Black magic paint-The dark side

Johnny05 and I started cleaning our cars at around 8.30am Saturday morning,We'd arranged the date some weeks ago as Johnny needed to take the day off work, and had met up in between to have a chat about how much work each car would need.

We took some before shots, see later in post with the after shots and then got to work on the cars.
We started off by setting up the pop up gazebo etc

then straight into two bucket method washing and synchronised claying using Pinnacle Detailing Clay....

With both cars clayed, we then dried the vRS's using Meguiars Water magnets and moved one into the garage and the other under the gazebo.
John's car hadn't really seen any TLC for 12 months and after an inspection we set to using the PC's, a light cut 4 inch pad and Pinnacle Swirl Remover.We each started to make our way down the side panels.Once this was done we de-swirled the bonnet and roof.

Next up was a layer of Pinnacle Advanced Finishing Polishing, using the PC's and Polishing pads.

The flake started to come through after this:

With the polished applied we then applied a layer of Wolfgang Hi Gloss Sealant and left it to bond. While the sealant bonded on John's we moved outside to my vRS.

As my car has done a lot less miles and is younger the paintwork was not as swirled,so we used the fine cut pad and the Swirl Remover on some target areas before using Pinnacle Cleansing Lotion and polishing pads to clean up the whole car.
We followed this with the Pinnacle Advanced Finishing Polish, and a layer of Wolfgang Sealant.

With the sealant applied, we left it to bond and moved back to Johnny's car. Wiping off the sealant revealed some serious grins on our faces.

Next we topped the sealant with Pinnacle Souveran Wax. Applied by hand and removed panel by panel, to create:

Once the whole car had been done we returned outside and followed the same procedure on my vRS.

Tyres treated with Meg Hi Endurance Gloss, glass with AG Glass polish. Alloys and exhaust with Megs NXT Metal Polish Paste.

Thanks for the replies guys(oh that rhymes

)we aren't professionals or even close but we did has some expert help and advice with technique

and products so thanks again Iain.The biggest difference to our normal process was all the prep work before we even applied any wax or polish, such as claying and swirl remover and paint cleaner,both of the last 2 stages were applied with a random orbital polisher (porter cable 7274).

I had a brilliant day thanks a lot Iain , i learnt so much about detailing i thought i knew how to clean a car being an ex-car valeter eeeerr how wrong was i.
my car hadnt been waxed for about 12months and looked a complete different colour compared to pauls (more of a slate grey )
the pinnacle products we used were so easy to work with compared to some i have used in the past and my furby now looks so BLING

all the swirls have gone and boy do they show up on black magic paint
the paint is now so smooth and so deep the flake just pops in the sunlight (when it does come out) the car actually looks wet
So many thanks again to Iain for teaching me how to clay use the pc (porter cable not computer) and advice on products and correct use of them, and to paul for bringing a clean car and showing mine up

but not for long

it was a long day but it just flew by and the knowledge i learnt is priceless
so many people could learn so much from this kind of detail

i wish i had the knowledge, time and patience to do the same.
i live in a little cul-de-sac up a little mountain and the road where we all park outside our houses is all loose stones and dust so my car stays clean for a day then is just covered in dust and all other kinds of crap

would you recommend me going to my local car wash and getting a full valet done or is it a waste of money (only asking because johnny05 said he used to be an ex-car valeter and never saw anything like his results now)

NO! valeters will only clean your car not take care or time its money per car so the more they do the more they make, detailing is so much more have a look on detialingworld.com it becomes a hoby neigh obsesion post on there see if you can find a detailer near you, you will learn so much trust me, you can even make the flake pop on a silver car once detailed

I recently did two demos, one for a valeting company, and another for a car club local meet. Both groups were gob smacked at the lengths taken to prep the paintwork prior to applying polish, selant and then finally wax.

Can only only advise people to try to get a demo of a car polished by hand with a standard 'brew' like AG SRP, and compare with a detailers finish: clay. machine cleanse/de-swirl, machine polish, sealant and wax

belive it or not you dont notice how hard work it is because your so busy all the time and also learning a complete different way to clean your car the time just flies by................but you will feel it the day after

the results speak for them selves

the one in the pics is from Aldi, it is a pop up one, 3m by 3m and cost 35 notes.

I've just bought three sides for it, so its more like a mobile garage now lol

good work mate. makes you feel really proud when you see the finished article. mine will be getting a good cleaning if it ever stops raining up here in the NE. here is an earlier effort 2days after purchase
