2001 (51) Silver Octavia vRS for sale. 108000 miles, £3500 ono

For sale is my silver Octavia vRS. I've had it for a year and I love it to bits, but unfortunately it's got to go as I'm moving to Germany in September. It's got all the usual vRS stuff and has a full service history, Tax til October 08 and an MOT til Feb 09. I'm the 3rd owner, the previous one bought it off his boss when he upgraded to a new shape vRS. Only thing to note is that the head unit pictured won't be included in the sale, I'll be putting the standard one back in. The car is located off J11 of the M62 near Warrington most of the time, but my parents live in Coventry so if that would be easier for anyone I can take it down there for a viewing too. Can anyone give me a bit of help here? I've been trying to sell this for a couple of weeks now and have had a grand total of no interest whatsoever so far. Does noone want these at the moment? I can't believe it's the price- seems an absolute bargain to me considering I sold a slightly older MG ZS 180 for £3400 last year which was a much worse car (no faster, only did 19mpg and had the interior of a mid 90's Honda!) - and it was canary yellow!

See now that just seems ridiculously low to me. I've certainly not seen any advertised for that price (apart from 130k miles plus examples), and when I bought it (1 year ago almost to the day for £3900) there weren't any for sale for less than 4 grand and Glass' reckoned it was worth £3800. It can't have lost over a grand in a year, surely?

I normally work on a grand a year depreciation (on a family sized car) after the first 3 yrs (obviously much more than this in the first couple of years) There does reach a point however when it then slows right down.

New models coming out and things like MPG when fuel is high also hits the resale figure pretty hard (as will the new tax system).

A good bet is too look at Autotrader prices, knock a couple of hundred quid off and that will give you a rough market value of the car - providing it sells.
Or try eBay's 'completed listings' to see what they are actually selling for.
Some people also wont touch anything over 100k - more fool them.
Its also a buyers market at the moment, look at how long some of the other cars have been for sale on here, they just don't seem to be shifting.

Hmmmm, that's not a good sign- only 2 of the ebay auctions sold, all of the others failed to reach their reserve or even get a bid (mine included!) And who knows whether the classifieds sold or not? I based my asking price on Autotrader so that it was one of the cheapest on there, but obviously none of the others are selling. This would be the perfect time to make me an offer- I'm starting to worry that I'm going to go off to Germany and leave behind a car which will just be sitting on my parents' drive losing even more money.

When was the cambelt done ? and was the water pump changed to a metal impeller one ?

The water pump has been changed, and the cambelt was done at the same time (by a previous owner). This happened before the service was done where the belt change is due, but I'll have to have a look through the documents this evening to tell you exactly when as I can't remember off the top of my head. I'm not sure whether the water pump was changed to a metal impeller one, but I've had no water pump related problems. By the way, it's also had all the coil packs replaced.

I don't think much is selling in general! I have been trying to sell a trailer since the spring and I have had no luck at all. Lots of different places tried, so probably not just cars!

I have been watching E-bay for a few weeks and like you say not many have sold and of those 1 went for 4K (I think seller was bumping his own price??)

It just depends on how quickly you need to get rid of???

E-bay looks you best bet but IMO 2.5K - 3K is all your going to get

Unfortunately I need to sell pretty quickly- the planned move date to Germany is 15th September and I want it gone well before that. Otherwise I either have to get my dad to sell it for me (who knows nothing at all about it) or it just sits here in the UK not being used and losing more and more money.

It's on ebay as a classified, so I reckon I'll put the price down to £3k and see what happens.

I would have thought these would be really popular with fuel at the price it is- surely some people (like me) still want a fast car, but one that's comparatively economical? The vRS fits that bill perfectly.

That's the thing- apart from the cambelt and water pump it's had no work done on it because none has been needed. I'd love to flesh out the ad with a list of stuff that's been replaced, but apart from the usual stuff like tyres, coil packs etc nothing has needed doing! I'm trying to find out exactly when the cambelt was changed- the receipt doesn't have a mileage on it. All I know is that it was before the scheduled service because the Skoda dealer which did the service has put that the belt didn't need replacing.

Belts need doing every 60K miles or 4 yrs. So your's will be due another one next year, depending on when the last one was done.

I'm tempted but the offer wouldn't be anywhere near your asking price to be honest.

edit - (trade price as it'll need another cambelt and metal impeller pump to be sure based on age and not know if a metal impeller pump was fitted)

Car prices are low these days, you have to be realistic, cars are going cheap at auctions up and down the country.

You look on piston heads at prices people want for there motors, and you have to laugh.
