The toilet facilities were a little basic There were toilets, trench or portacabin if you were feeling a bit nancy boy. Field toilet for the better equipped. The drugs, there were lots of those, though strangley (to outsiders at least) there was zero tolerance of heroin sales on site, enforced in a swift and effective (if brutal) manner. Untaxed and uninsured vehicles were uncommon with the regular crowd. The coaches used to be stopped and checked / searched all the time. Back then the police could actually enforce the law as the hippies were not an ethnic minority. The problems started the year the police made it clear there would be confrontation. This got the "wrong element" involved, there for the fight. The policing was usually one or two coppers down at the monument car park, who were there if you needed them. The last year I went, the year before the confrontation started, there were perhaps 8 or 10 policemen on duty to ensure the road was crossed safely and not blocked for traffic. No trouble, no arrests. Pretty impressive given the estimated 30,000 partygoers that day. The cleanups were by volonteer staffed truck rounds organised by Polytantric Circle IIRC who toured the site all day every day collecting refuse and taking it down the tip. Where it all went wrong was when the government of the day decided it was time to ruin it for everybody. At the time anti government feeling was running high with poll tax and miners issues amongst other things. There were plenty of people who had never been to a festival going purely for the fight. As with all thing, politics ruined it. Believe what version of events you will, but as an attendee of 4 years, I know when it was good and stayed away when it went bad. Chris

| Re: Feeler thread for a Briskoda Stone Henge meet I preferred Stone Henge to Avebury stones. I found Avebury a bit unimpressive really, it's on too much of a large spaced out scale to give any real feeling. I quite like the Rollrite (sp) stones as stone circles go. Not been there for years, they are kinda spooky I will see what I can do re attending this ![]()

| Re: Feeler thread for a Briskoda Stone Henge meet Last time we had a brisky meet in Marlborough and ended up in Avebury, you couldn't get near the Red Lion unless you had a pointy white had and a magical stick. Music inside was so loud, I was convinced the roof was about to go pop. A couple of naked people too being photographed .I think we need to "book early to avoid disappointment" Or we all turn up in capes ![]() From the last visit ![]() Wierd lady with hat (although not pointy!) trying to lure sheep to the occult ![]() A manic and possessed teenager preparing her magic wand for the move to Avebury (and I thought it was a car radio aeriel )Another individual with some strange invisible glasses Yay, a genuine wizard at last ![]()
