If the police have the resources to clamp down on number plates then how come they can't clamp down on burglers, muggers, rapists etc.?

cos they do what the govt tells them.

so until brown finds a wayto tax rape its not profitable to tackle it.

There is a school of thought that by cracking down on small issues you catch the people who commit worse crimes and the world is a better place - called zero tolerance isn't it?

Clearly not working

Also and this needs a new thread and I cba, but have you heard about plans to relate motoring fine to how much you earn?

Yep, you are so right. Just tonight I have had a small plate & an american style one on my car since I brought it - I have been stopped numerous times, & now some over-zealoys copper will be issuing a court summons against me for displaying the plates, despite the fact that I keep the originals in my car & can change them over quickly!

Of course as the law can only apply to the UK I am sure their will be some company repositioning going on.

Cant we get another dubmeister group buy going? They still seem to be selling them and there is no news about them stopping! I would also like a couple more, my front plate is bent

Re: Anyone use show plates? - Not any more!

To add my two pence worth, when they clamp down on illegally spaced plates as well as illegally "fonted" plates, I'll take more notice of what (the powers that be) are saying and why they're saying it.

Until then... I reserve judgement.

By the way...

All UK based (legal) number plate suppliers now have to register with the DVLA, even those in NI and Scotland.

I know this because we (see my profile if you don't know) have had to register all our stores there, whereas we had only previously registered our English stores.

You only have to be registered, however, if you make road legal plates...

Does this mean legal plates purchased in Scotland will need paperwork?

As the channel islands are only a Uk dependancy (same as the Isle of Man) they can and do make their own laws and only rely on the UK for defence (which really helped in WW2, but thats another story). So I would guess not.
Jersey and Guernsey both have different number plate systems to the UK, so unless you knew a channel islands company that made show plates to send to the UK I think you would be out of luck (Guernsey uses only numbers, Jersey uses numbers and a 'J' prefix)

I would have thought that would have been the case anyway given the DVLA covers all of mainland britain, and that the law requiring paperwork would have been island wide.

This may apply to stores but it seems not to apply to the internet...

I'm guessing if the company is based abroad it'll be hard to enforce but internet companies will be the easiest to prosecute. Test purchasing can be done from the desk at Trading Standards HQ and a £2500 fine sent out the day the plate arrives.

Re: Anyone use show plates? - Not any more!

i was under the impression 'show plates' would now have to be sold as 'signs' therfore not being illegal to make. although i dont really fancy my chances as anything with a registration on it would in my eyes be classed as a plate.

i'm guessing if your cars older than the legislation you could blag these were made before the change but doesn't leave you open for newer cars.
