I am wanting to start detailing my car, but have no idea what i really need.

I have found this online Autoglym 4WheelPlay Super Deal 4WheelPlay Car Accessories, Autoglym - Car Polish - Try New Auto Glym Aqua Wax and to me looks like most of the stuff I think I will need.

Will this do the job?
What do you think of Autoglym?
Is this good value for money? as I am wanting to do this on a budget!

Autoglym Clean Wheels - 500ml Never tried, but avoid if too strong.
Autoglym Super Resin Polish - 1ltr Good results, but I find it has too much filler and leaves loads of white powdery residue to wipe off.
Autoglym Body Work Shampoo Conditioner - 1ltr Pretty good
Autoglym Perfect Polishing Cloth A bit agresive. Use microfibre cloths (Meguires or Halfords are pretty good)
Autoglym Instant Show Shine - 450ml Never tried
Autoglym Fast Glass - 500ml Never tried
Autoglym Vinyl & Rubber Care - 500ml Works pretty well
Autoglym Intensive Tar Remover - 325ml Fantastic stuff
Autoglym Instant Tyre Dressing - 500ml Again, good stuff. works on all rubber
Autoglym Aqua Dry Not sure. I use a megs water magnet

I tend to get very good results with AG cleaning stuff (leather cleaner, engine cleaner etc) and rubber care, and the extra gloss protection is really good stuff, as a final top coat, but prefer Meguires polish for hand polishing, and sonus if I use the machine. Then a good wax, which is kind of essential, but not in the kit. My basic low cost kit would be:-

Megs gold class shampoo
Megs clay bar
Megs step 1 paint cleanser
megs step 2 polish
megs scratch x, for the deeper scratches/swirl marks
Megs step 3 carnuba wax
AG Extra gloss protection (goes on over the was, and makes the lot last for 6+ months)
Should be able to get that lot for similar money.

As an upgrade, Poorboys natty paste wax, or similar is much better than the megs.

Also, get a sheepskin wash mit, as massive damage can be caused by a sponge. Forget the AG polishing cloths and use any decent microfibre cloth for polishing/waxing. Its much safer/easier.

The list of alternatives is endless, and everyone has an opinion. The above is just mine. Do a search or read through the detailing section for info on other products.

Anything Ayto Glym is spot on in my oppinion.

I would recomend that you use the super resin polish first, then a coat of ultra deap shine the to finish, the high gloss protection ( this is a bugger to buff up, follow the instructions on this one to the letter.) For the tyres, use the vynal and rubber care, applied with a brush. Windows, the glass cleaner is brilliant.

If you need to clean the carpets use the interiour shampoo and follow the instructions.

What seats do you have? They do a great range of seat cleaning products too.

This may cost a few quid but to add value to the car, it is well worth the effort. Good luck

I have got the Tan Leather interior, so need to look into getting getting something for that.

The only problem is that I have also got the tan interior, which is a pain to keep clean. Have just spoke to the SWMBO and she has told me I can buy the stuff, as long as it comes out of my bank account, and not the joint account, but she wont miss the money, I hope, so she can pay some towards, as she dirties the car as well.

Well my freind, they do a brilliant leather cleaner, get some!!!!!!. Then use some leather care cream to finish off. It will realy make the difference and give the car a lovlely leather smell.

Gliptone leather is the best cleaner and protector about IMO and knocks spots of the Megs stuff

The AG interior shampoo is very good too. Had beige cloth in my A6, and beige leather in the corrado. If you clean the leather, get a soft nail brush, if you have dark seams/crack marks apearing, and give it a gentle brush with AG leather cleaner. It will take a while (2 hours on my C's drivers seat) but it should come up clean. Then a little leather care cream. I'm told you should get the seat warm before you apply this, so either leave it in the sun, or more practically, get the car warm with a heater first.

You have a new L&K don't you? And the black alcantara seats? What have you been using on them? I presume the true leather I can use a normal cleaner but what about the alcantara(furry) bit?

I haven't got em dirty yet!

Was thinking AG interior shampoo, dry out, then attack with a soft/medium stiffness brush, to rejuvinate the fluff. As those bits are not leather, there is no need to condition them at all, although I'm sure there are special alacantra cleaners out there. Somone did suggest finding a protective spray/treatment, a scotchguard type thing, and avoiding stains to start with.

I use autoglymm and am happy with it. I wash with the AG shampoo once a week and use the aqua spray wax and once a month use the resin and gloss. Tyre cleaner stuff is good too along with the bug remover stuff even through it doesnt move tar like a cheaper bug remover spray does. Got a nice collette (think thats what its called) wax to use soon when the weather stays nice for more than five minutes :-)

agree with the aqua wax, good for when you feeling lazy, lasts about a month, and keeps the shine well.

Atm Halfrauds are doing a deal on car care products, iirc it's 3 for 2.
Worth a look if stocking up on stuff, as the bigger stores carry Autoglym and Megs' stuff, and the occasional 'premium' product.

Cheers. Same as you, my seats are clean at the mo. I suppose the alcantara inserts could be cleaned/protected with the appropriate shoe care product. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it!
