Boost Gage install

hey all just finished playing and tweaking my boost gage install and i think its looking pretty sweet.

have a look and let me know what you think. i have also included a step by step guide on how i did it as well. ( sorry if this has been done before )

sorry i have no pic of the original dash but i think we all know what an Octavia Vrs dash looks like

so first off i removed the cubby hole and head unit to see what was there.

then i made a mock of how i would like my gage to be laid out in the car on a piece of card board. ( as you can see i did it in work thats why is so basic......but still had time to add style with the logos )

i then tried the card layout in the dash to see what it would look like. ( didn't get very Far with this bit as i made the cardboard lay out to big )

so new cardboard layout later and a second hole for another gage added its in and looking how i think it should go.

after a few trips to the shop I'm set on making this happen...but not sure if i like the gage above the head unit.

so i then made the card template out of some perspex plastic i had laying around. its not to critical if the perspex is cut a Little under size as it will all be hidden later.

next was to remove the carbon look cover from the dash and to lay my perspex in and mask off all areas i didn't want bonded.

next was to add all the bonding gunk. this would hold the perspex in place.

now the perspex was bonded in place i could flip it over and sand out any gunk that had seeped through onto the front of the unit.

its taking shape now not much work left

i then had to fill all the gaps and even out the front

once the front had been filled and sanded flat the unit was ready for painting but as I'm not sure what I'm doing to my interior at the moment i decided to cover the hole install in a carbon look vinyl.

here is a few pics of the finished article

i looked into doing that as well before this install but it didn't really take my fancie...... its quite hard to do as well.......but i am thinking of putting my sat nav in the drivers side air vent. you will have to let me know how it goes for you installing the gage. i have seen a gage holder that goes in the vent of a Mk 4 golf i wonder if you could adapt that

Re: Boost Gage install

Well done mate that looks fooking spot-on , not sure if I have the time and motivation to this I would probably just buy a din size 2/3 guage pod and remove the cubby hole . But a sweet job all the same!!!!!

yep should be no problem all you will have to do is find your dump valve cut the pipe that is on the top of it and T piece the boost pipe from there. shouldn't be to difficult

Diesels don't have a dump valve and nowhere to fit in a T-piece. I'm just fitting a boost gauge atm. You have a choice - either you remove the intake manifold and drill/tap a fitting into it at that little flat area after the EGR valve, or you fit an Allards racepipe that replaces the EGR system (it has a nipple for a boost gauge fitted). Of course then you have to tolerate a constant CEL light if you fit the racepipe....

I'm removing the intake manifold over the next couple of days when I have the time....

Re: Boost Gage install

Very tidy. I might have been tempted to spray it black but that might have been a little plain I guess.

Is the standard layout radio on top cubby hole bellow (like mine) or with the radio bellow like yours? Or is it whatever they felt like doing that day on the production line?

i think the standard layout is radio on top and cubby hole bellow..........i did try it with the radio at the bottom but it looks to clustered near the other controls.
