Talking Dartmoor Hike for fatties.

In my effort to get some exercise, just wondering if anyone fancied a quick yomp over Dartmoor at some time. I know some good routes over the moor, thanks to Ten Tors training & doing. Can get a perfect start point, take in some cracking views and routes, go to the best pub on the edge of the moor for beer/lunch, then yomp back to the cars for late afternoon, maybe a social in the evening?

Would be a circa 20/25 mile route I reckon. Would be nice to break in my hiking boots again.

I reckon it would be best for around late Spring.

20 miles is a lot for people who don't hike regularly. I'd be up for it, haven't played on Dartmoor yet. One of the walks my eye is on for the future is the Two Moors Way...

Well, actually thinking about it, given my current fitness it might be hard for me too. I think I'll say 15 miles, and try and plan it around that. Will be Northern Dartmoor too, so is a lot more hilly than the southern half. Only 2000ft the highest peak.

I've got a nice little route that I'll be trying out with Cheryl in a month or so. Only a wee route though:

Start at Swallerton Gate (base of Hound Tor), go over Hound Tor then via Greator Rocks to Holwell Tor and on to Haytor Rocks. From there go over Saddle Tor to the little road (C road), follwo that west to Hemsworthy GAte and carry on up to Top Tor. 3 more Tors to go, in order; Bell Tor, Chinkwell Tor and Honeybag Tor. Then head back to the car.

Totals about 6.5 miles and should take about 3 hours (more if I play at scrambling on the tors )

Another route for you Jason

You probably can't get the detail as you need to login to see the detail.

jon.

That route sounds cool - I know some good'uns in the North, but a bit heavy slopes for some people maybe, so perhaps the eastern side / south eastern side would be a better overall mix?

Scrambling on tors? ya big kid! Yeah, I make a habit of it too, especially on haytor.

naa it's flat 15 miles will be a doddle...PB is just over 32 miles in a day....I was young and trying to impress a girl (mad on football) far more athletic than I was, I failed; hence I hate football but like walking

But I put the failure down to trippin on the top rung of a style at about 10miles...did another 5 before the nettle rash began to ease of on my face, arms and legs...never trip on a style into a bed of nettles.

If only!!!! woudn't mind walking over the moor again wasn't too keen on the the ground that wobbled when you walked on it...we were told it was a bog but perfectly safe to walk on....how deep is it don't know the longest stick we had vanished before it reached the bottom

Yeah, know what you mean - that awful dog howling in the distance doesn't help, either

S'cuse me Mr Jasey! I've got the sole rights for the use of the word 'fatties' for our organised walks!

Wanna get a proper walk sorted anyway matey, instead of poncing around in the heather like a bunch of gerl guides

Openly highjacking this thread now ...I'm off up Snowden this Sunday to check the route out for suitability. May possibly nip into Pete's Eats and a couple of boozers on the way home too...just for research mind!

Now there's dedication and organisation for you...only the members interests at heart.

You crack me up sometimes, CJ I was planning to do the northern end of Dartmoor anyway, as its a wee bit more rugged, and poncing around in the heather is a little tough, as there ain't much of it up that end.
