Can I be trusted with a can of spray-paint?

Simple question...

I've been given a shocking quote for spray-painting a grille and possible boot spoiler ( £120+VAT )

So, was wondering as cans of diamond metallic silver is only 7.99 from buttco, could I have a crack? On the other hand I may just take the can, the 2 bits to a local body repair shop for them to do it!

I'll be fixing them to my car myself though...

£120+VAT isn't a bad price for it TBH.

Again, dealer might be cheaper than Buttco for spray paint, especially when delivery is taken into account. Oh, and get some primer too if the parts don't come primed.

And practice on something first...

ahem, no. But I couldn't help imagining Stimp's attempt at painting his central air vent silver....

Seriously though, its not much more work than spraying it (professionally), letting it dry, repeat until looks nice, and then maybe a coat of lacquer?

My mate did my Milotec grill for me - it had to be rubbed down, primer applied, followed by two large cans (about 7 coats) of Halfords mixed black magic, then laquer over the top.

Took quite a while but looks the wotsits now

Think how s***e it will look on something that's going to be attached to the outside of your car if you don't do it just right...

And remember: you don't use nails to attach it

Recommendation chaps - If you're going to spray it yourself wait until the weather is warmer or do it in a heated garage (with suitable gas mask!!!)
Degrease the grill to remove mould release compound and other gunge, lightly rub it down to provide a key, then as Kenny says use a plastic primer. Flat this down and apply lots of thin coats of paint allowing it to dry in between. Finally apply the lacquer top coats.
For the time and hassle factor, is probably best to bite the bullet and fork out the cash.

Go into Halfords and tell them you want some diamond metallic silver paint for a Skoda in a form which is suitable for use with a compressor. They should be able to sort you out, and if they can't then they're a bunch of chimps...

halfords? really? I could try and pop down to the new superstore in Exeter at lunchtime but I've been there before once, and not seen that they're big on selling paint in non-spraycan form... hmmm. A wee drive is on the cards.

I think £120 sounds ok - its only the price of a tyre!!!

When painting plastic you need to first give it a coat of a special clear "sticky" primer (you need to get this from a special paint supplier) , then the primer , topcoat , laquer.

The paint needs to be mixed with an addative to make to flexiable - so that it won't crack.

On a DIY job I've never seen or be able to create the deep shine you get when using 2 pack laquer.

I wouldn't do this job with aerosols.

IIRC they don't stock diamond silver is a spraycan, it's something which gets mixed up on request. If that fails, try contacting a bodyshop, see if they can sort you out with some - though they might be reluctant...

Most modern cars are painted with 2 pack paint (also some with a water based paint).

My undertstanding it it is illegal to sell 2K paint over the counter to the "man on the street". (environmental issues etc)

The paint Halfords would sell would not be 2K as you don't need to add any activator to make it go hard.

The way it's going I think the material & labour cost of getting a grille and boot spoiler is going a bit O.T.T.. so, I think I'm gonna have to make a "one or the other" choice. soooo, I think I'm going to leave the grille as is - It looks OK and it has the Skoda badge to annoy people.

If I get the boot spoiler alone (which is about £160) - I reckon I'll just take it to my dealer approved bodyshop and pay the £60+VAT - (They quoted me £120+vat for spoiler AND grille.)

Besides, looking at them, I'm not sure the grilles are really that necessary for car styling and I'd rather shove my money in the direction of 17s and Konis.

But don't be totally surprised if for some reason it doesn't work out at half the price...

Actually, as I hit the "post" button I was thinking about the square inches of plastic on the boot spoiler, compared to the grille... Wonder which has more?

edit: should be less labour on the spoiler as it's not as fiddly as the grille, I think.

Jason MOVE !!

I live in Hampshire which is meant to be expensive

On the Scoob I had both bumpers, bonnet, 2 Front Wings & Wheels sprayed (Wheels had tyres off) for 400 cash. Later when some French Barsteward keyed 2 doors & a wing it was 200 cash

Just go round your local bodyshops/dealers & mention cash, I would recon about 50 when they are spraying another Silver car should do it

I'm visiting a local bodyshop, close to my office at lunchtime. I'll see what happens.
