solutions, is presented at the Škoda Auto Museum in Mladá Boleslav. Even today, the Laurin & Klement marque evokes feelings of exclusivity, quality and reliability. This tradition is now being successfully continued by the Fabia, Octavia and Superb models. The current modern plants of the car maker clearly demonstrate its contemporary technological progress in the production of automobiles.
