Car wash

How often do you wash your motor? Once, Twice, Three times a month, or every week.

I have just had an operation on my ankle so I can't fanny around with it at weekends.
It is now filthy, Minging and really bugging me and I will have to take it to the local hand car wash and let fifty million Poles swarm all over it for seven quid.

I have taken it through before and noticed a couple of scratches from those sqeegee things they use to get rid of the water before leathering. Mines the Race blue species.
Is Metallic T cut the best thing to get rid?

Re: Car wash

I steer clear of automatic washes mate, especially the whirling pool of death things.

I wash mine at least once a month. Mine is blue too, so I'd be interested in recommendations for the daily commute chips and scuffs.

If I'm feeling lazy (or just out of it after work) I take mine to a decent hand wash. There's one in Torquay I know well now that has a coffee shop and a forecourt where they wash them for you in full view. Check local yellow pages for a "detailing" place if you don't want the cheap ones.

RE carwash
Im onto my second black octy vrs and wash it at least twice a week .
I also applied supagard much to the amusement of my new neighbours as i was at it for about 5 hrs doing prep including putting masking tape on all the window rubbers.
I do enjoy washing it and it would drive me spare if i couldnt get it done.
Regards Whoosh

Bloody hell! I feel like a right anal so an so when my neighbours see me washing mine 2- 3 times a month. I too get a great sense of satisfaction through cleaning the car. It may be uncool in the eyes of Jeremy Clarkson, money don't come that easy for me though.

A bloke who lives down the street from me always takes the **** out of me. " let it go " he keeps saying. I feel like giving him a right cross.

Re: Car wash

pressure wash it off for the moment and if you can snow foam it but i wouldnt take it to the poles or auto car wash it as both will destroy your car imo.

With regards to the wash process, the recent detail I did on Tom's is great evidence of Auto Car Washing / poor hand washing:

http://briskoda.net/forums/styling-c...ia-mk2/107197/

I wash mine at least once a week if not more but then I am a little OTT, I would suggest investing in some good equipment for a '2 Bucket Method' and you will be sorted............

Re: Car wash

Stunning ! I honestly never thought it would make THAT much difference.
I am going to have a go on mine. How long did it take though? How much would all the polishes etc cost all in?

Re: Car wash

Avoid sponges, leather chamois's and rubber squeegess

You want a nice lambs wool wash mitt for washing, microfibre cloths for drying, and some clean polishing cloths for polishing/waxing. Foam applicator pads work well for applying polish and wax.

A pressure washer takes the hard work out of rinsing as well.

If you drop a cloth, DO NOT use it as it will rub grit into the paint.

If you are after an easy and cheap way into car detailing/ polishing, TurtleWax and Autoglym are the way to go.

All availiable at your local Halfords Wait for a 3for2 or BOGOF

Personally for me if I was buying my first washing/ valeting kit as a beginner I would go for:

- Autoglym Super Resin Polish
- Autoglym Fast Glass + Glass Polish
- Meguirs Paint Cleaner
- Turtlewax Platinum Wax with Caranuba
- Turtlewax Gloss Guard Sealant
- Meguirs ScratchX for those annoying marks and scratches.
- Meguirs Tyre Gel
- Autoglym Alloy Wheel cleaner.
- Autoglym vinyl and rubber care
I hope that helps.

After washing, use the paint cleaner to remove stubborn marks and bits, then a coat of AG Polish, followed an hour later by TurtleWax Gloss Guard, then topped off with 2 coats of Wax, left 15 mintues each to "haze".

I hope that helps you.

Thanks for that.......Tom and I began at 10AM and finished at 6PM roughly..........I have a lot of kit now that I have built up over a period of time mate but if you have a machine then you are half way there otherwise you will find it hard going by hand............

Re: Car wash

You can wax it as often as you like, as all a wax does is add another layer on top of the laquer

Polishing however should only be done every couple of months

Re: Car wash

I'm learning lol.

Much to the annoyance of some of my Uni mates, who think I'm taking things "over the top".

"Dont use a sponge, you'll get grit on the paintwork"

"Dont use a squeege, youll rub grit into the paint"

"Don't use T-Cut, its not good for the paint"

"Use the 2-bucket method"

They laughed when I pulled out my wash mitt.

Re: Car wash

I always wash mine once a week, sometimes it's twice, although the midweek wash is usually just a snowfoam and pressure wash off to keep the dirt minimal, then a "proper" wash at the weekend.

Re: Car wash

I live in a culdysac and about 90% of people down there are all retired and the blokes are always out washing and vaccing their cars out. They all laugh at me at the moment for spending about 20mins to wash and dry the car and that's it, but they can't work out why mine still looks cleaner and has more little blobs on it when it rains than theirs..

You've gotta love Autoglym.

I tend to try and was the car once a fortnight
