Beginner Questions

Hi guys,

Got my black magic furby vRS on tuesday. Not really up on all the right techniques and what's the best products to use. After some recommendation from a friend I've got Zymol auto wash for the shampoo, autoglym super resin polish and wonder wheels for the alloys.

Do I just rinse car, shampoo it, dry it off, apply polish and buff it up with a seperate cloth?

Thanks for your comments

Sorry that was cruel

OK, here's what I do. I have 2 differnt ways of doing the car, simple and complex.

Simple

Rinse the car with either a pressure washer or a hose to get the loose dirt and shïte of it

Clean the wheels, I do this first to avoid the cleaning stuff I use getting splattered on my nice clean paint work.

Wash the car with soapy (use whatever you want to make it bubbly eg the Zymol autowash)

DO NOT USE A SPONGE! It hold the dirt and gritty stuff realy well

Do the roof and rinse it, then do the bonnet and rinse, then do a side and rinse, then the other side and rinse and then do the rear and rinse. Then do you bumpers and wipe over your wheels.

Rinse it again.

If you have one of the aqua blade things, squeegy off as mucg water as possible.

Get a towel and finish drying it off

Apply your chosen wax or polish

Have a cuppa

Wipe the wax / polish off.

Takes about 90 minutes.

Complex

Before doing the above spray the car with MC2 or equivalent (from Jantastic).

Leave it 10 minutes and then wash off.

Do all of the above bar the waxing or polishing.

If you are going for a full blown clean, clay bar it.

Rinse it to get rid of the clay residue.

Apply tyre dressing

Now cleanse it.

Once you've done that, you can now do the polish / wax step.

While the wax is curing, wipe off the excess tyre dressing and do the black bits.

Clean under the bonnet and do the shut lines.

Take the wax off.

Now you can do inside the windows, hoover the interior and clean the interior plastics.

About 5 hours for this

I have a mitt. Goes straight in the washing machine when I'm done with it

Oh & I'm a 2-bucket man myself.

Thankyou for your replies.

I've heard that polishing a new car isn't a good idea, is this correct?

Also, what about a power wash for rinsing and cleaning the wheels? Will it be a bit too hard on the paint?

Power washing should be fine, just be careful of what nozzle its used with and dont blast the tyres.

Waxing a new car is fine....note I said waxing, polish/ing is abrasive and will leave swirl marks that will detract from the cars finish.

Well I've just bought some autoglym super resin polish, are you saying I shouldn't use it on a new car?

What I,m saying is any polish used on any car will recieve some swirl marks as polish is slightly abrasive.

Are tyres more sensitive to power washing than the paint work?

Only in that the wrong type of jet/nozzle on the end could do serious and permanent damage to the tyre wall.

Initial wipe is with an Aqua blade, then after that its a quality chamois.
