| Hi, I have seen a kit where you replace the H4s bulbs with the xenons and mount some ballast modules close by. I'll see if I can find the link again. /Gav

| It is possible to retro fit xenons, however there is a load more to it than just whacking in the units ('cos that wouldn't be legal), such as automatic levelling and headlamp wash. Much better just to buy some 130/100 bulbs ![]() |

| If looking at new, they are an option now. Might not be in the brochure, but ask a dealer, if they deny it I'll give you a phone number of a more switched on dealer.

| The £9.99 Xenon bulbs I have just looked at on eBay are actually halogen bulbs. The xenons fitted to Skodas are high intensity discharge bulbs and, IIRC, need a tadge more than 12V to power them. Just found the info. Xenons need 25,000V to ignite them!

So are they any good for a 'step up' from normal bulbs? Can't afford the £300 odd for proper xenons (the money would be better off going towards a jabbaring!)

| powerbulbs are top notch, and the visionplus bulbs used to come with free blue sidelight bulbs too. And, as a dipped beam bulb, they're damn good! I'm not sure how they work though as they're still 55w bulbs... They just seem to emit a whiter light than regular ones.

| Standard on the WRC edition, not on the boggo standard RS. Yep H4 is right for the RS Octavia.

| What about the main beam if you fitted a Xenon kit in place of the H4 Halogens??? The Xenon lights on the L&K, WRC edt and now the vRS have a seperate main beam halogen bulb and reflector.... Ta Dazz ![]()

| The thing about discharge lights is that you need the proper Skoda headlight unit for it. The light source is tiny unlike in a halogen bulb where its quite a big filament glowing. Hence the reflector pattern will be all wrong which is why its not legal and in any case you also need the self levelling stuff. Also they have to be wired up to the airbags as the control unit shuts down permanently if the airbags are deployed to reduce risk of fire/electricution in an accident. Also all halogen bulbs have to approved (E marked) which means none are brighter than any other (except cheapy jobs might be dimmer) as there are strick max output provisions. Any tinted bulb (sold as super white/xenon/plasma blue or whatever) will have less output than a clear bulb, its simple physics. The blue coating to make them look whiter/bluer filters (ie removes) yellow from the bulbs output, which is what all halogen bulbs produce most of. They might appear brighter as the manufacturers can alter the beam produced slightly by changing the size of the filament - eg winding the coil less tightly. Cheers |
